Bittersweet | Student Short Film

Bittersweet | Student Short Film

Project Overview

Synopsis:

After moving away from home, Isabella grapples with being apart from the people she cares about. In her sorrow, she discovers how joy can be found in simple pleasures, if you only stop to look for them.

Quick Information:

Title: "Bittersweet"

Project Type: Student Short Film

Length: 6-minutes

Roles Available: 1 supporting

Recording Location/Period: Remote, solo recording, 2-week solo recording deadline with an extra week extension (if needed)

Compensation: Through Paypal, flat rate

Audition Deadline: Feb 14th, 2023 - 9:00 PM PST

Read Before Auditioning:

- You must be able to contact either through email or Discord.

- If cast, your full name will be required for crediting. Usernames will not be accepted, but pseudonyms / stage-names are permitted. You need only disclose your name if you are cast. Please only audition if you are comfortable with this.

- The rates offered are not industry standard. In fact, I'm not supposed to be paying actors at all. However, I'm compensating off-book and seeing how this role needs special circumstances, I feel as if compensation of some sort is necessary. This is a student project, so in other words, we broke as hell.

MOST IMPORTANTLY:

This project is basically ADR work. I am casting for a particular phone call scene within the film that only lasts about 2 pages within the script (2-3 minutes in total). Your character will be on the other line, completely unseen. If cast, I will send over a reference scene for your recordings. Keep in mind, we do not expect any editing or post-processing on your end. All we expect are for your recordings to be timed in rhythm with the scene, around the same length as the scene that we will send you.

RULES FOR RECORDING:

- Please do not slate your audition(s).

- Please record lines in 123 123 format, and all in one file. Please do not submit separate takes as separate files.

- Please record a minimum 2 takes per line. Failure to do so will result in your audition being removed from consideration. If cast, multiple takes will be mandatory for full script records.

- Ad-libbing is welcomed, so long as it does not detract from the original line.

Latest Updates

  • We've wrapped up filming! We will cast this week!

    Hello!

Sorry for the lack of updates and not casting sooner as maybe some of you may have hoped. This update is only to let all of you know that this project is certainly not dead and it will not be one of the thousands of projects on CCC that's just left to rot.

Over the past 2 weeks, we've been working very hard to get everything filmed. We've wrapped officially two days ago, so that's a big hell yeah! Anyway, we're mentally and physically exhausted, but I should stop rambling and get to the important news.

We will officially cast this week.

I still have a good chunk of auditions to listen through, but I've been ecstatic at the amount of auditions and the performances that all of you have brought. You guys are all rockstars, thank you so much for showing interest whatsoever into this. It means a lot.

When we're done casting, I will be glad to give any feedback to anybody who wants it. As a voice actor myself, I've always appreciated any feedback that casting directors were able to give me regardless if I got the part or not. I'd love to do the same for y'all.

Sorry for this long ramble, just generally very happy that the project is being shaped up in the way that we've imagined it. You all have made us insanely hyped that we can nail the role of the Mom. Thank you, truly.

    Best,

    Lorenzo

The absolute epitome of support. Isabella's mother has her vices and virtues, but she will always love her daughter unconditionally. She takes deep considerations of people's thoughts and desires and a willingness to value those things. In other words, when it comes to people you should lay your head on, she is the ideal person. To Isabella, at least, she allows herself to be wrapped in a blanket of security and understanding whenever she speaks to her mother. That level of vulnerability that Isabella has speaks wonders to the kind of character and relationship in regards to this absolutely kind and loving person.

First and foremost, we are looking for imperfect and realistic performances. We want actors that are completely in tune with the emotions of the scene.

Voice Type: Any accent. She's in her mid-40s to late-50s, so her voice should have a slightly weathered and wise quality. It's also the kind of comforting voice that lets people know straight off the bat that you can confide in them. Bottom line is, we're not looking for a lot of archetypes, just great realistic performances. Experiment and have fun!

Line Prompts:

  1. 1. Isabella is calling her Mother on the phone. Through Mother's intuition, she gladly pushes aside her own worries to figure out what is wrong with her daughter.
  2. 2. Soft and kind. Complete and utter empathy.
  3. 3. Sombre, sad yet firm; with conviction. You desire better for your loved one.

  • Everything went good! It's just the knee, not a big deal. I'll be out tomorrow. How's everything going over there? (beat) You don't sound fine.

  • When you least expect it, nature has cunning ways of finding our weakest spot. Just remember I’m here. Right now, you may not want to feel anything. Maybe you’ll never want to feel anything. And, maybe it’s not to me you want to speak about these things, but I feel something you obviously did.

  • I may have come close, but I never had what you two have. Something always held me back or stood in the way. How you live your life is your business. Just remember, our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once, and before you know it, your heart’s worn out. And as for your body, there comes a point when no one looks at it, much less wants to come near it. Right now, there’s sorrow, pain; don’t kill it, and with it, the joy you’ve felt.
