Cirque DUB Freak: Casting for Harkat Mulds and (Older) Darren Shan

Project Overview

Cirque du Freak follows the story of Darren Shan, a young boy turned into a half-vampire. He joins Cirque du Freak with his guardian, Larten Crepsley, who had turned him into a half-vampire. They share an uneasy relationship, often becoming confused about each others feelings and concerns, and Darren disliking Crepsley for taking away his human life. Steve Leonard, Darren's best friend while he was human, feels betrayed by Darren becoming a half-vampire and decides to become a vampire hunter in order to kill him.

This project will focus on providing voiceover for the manga version of Saga of Darren Shan/Cirque du Freak. As of right now, we have plans to cover all of Volume 1. There is a total of 12 volumes in this series. Each video will cover at least one chapter and will be uploaded to YouTube, Twitter, TikTok and various other social media sites.


UPDATE: I've decided to cover Cirque DUB Freak SCENE by SCENE instead of EPISODE by EPISODE, as mixing/mastering is a lot more time consuming than I originally thought it would be. 😅 However, I will most likely be combining all of the Cirque DUB Freak clips/scenes into a single "episode" once all Volume 1 - Chapter 1 scenes have been completed.

Harkat Mulds (ハーキャット・マルズ Hakkyatto Marusu) is a little person and an ally of Darren Shan. Somehow he's different from the rest of the little people, as he can speak and show emotions. He's very protective of Darren, as Desmond Tiny promised him that he would regain his memories if he did so.


APPEARANCE 

Harkat looks like the other little people. He's very short, not much bigger than a child. He has no nose or ears and his face is grey, stitched with shriveled skin and thick arms and muscles. He wears the standard outfit for little people, a blue robe with a hood over his head.


PERSONALITY 

Unlike the other little people, Harkat has emotions and is friendly and smart. He's completely devoted to protect Darren, as Mr. Tiny promised him he'll tell him about who he used to be when he was alive if he helped Darren in his adventures. However, he's quick to call out Darren if he does something that's not morally correct.


VOICE

Little people don't usually talk. Somehow, Harkat Mulds is an exception. His voice is very scratchy, coarse, and he has a broken speech pattern. He also speaks rather slowly, as if he is thinking about each word. When you see "..." in his dialogue, that is an example of his broken speech pattern.

Darren Shan (ダレン・シャン Daren Shan) is the protagonist in The Saga of Darren Shan. He's a boy with an interest and love for spiders. Darren was drawn to the Cirque du Freak show because of the spider tamer, and was deeply amazed by the performance; enough so that he stole the spider Madam Octa.


He decides to become a half-vampire and join Larten Crepsley to save the life of his best friend Steve Leonard, as he felt it was his responsibility. Even after Steve vows to kill him one day after becoming a strong vampire hunter, Darren does not tell Crepsley about the threat in order to keep Steve safe, believing that he is still his best friend.


APPEARANCE 

Darren is a petite boy with black hair and green eyes. In the manga he wears his standard school uniform, consisting of a white shirt, red necktie and green pants rolled up to his knees. After becoming a vampire, he wears his funeral outfit, consisting of a black suit with black shorts.


After aging up to a young man, he wears a white shirt and black pants.


PERSONALITY 

Initially, Darren is a kind-hearted boy who tries to stay out of trouble. He is loyal to his friends and puts them before himself, willing to sacrifice himself for his loved ones. He is also stubborn as he chooses to stay with whatever decision he has made and will go through it stoically. Darren is also witty and tends to snark a lot in his internal monologues.


After becoming a vampire, he insists that he doesn't want to kill anybody, as he believes it's wrong. However, as the series progresses and he becomes more affected by the loss of his friends, he becomes filled with hate and resentment and it appears to start influencing his decisions, becoming more vindictive and pragmatic.


In the manga adaptation, Darren acts more like a typical hero compared to his novel counterpart. He's more naive and his insistence on fair play, honor and trying to help everyone will just get even more people killed and will lead him to being crushed by his ideals as the story progresses. He wants everyone to get along, and often is the one to interfere with and settle disputes between people. However, this changes as the series progresses and becomes more cynical. Unlike the novel, Darren never stops considering Steve as a friend and blames himself for his sanity slippage and their broken friendship.
