The Dwarf is a valley resident who lives in The Mines. Initially the way is blocked off by an unbreakable rock, just inside the entrance. After upgrading to a steel pickaxe the stone can be broken. A cherry bomb also works.
The Dwarf will start out speaking Dwarvish, which is unreadable by the player. In order to understand Dwarf you must acquire the 4 Dwarvish scrolls from within the mines. After donating them to the museum, Gunther will give you a Dwarvish Translation Guide to use which allows you to understand the Dwarf's speech. You cannot make purchases from the Dwarf's shop or affect friendship with the Dwarf until you understand Dwarvish.

The Dwarf is apparently one of a race of Dwarves. They were once powerful and advanced but now only relics remain as artifacts. Krobus describes a 1000-year war between the dwarves and the shadow people, as such Dwarf is sometimes suspicious of the player of being a spy sent by the shadow people.

Alex loves sports and hanging out at the beach. He is quite arrogant and brags to everyone that he is going to be a professional athlete. Is his cockiness just a facade to mask his crushing self-doubt? Is he using his sports dream to fill the void left by the disappearance of his parents? Or is he just a brazen youth trying to 'look cool?'

Alex lives with his grandparents, George and Evelyn. He is friends with Haley. He also has a dog Dusty. You can find Dusty's name from Pam or from Alex in a cut scene. He previously lived with his mother Clara, that he had a very close relationship with. He expresses a deep hatred for his father, who was an alcoholic and verbally abusive to him. Twelve years prior to The Player arriving in Pelican Town, Alex moved in with George and Evelyn, after his mother passed away.

Vincent is a villager who lives in the southern part of Pelican Town. He's a young boy, and can often be found with his best friend Jas. He looks up to his brother and wants to be just like him when he grows up.

Vincent lives with his mother Jodi and his brother Sam. His father Kent is away at war in Year 1, but returns and lives with the family when he returns in Year 2. He's often seen alongside his friend Jas, who is the only resident of town close to his age. Penny takes time to teach both Vincent and Jas at the museum since there's no school nearby.

Vincent is a young child, so both females and males are encouraged to try out for him! His voice should show his innocence and possibly have a slight lisp (not required).

Caroline is the mother of Abigail and the husband of Pierre. She doesn't have the biggest role in the game, but she is fairly kind to the player and everyone else. However she seems to worry a lot about her daughter Abigail.

Apologies about there only being one audition line for this character - she doesn't have too many lines in-game.

Sam is an outgoing, friendly guy who is brimming with youthful energy. He plays guitar and drums, and wants to start a band with Sebastian as soon as he has enough songs together. However, he does have a habit of starting ambitious projects and not finishing them. Sam is a little stressed about the impending return of his father, who has been away for years due to his line of work.

Sam lives with his mother Jodi and younger brother Vincent. His mother spoils both of them, and claims that neither have ever had to do any chores. He is close to Vincent, and feels responsible for him in his dad's absence. In Spring, Year 2, Sam's father Kent returns and resides in the house with the rest of the family. After marriage, Sam will visit his family regularly to check up on them.
Sebastian and Abigail are his bandmates and close friends, and they often spend time together. When they are hanging out at The Stardrop Saloon, Sebastian is always seen beating Sam at pool, while Abigail watches from the couch. He is also friends with Penny, and will dance with her at the Flower Dance if neither is dancing with the player.

Demetrius is a villager who resides at 24 Mountain Road, on The Mountain, with his wife Robin, daughter Maru, and step-son Sebastian.
Demetrius is a scientist who studies the valley's local wildlife. He can often be found working in his laboratory or outdoors taking notes.

Demetrius is married to Robin and lives with his daughter Maru and step-son Sebastian. Maru is his daughter with Robin, and Sebastian is Robin's son from an earlier relationship. It is assumed that Demetrius is Robin's second husband, because there are 2 books in the bookcase of their room titled "Maximizing Your Second Marriage" and "Practical Tips For First-Time Step-Dads." Demetrius is very protective of Maru, as shown in her two heart event.

Sandy is a villager who lives in the Calico Desert where she runs the store, the Oasis. Players won't meet her until they've repaired the bus by completing the vault bundle or purchasing "Bus" for 40,000g through the Joja Community Development Form.

Sandy allows Mr. Qi to operate his casino behind her shop. It's clear they're not close, but she accepts his money and "looks the other way" with whatever he's doing back there. She also mentions she's friends with Emily, as during the first meeting she mentions that Emily wrote to her about them.
When the player completes all chat options, they will sometimes be given Milk. This is limited to once per day.

Abigail lives at the general store with her parents. She sometimes fights with her mom, who worries about Abigail’s “alternative lifestyle”. Her mom has the following to say: “I wish Abby would dress more appropriately and stop dyeing her hair blue. She has such a wonderful natural hair color, just like her grandmother did. Oh, and I wish she’d find some wholesome interests instead of this occult nonsense she’s into.” You might find Abigail alone in the graveyard, or maybe out in a rainstorm looking for frogs.

Emily is a villager who lives in Pelican Town. She is one of the twelve characters available to marry. Her home is south of the town square, right next to Jodi's, at the address 2 Willow Lane. She works most evenings at The Stardrop Saloon starting at about 4:00 PM. Emily loves to make her own clothing, but fabric can be difficult to come by in town. Among her favorite gifts are cloth and wool.

Emily lives with her sister Haley, and together they care for their parents' home, who have been travelling the world for the past two years. She works with Gus, who employs her part-time at the saloon. She is also friends with Sandy, whom they both mention. Sandy, at her first meeting with the player, claims to have been aware of the farmer's presence even before access to The Calico Desert was opened, saying that she had written to Emily about the newcomer.

Several dialogues and cutscenes reveal that Clint has romantic interest in Emily, though he is too shy to tell her.

He lives in a small apartment above the medical clinic, but spends most of his time working. You can sense a sadness about him, as if there’s something he’s not telling you…

Harvey is friends with Maru through working together at the clinic. He can be seen standing with Maru at the Luau, and his dialogue at that time suggests that he has a crush on her. (To be specific, he says "Good thing I brought my sunscreen," followed by, "I wonder if Maru could use some sunscreen on her shoulders?" This dialogue does not occur if he is married to the player.) Harvey will dance with Maru for the flower dance if not with the player.

Sebastian is a rebellious loner who lives in his parents’ basement. He is Maru’s older half-brother, and feels like his sister gets all the attention and adoration, while he is left to rot in the dark. He tends to get deeply absorbed in computer games, comic books, and sci-fi novels, and will sometimes spend great lengths of time pursuing these hobbies alone in his room. He can be a bit unfriendly to people he doesn’t know. Could a charming new farmer cultivate the wasteland of his heart? Who knows?

Sebastian lives with his mother, Robin, along with his step-dad Demetrius and half-sister Maru. Robin sometimes calls him Sebby. He feels that Maru is treated better than he is, and during Winter will talk about building a snow-goon that Demetrius demands he removes; he will then angrily question what his step-father's problem is.

Sebastian is good friends with Sam; the two can be found hanging out at Sam's house or at The Stardrop Saloon playing pool. They also stand together at festivals, along with Abigail. It is hinted he may have a crush on Abigail, after Sam tells the player Sebastian really wanted Abigail to be their drummer "for some reason". Furthermore, if married to Maru, she may sometimes say she "wishes her brother would just ask Abigail out".

During the Flower Dance, if not dancing with the player, Sebastian dances with Abigail.

Penny lives with her mom, Pam, in a little trailer by the river. While Pam is out carousing at the saloon, Penny quietly tends to her chores in the dim, stuffy room she is forced to call home. She is shy and modest, without any grand ambitions for life other than settling in and starting a family. She likes to cook (although her skills are questionable) and read books from the local library.

She also teaches the local children, Jas and Vincent, at the museum a few days a week and accompanies them to the playground sometimes.

During the eight-heart cutscene, Vincent remarks that he once saw Sam and Penny climbing trees, at which Penny becomes visibly startled and scolds Vincent for gossiping. Concerned has explained that he "wasn't trying to imply anything serious" with the scene regarding a continuation of Penny's interest in Sam. "[At 8 hearts,] she's not actually interested in Sam any more."

Shane is a villager in Pelican Town who is often rude and unhappy, and suffers from depression and alcohol dependence. However, his attitude starts to change towards any player who chooses to befriend him.

Shane lives at his aunt Marnie's ranch with his goddaughter Jas. He works at JojaMart (unless the Community Center is completed), and Morris is his manager there.

Clint is a villager who lives in Pelican Town. He owns and runs the local Blacksmith.

Clint often visits the saloon in order to socialize with Emily, who he has a crush on but is nervous to approach. A dialogue with Gus indicates that he suspects Clint's crush but has decided to not ask him about it. A note found in Clint's bedroom confirms his feelings.

Kent is a villager who lives in Pelican Town. He is away serving in the army throughout the first year and returns to live in the town during spring of year two. Year one references to him include the contents of the drawer in Jodi's bedroom and Vincent's words "Daddy comes home soon".

Kent is married to Jodi and together they have two sons, Sam and Vincent.

Kent most likely suffers from PTSD from being in the army. Many events and dialogue reference how he's anxious and wary in certain situations and places. He does sometime however blame others for doing everyday things that trigger his PTSD (such as Jodi making popcorn in his three-heart event).

Linus is a villager who lives in a small tent north of Pelican Town near The Mines.

Linus generally considers himself an outcast of the town. He does not trust people, and doesn't seem to consider anyone in town his friend (However, based on dialogue only available using exploits, Linus is friends with the Wizard. This dialogue is accessible if the player talks to the Wizard who is overlooking the maze during the Halloween event.), as to the fact that most people don't treat him well. During Festivals, he can usually be found alone and out of the way. At one point, Linus tells the player that his tent has been destroyed before. Robin mentions that she doesn't mind him living behind their house, as long as he doesn't bother them.

Marnie is a villager who lives at Marnie's Ranch in the northeast area of Cindersap Forest, near the southwest entrance to Pelican Town.

Marnie runs her own shop at Marnie's Ranch from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day, except Monday and Tuesday, although the building is still open on these days. She sells animals and animal supplies.

Marnie lives with her niece, Jas, and her nephew, Shane. When it is not raining, she exercises with Caroline, Jodi, Emily, and Robin on Tuesdays at Pierre's General Store.

Mayor Lewis and Marnie have a very close relationship. Although Marnie claims to be single during the Flower Dance, Lewis' 6-heart event confirms that they are dating. Lewis visits Marnie's Ranch to attend to her "business needs" on occasion, and the two can often be found drinking together at the Stardrop Saloon in the evening. In one of the story quests, Lewis asks you to find his lucky purple shorts, which can be found in Marnie's bedroom. You can also find a pair of brown suspenders in Marnie's bedroom dresser.

Lewis is the mayor of Pelican Town. Along with Robin, he greets you when you move to the Valley and explains a little bit about life on the farm. Lewis is known to have some sort of relations with Marnie, as the shorts he lost are found in her bedroom. As well as that, a note can be found in his bedroom in the lower left on a shelf under a coffee mug, believed to be from Marnie. The note is signed "-M"

When a festival takes place, you will receive a letter in your mail box from Lewis that tells you where and when it takes place, as well as any additional requirements.

As nobody has challenged Lewis for his title of mayor in the twenty years he has held the position, we can assume he has a good relationship with everyone living in Pelican Town. He was apparently good friends with the player's grandfather; if the player speaks to him while he is at The Stardrop Saloon, Lewis states that he will be having an extra drink in your grandfather's honor.

In parallel with his work as mayor, he is also involved in the Stardew Valley Agricultural Fund. He may send the player a letter that includes money from the fund, "to help you continue your good work," such as using it to buy seeds.

He has never been married and has no family; all he lives for is being mayor. He sometimes questions if it was worth it.

Lewis is particularly good friends with Marnie, as shown in the "Mayor's Shorts" story quest. He can also sometimes be found inside Marnie's Ranch saying, "I'm just here to make sure all of Marnie's business needs are met." Additionally, his 6-hearts event confirms that they're in a relationship, although he doesn't want the relationship to become public knowledge.

Pam is a villager who lives in the trailer just west of the river in Pelican Town. She was the driver of the Pelican Town bus before it broke down. Once the bus service has been restored, Pam will manage the bus stop just east of the farm on days where there is no rain.

Pam lives with her daughter Penny, who she doesn't have the best relationship with. She spends every evening socializing at The Stardrop Saloon.

Pierre is a villager who lives in Pelican Town. He owns and runs Pierre's General Store.

Pierre lives with his wife Caroline and their daughter Abigail behind his shop. On Friday evenings he socialises with other villagers at the saloon, but outside that he only interacts with others at his store.
He feels threatened by JojaMart and Morris's attempts to draw his customers away from the store, and worries that he won't be able to make as much money because of this.
He has a strained relationship with Abigail due to their different beliefs, as shown in a few cutscenes.

Willy is a villager who grew up travelling among the Fern Islands and now lives south of Pelican Town on The Beach. He sells bait and fishing supplies in his shop. His shop is open every day, but will be closed on Saturday if the weather is nice enough for him to go fishing.

Willy spends most of his time fishing just outside his shop when not operating the sale counters at his shop. He's often seen at the saloon in evenings, especially during the winter. He lives right next to Elliott, the two of them are the only residents of the beach.

Evelyn has lived in Pelican Town her entire life. Always hopeful and optimistic, "Granny" spends her days tending the town gardens, baking her signature cookies, and reminiscing about Stardew Valley's vibrant past.

Evelyn is a villager who lives in Pelican Town, and is in charge of the town's flowers. 

Evelyn is married to George, and lives with her grandson Alex. Alex's deceased mother Clara was Evelyn's daughter. This is possibly a note from Evelyn's daughter, Clara, who is the mother of Alex. Clara passed away and left Alex to live with Evelyn and George.
In the beginning of Stardew Valley, when meeting all the townspeople, Evelyn will give you permission to call her "Granny".

Grandpa is the first character players are introduced to. He writes a letter gifting the farmhouse, which prompts the player to move to Stardew Valley.

The player can find a note on Grandpa's Shrine, at the far Northwest corner of The Farm, which states that Grandpa will return at the start of the third year (1st of Spring, Year 3) to evaluate the player's success.

Grandpa's evaluation is directly related to the number of candles that light up around Grandpa's Shrine (there are 4 candles) at the beginning of year three. This is determined by a point system based on various milestones that were reached in the first two years. There are a total of 21 available points.
The player can be re-evaluated at any time by placing a Diamond into Grandpa's Shrine (Grandpa will show up on the following day, after a game load or the first day of the following season in some cases). This means that the opportunity to obtain all four candles is extended beyond the initial two year evaluation.

Gus is a villager who lives and works at The Stardrop Saloon in Pelican Town. He owns the establishment.

Gus employs Emily part-time to help at the saloon. Pam is also a frequent customer, and can often be seen chatting with Gus.

Jas is a villager who lives just outside Pelican Town. She's a young girl, and can often be found with her best friend Vincent.

Jas lives with her aunt Marnie and her godfather Shane on her ranch outside town. She's often seen alongside her friend Vincent, who is the only resident of town close to her age. Penny takes time to teach both Vincent and Jas at the museum since there's no school nearby. Jas' parents both died by unknown causes.

Jodi is a villager who lives in Pelican Town. She lives at 1 Willow Lane with her husband Kent (who is away serving in the military until the first of Spring Year 2) and two sons, Sam and Vincent.

Krobus is the only friendly monster players will encounter. He is a shadow brute who lives in the sewers. He sells a variety of rare goods.

Krobus is a shadow brute and, although he isn't hostile, still refers to other monsters as "his friends". He lives in the sewers and normally isn't seen outside interacting with other villagers. He dislikes dwarves, stating that a 1,000 year war between the dwarves and his people recently ended. He believes if the dwarves knew where he was, they'd send an assassin.
The Wizard is aware of his presence and intervenes to prevent conflicts.

Morris is a villager who works at JojaMart in Pelican Town. He's the manager and also acts as the customer service representative. He'll offer to sell the player a JojaMart membership for 5,000g. If the player chooses to purchase this membership a Joja Warehouse will replace the abandoned Community Center.
If the player completes the community center, the local JojaMart goes out of business and Morris leaves town.

The Pelican Town JojaMart is Morris' first store as manager. He truly believes that Joja Corporation will propel the Ferngill Republic toward a more prosperous future.
