About the project

A high schooler named Azusa Fukumi was recently accepted into Hope's Peak Academy due to her talent. When she got to the prestigious school however, she mysteriously fell unconscious, and was later found by 15 other students, who were also accepted into Hope's Peak. What will these 16 Ultimate students go through in this mysterious adventure filled with thrills, chills, and kills? Find out in DR: Despair Campus Course.

  • Kazz Sasaki

    KAZZ: I decided that 9 boys and 7 girls is a little uneven. So I changed Kazz from a boy to a girl! Have fun ladies! Also, I changed Kazz's first name to Jun, a unisex name, so I can make use out of Jun's pixel sprite. The new Jun Sasaki is going to be a reverse trap. I know that people think traps are evil, but apparently reverse traps are ok? I hope this doesn't cause a problem with the boys who wanted to audition for him. For those boys, I'm sorry, but it had to be done. Thank you for your time!

  • Ai's Talent

    Ai has been given a new talent name, but don't worry if you auditioned already. I didn't change Ai's lines because of that, and I'll explain why. So kind of has this Himiko complex about about her talent. Instead of calling herself the Ultimate Magician, Himiko occasionally called herself the Ultimate Mage, because she believed she was an actual mage. Ai's story was a little different then that. For a certain birthday party event, Ai was asked to dress as a clown for the kids, since the birthday kid wanted to see a clown for the first time. When Ai went up to the children as in a clown costume, the children were all so thrilled and overjoyed after seeing her. After the party was over, So still thought about the children's reaction to her clown costume, and thought to herself, 'If this costume can make one group of kids happy, then I'll just stick with this clown gig!' Ever since then, Ai dressed as a clown for children's not that parties, and when she was scouted, she began to call herself the Ultimate Clown, instead of Ultimate Party Entertainer, not because she believed she was an actual clown, but because she loved to perform as one. I hope that this explanation will help you understand why Ai's talent name changed but her speech lines did not. Thank you for your time!

  • Character designs, male character roles, character backstories, sprite artists, and programmers

    CHARACTER DESIGNS: I changed some of th edesigns of the character designs, again. I was recently told by a great sprite artist that I have to truly picture what the characters will look like based off of their talents, and imagine what they would be like, and to picture the characters as my own children. Thats what I plan to do for the pixel sprites, as for actual sprites, I will get to that later. MALE CHARACTER ROLES: If you haven't noticed, barely any of the male characters have any auditions for their voices. Mostly the females do, and that's fine but I still need some more boys to audition for some of the male Ultimates to make this project work. If you know any men on Casting Call looking for a new role to take part in, just send them down here, because they are desperately needed. CHARACTER BACKSTORIES: As I said before, I was told by an amazing sprite artist to envision what my characters will look like, but also what their actual characters to be like as well. So I was planning on adding more stuff, or changing the backstories of certain characters entirely, so consider the backstories of the characters right now beta. I'm sorry if this may be of inconvenience to you, but it has to be this way to make the project work. SPRITE ARTISTS: If you can't tell, the characters don't really have actual people sprites apart from pixel sprites. Well, I can draw on a digital canvas, but not perfectly. Why you ask? Because I don't have a proper computer. Also, I can only draw eyes on a digital canvas, and I have a lot of trouble with bodies, which is why I need a proper sprite artist to help me. If you know anyone who is an amazing artist, and they want to have their art skills expanded in any way, please send them to this Casting Call so I can see their artwork at first hand. PROGRAMMERS: I'm still a novice programmer, and without a proper computer, this project can't go anywhere. So if you know anyone who is a good programmer, please send them here, because programmers are desperately needed. I am very sorry that this update was very long, I just thought I should ler you guys know what is going on, and the struggles that this project currently faces.   • Typos and Jonai's Backstory/Personality

    I fixed a few typos that I had just noticed. I'm sorry if they probably confused you. JONAI: I added something to Jonai's personality that also connects with his backstory. Just go to Jonai's profile and see for yourself. If you dont want to, then I'll explain. Whenever Hisao and Jonai are in public, Jonai refers to his brother as 'Onii-chan' for seemingly no reason. When people confronted the boy about this, Jonai simply says its because he lost a bet to his brother. When people ask what the bet was about, Jonai quotes it as 'too personal', before walking away. Luckily whenever Hisao isn't around, Jonai just calls him Hisao when he's alone with others. That just about covers it! Thank you for your time!

  • Souji's name

    Another thing about Souji. His name is also kind of similar to Saori's, so I'm planning in changing it. This may be the last time you see the name 'Souji Sugiyama', because its going to be something else soon. Thank you for listening, and thank you for helping this project work.

Azusa Fukumi, Ultimate Cake Decorater

BACKSTORY: Azusa 's family owned a bakery that was rather stale. No one really went to Fukumi's Baked Goods that often,  since most of the items there didn't really have any pizzazz. It was only when a young Azusa saw her father decorating a cake for her mother's birthday,  that made something inside of her click.  When her father left to go to the restroom,  Azusa grabbed a frosting squeezer,  and made a ton of frosting roses on the rim of the cake.  When her father returned, he saw his daughter place the frosting roses on the cake, astonished on how she learned so fast. After that, Asuza's father made her an employee in his bakery, so she could decorate the sweets, but mostly the cakes. It was one day where she decorated the most beautiful cake in front of a Hope's Peak scouter, that she became an Ultimate. 

PERSONALITY: Asuza is a kind and cowardly girl. Shy since day one, Asuza didn't really know how to make friends, and spent more time on her studies for school and improving her cake decorating skills. The girl wasn't really bullied that much, thankfully, but believed that a life of loneliness is enough torture, and thinks she maybe lonely forever, due to her lack of social skills. But through all this, she is very intelligent and a grade A perfectionist. 

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Azusa is shy,  so I imagine her having a sort of quiet voice, like Fluttershy, but as she progresses and talks to people more, she opens up more and speaks a little louder than normal. She should have a high to medium pitched voice because of this. 


  • (Happily but shyly) "So I don't forget, my name is Azusa Fukumi, the Ultimate Cake Decorator. My family owns one of the most popular bakeries in town, so I would have assumed you knew me already. "

  • (Fearful) "W-We can't be stuck here forever! There's gotta be a way out of this place! "

  • (Analytical) "From the blood pattern,  the victim must have been attacked over there,  and then killed over here. NO, THAT'S WRONG! You're the only one! Okay, this is what happened! "

Reo Abe, Ultimate News Reporter

BACKSTORY: As a child, Reo' s parents weren't around that often. He spent most of his time with his aunt and uncle, who didn't really pay that much attention to him either. As he grew up, Reo became more and more desperate for attention, so he did some things that either made his caretakers laugh, or got him in trouble. At the time, the boy didn't care as long as he got a little attention from someone. It was one day that his aunt, who happens to be a news reporter, took him to her job for take your child to work day. A fellow colleague of his aunt, messed up his report on the weather for the next week. Reo, who knew the correct weather state, ran up to the weather caster, on air, to tell him that he made a mistake. His stunt got him in massive trouble, but the good thing is, he ended up being right. So at just 18, Reo became the lead news reporter in that studio. Reo loved this job, not only because he could tell people what was happening in the world, but he gained a lot of the needed attention he deserved. This became even better when he was scouted as an Ultimate for Hope's Peak.

PERSONALITY: Reo craves attention from other people, and loves drama. Ever since he was a child, he barely gained any attention from anyone, resulting in having no friends and no family to turn to. It was only after a stunt during a weather forecast that made him gain not only negative attention from his aunt and her colleagues, but also positive attention from everyone around the globe. People wanted to see him more and more on television, and he gained a massive amount of friends in school after that unexpected weather forecast. Reo loved all of the attention from his classmates, and wanted to become news reporter after that. So, Reo is confident and loves to follow his passions.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Reo is a confident, striving young man, so his voice should be loud and bold towards others, but shy and midtoned around Azusa. I imagine Reo having a medium pitched voice.

  • (Friendly) "Greetings, fellow classmate. I'm Reo Abe. You may know me from the news as the Ultimate News Reporter. Nice to meet you."

  • (Monotone and needy) "Yeah, uh can I go speak to my little cupcake now? I miss her already..."

  • (Shyly) "Hey my little cupcake. Do you want to go get some green tea in the cafeteria? You know, just us two?"

BACKSTORY: Ohta was surrounded by music as a child, since most of his family was in the music business at the time. He loved the sounds that they made, from the high pitched sounds of a piccolo, to the deep pitches a cello makes, but his favorite out of them all was the trumpet. When he was in middle school, he was the best trumpet player out of his class, even better than the teacher. He was so good in fact, that Ohta's parents signed him up to join a symphony filled with brass instruments. Ohta even had the honor of being the solo player in the symphony. As time went on, Ohta was signed up for 48 more symphonies, and later met a Hope's Peak scouter after a performance, and became an Ultimate.

PERSONALITY: Ohta is a very laid back person. Believing he is the greatest trumpeter out there, he can also be very boastful when people ask about his talent.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Ohta is the most chill guy out of his classmates, so I imagine him having a medium to low pitched voice.

  • (Chill) "Sup? The name's Ohta Maruyama. People in the music business know me as the Ultimate Trumpeter."

  • (Unsettled) "A killing game? You...You gotta be pullin' my leg here."

  • (Boastful) "I don't mean to toot my own horn here, but I have played at almost 50 symphonic concerts within a span of a year. What have you done during that time?"

Kayoko Taniguchi, Ultimate Florist

BACKSTORY: Kayoko loved flowers growing up, so when she became a first year in high school, she got a job as a florist. She was the best employee at that flower shop, taking care of the flowers they had in stock like they were her own children. One time, when she noticed that a certain pot filled with her favorite flowers were dying, Kayoko went through great lengths to keep the flowers alive. Like, giving them daily doses of plant food, and keeping them outside to gain more sunlight. Don't worry, she never forgot about the water. After a whole week of her extensive plant saving efforts, the flowers slowly began to live again. Her manager told one of his friends about the story, and this friend turned out to be a Hope's Peak scouter, who later dubbed Kayoko an Ultimate.

PERSONALITY: Kayoko is a gentle soul, she wouldn't even hurt a fly. Not to mention, she is a beautiful young woman, meaning she has plenty of male admirers at her disposal. She is a full on pacifist, so imagining her in a killing game doesn't seem likely at all.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: I imagine Kayoko having a high pitched voice, because of her sweet demeanor and pacifist behavior.

  • (Sweetly) "I am Kayoko Taniguchi. I was scouted to Hope's Peak as the Ultimate Florist. It's very nice to meet you."

  • (Excited) "So you're Azusa Fukumi? Its an honor to finally meet you! I've always love the floral designs you granted cakes with! They are so divine!"

  • (Crying) "But...but I don't wanna kill anyone! Everyone here seems so nice! Why....why are you making us do this?!"

BACKSTORY: Not really much is known about Saori. All people know about her is the fact that her graphic design talent has no end. She was asked by many companies to help with their commercial campain by making signs about the companies. She was scouted as an Ultimate when a scouter saw her work at first hand.

PERSONALITY: Saori doesn't like social interaction. She believes that having friends will only ruin her lifestyle instead of making it better, so she never bothered making friends. Also, Saori loves watching forensic shows, because she finds them interesting.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Saori should have a medium to low pitched voice since she has no interest in making friends whatsoever, and her voice should reflect her monotone behavior.

  • (Uninterested) "Its Saori Arai......my name....."

  • (Standoffish) "Hey, uh, c-could you go away p-please? I d-don't really wanna talk.....anymore...."

  • (Analytical) "Multiple stab wounds huh? That means that this wasn't some random killing. Whoever did this had a personal issue with our victim."

BACKSTORY: Hisao grew up in a big family with his little brother, Jonai. Through one of their older siblings, Hisao became super interested in biology. For most of his life, he studied animals, plant life, and humans to learn more about them. He was scouted as the Ultimate Biologist when he discovered a cell in the human body no one knew about.

PERSONALITY: Unlike his brother, Hisao is the trouble maker of the two, always full of energy. He always got yelled at by his parents for misbehaving, but Hisao didn't really care. When he learned about biology, all of Hisao's energy went into that. Even with biology taking over his life, Hisao is still very childish.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Hisao is loud, and I mean a really loud guy. He isn't the buff guy of the group, but he has the energy of Nekomaru. I imagine his voice to have a high to medium pitch.

  • (Hyped) "HEYA! I am the great Ultimate Biologist, Hisao Takeuchi! To whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?"

  • (In denial) "Haha, nice scare, kitty cat! You don't really think that we'll all kill each other, do you?"

  • (Sad) "Such a shame. This person had so much to live for. What kind of monster would do something like this?"

BACKSTORY: Unlike his brother, who spent most of his time with something scientific, Jonai joined the disciplinary committee of his middle school. Being the most mature and serious of the committee, it wasn't long before teachers began to treat him with more respect. Jonai was quickly recognised as the most behaved and intelligent student once he got into high school. He was later scouted as an Ultimate along with his brother for Hope's Peak.

PERSONALITY: Jonai is a lot more well behaved than his brother, making people mistake him as the older one. Unlike his brother, who is fearless, and sometimes careless, Jonai is more careful and more fearful. Jonai usually scolds his brother for his unrequited and childlike behavior, and apologizes to people about it if they seem to witness Hisao's behavior. Even though it seems like he doesn't, Jonai loves his older brother unconditionally, even if he does get on his nerves sometimes. Also, Jonai refers his older brother as 'Onii-chan' whenever Hisao and himself were in a group of people. Others asked why Jonai does this, and he simply says that he "lost a bet" to his brother. He never disclosed what the bet was about, but people know that Jonai was the loser.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Jonai should have a medium to low pitched voice, since he is much more mature than his older brother, so his voice should reflect that.

  • (Firmly) "Hello. My name is Jonai Takeuchi. I have been deemed the name of Ultimate Disciplinary Committee President by Hope's Peak. A pleasure to make you're acquaintance."

  • (Embarrassed) "The boy over there is my older brother, Hisao. Forgive me for his behavior, he has been like this since we were children."

  • (Sarcastically, then angrily) "Sure onii-chan, lets all just forget that two of our friends have passed, and move on with our lives in this prison, dancing like pixie horses and vomiting rainbows~! NO ONE IS IN THE MOOD RIGHT NOW!"

Ai Okamoto, Ultimate Party Entertainer (Clown)

BACKSTORY: Ai loved to entertain people, especially during children's birthday parties. During these events, Ai would usually dress in a costume that fits the theme of said event. One event, Ai dressed as a clown for a birthday party, where the children really wanted a clown as the entertainer. The reactions of the children when they saw Ai was something to be remembered. Everyone loved Ai the Clown, so much, that after the party, Ai always dressed as a clown for birthday party events. She was later scouted to Hope's Peak as the Ultimate Party Entertainer after she left her last birthday party event, but started calling herself the Ultimate Clown since she loved her clown costume so much.

PERSONALITY: Ai is basically the Luan Loud of the group. Instead of telling corny jokes when she gets the chance, Ai asks her friends if they want to hear jokes, or be entertained in any form at the moment. Ai is an optimistic, energetic young woman, who loves a good laugh once in a while.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Ai is funny entertainer, so I imagine her to have a high to medium pitched voice.

  • (Happily) "Hiya! The children know me as 'Giggles' but you can call me Ai Okamoto, the Ultimate Clown!"

  • (Whining) "But I don't wanna hurt anyone! I wanna go home! Let me go home!"

  • (Jokingly) "Hey, you wanna here a joke? Okay, what did the egg say to the clown? You crack me up! Hahahaha!

Erika Morita, Ultimate Gym Teacher

BACKSTORY: Erika loved to teach people new things, and athletics is one thing she loved to teach. There were times in middle school where her gym teacher was sick, and the substitute, by the original teachers orders, let Erika teach the class. As she grew older, the other gym teachers weren't that good at their jobs, so the school gave Erika a full-time job of teaching gym to her fellow classmates. When a Hope's Peak scouter came to her old high school for students, the faculty lead the scouter straight to Erika.

PERSONALITY: Erika is the buff person of the group, meaning she has a kind and warm soul under her tough, tanned exterior. She's not super buff like Sakura, but has the body of Akane. Her teaching skills were beyond compare to regular teachers, making her the best teacher that any student has ever had.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: I imagine Erika having a voice similar to Sakura's voice, so a very low pitch, making her have the lowest voice out of all the girls.

  • (Firm but Friendly) "Greeting. I am the Ultimate Gym Teacher, Erika Morita. I hope we can get along."

  • (Strictly) "Will you please be on your best behavior while at breakfast? If you keep this up, I'll make you drop and give me 70!"

  • (Softly) "If this is really our fate, then I hope that the ones I tought are doing well. I will miss them all greatly, but I will stay strong.....for them."

BACKSTORY: Jun suffered amnesia when she was scouted for Hope's Peak, so she doesn't really remember much of herself, but she somehow remembers a small bit of her childhood. Her parents wanted a boy, so they made their only daughter dress as a boy. That's all that Jun can remember after her memory was erased.

PERSONALITY: Jun is like a mother figure to her classmates. Polite and determined, Jun is the one symbol of hope that the Ultimate students have.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Jun should have a medium to low pitched voice, to make her sound more like a young mother, but to also make her sound a bit like a boy as well.

  • (Calmly) "My name is Jun Sasaki. I can't recall my talent, but I know that I'm an Ultimate."

  • (Confused) "Uh, you don't mean actual bloody murder when you say killing game, do you?"

  • (Parent-like) "Hey now, dry those tears. I believe that we will get out of here, and I have a feeling that people are looking for us right now. So we don't need to worry and cry, we will get out of here. Don't lose hope guys!"

BACKSTORY: Danuja is obsessed with fantasy. So much so, that he believed that a high official named Hansuke was a king among the people, so he offered to be his knight. Most people ridiculed him as much as Hansuke did, only using Danuja for things he wanted. The poor knight couldn't see Hansuke's deception though, only seeing Hansuke as a king and himself as his knight. When Hansuke finally had enough of Danuja's knight and king crap, he called a scouter for Hope's Peak to scout him as the Ultimate Jokester, but Danuja retailiated with the name, and changed it to Ultimate Knight.

PERSONALITY: Growing up, Danuja was very gullible. He believed in the smallest of rumors and believed anyone he cared about was always telling the truth. This lead people to use him for things he knew was wrong, but still did anyway. Danuja is basically the cinnamon bun of the group.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Danuja should have a medium to low pitched voice, to simulate that he is serious about the knight business.

  • (Proudly) "Who you see before you is the protector of King Hansuke. The righteous, the honorable, the Ultimate Knight, Danuja Watanabe!"

  • (Upset) "Knights are supposed to be kind hearted, loyal, and honor chivalry! There is no chivalry in killing innocent people for no reason! Its.....its.....unholy!"

  • (Intrigued) "By the name of His Highness himself! Your cakes look absolutely marvelous, dear friend! I must ask His Highness if you can cook for the Royal family! Trust me, it is an honor!"

Yaeko Ota, Ultimate Business Heir

BACKSTORY: Since birth, Yaeko was spoiled silly by her parents. Her family own one of the biggest furniture businesses in Japan, so her family is super rich. And because Yaeko was an only child, ahe was given training to prepare herself to become the next CEO of the Ota furniture company. Hope's Peak scouted her, but she refused at first, thinking that she was too good for Hope's Peak. It took a lot of talking, but Yaeko finally agreed to be scouted as an Ultimate for Hope's Peak.

PERSONALITY: The Byakuya of the group. Standoffish, unfriendly, excessively rude, and a full on terrible person in general.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Yaeko should have a medium to low pitched voice.

  • (Unfriendly) "Let's make this quick. I'm Yaeko Ota, the Ultimate Business Heir. Now leave."

  • (Annoyed) "Will you please stop with that racket?! Ugh, what were you, raised in a barn?!"

  • (Uncaring) "The killer deserved the fate that they got. Why, you ask? Because their tiny, peanut sized brains got them killed. What a tragedy....boo hoo....no one cares anymore."

Ryuu Shibata, Ultimate Tai Kwon Do Master

BACKSTORY: Ryuu's family owned a dojo, so his entire life was centered around the art of Tai Kwon Do. Ryuu became a master within 6 years. He defeated his father, the owner of the dojo, when he was 12, and became the new master on that day. People believe that Ryuu's father was going easy on him and let his son win, but that's not what Ryuu believes. After Ryuu was scouted, his father took over the dojo as master in Ryuu's place.

PERSONALITY: Ryuu is a very confident optimist. Maybe too confident, but he still managed to easily attract people to him, except for girls, leading him to have trouble speaking to them. 

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Ryuu should have a high to medium toned voice, to simulate that he is confident at doing everything he does.

BACKSTORY: Tsukiya was a born salesman. Whenever his sister had to sell cookies for girl scouts, she would always ask her brother to help her sell the cookies. One day, Tsukiya was asked by a fellow entrepreneur to help him sell an item that helps with back pain. The boy agreed, helping the grown man sell about 100,000 of the pain killers. A buyer, who happened to be a Hope's Peak scouter, scouted Tsukiya for his talent in selling things.

PERSONALITY: Tsukiya is actually a shy boy, but whenever he's selling things, he becomes a completely different person. Loud, confident, and nice, Tsukiya is a great guy to be friends with. The only thing strange about him is his strange obsession with Azusa when they first meet.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Tsukiya's voice should be about medium pitched.

  • (Blunt) "I'm Tsukiya Ueho, the Ultimate Entrepreneur! So great to meet you!"

  • (Shyly) "I wanted t-to ask, um, you wanna go out for dinner sometime, when we get outta here? I-uh-I know that seems pretty forward, but I've never been on a date before, and uh, your really nice, and pretty and....."

BACKSTORY: Yo doesn't like talking about himself, but he loves talking about animation. So much that he took college level animation classes so he could learn to animate himself. He actually managed to animate a movie called 'The Great Healing Mountain'. Yo was later scouted as an Ultimate for Hope's Peak shortly after his movie released.

PERSONALITY: Yo is a strange individual. He is known by his peers to wear an eyepatch at almost every hour of every day. There were even times where he said incredibly incriminating and scary things out of the blue, and acts like he never said them in the first place. There were rumors that Yo's parents abused him, so badly to the point where Yo had enough and killed them both, and buried them under their house. The rumors were never confirmed.

VOICE DESCRIPTION: Medium pitched, but he speaks kind of slow.

  • (Uninterested) "Yo Sugiyama.....the animation prodigy.......

  • (Creepily) "You want to know why I wear an eyepatch? Its a secret, Miss Cupcake.......one you don't want to pry into......

  • (Apathetically, then creepily) "Hey, w-what's the ma-.............oh. So someone died, huh? Well, I'm not super surprised. They deserved a slow, and painful passing~ Pehehehehe~.
