ARTSEC Research Facility
Project Overview
About the game:
The game’s main feature is the usage of commonly used real-life laboratory equipment and procedures, including simplified representations of data acquisition software.
The story takes place in 1997. The ARTSEC Research Facility investigates mysterious objects of unknown origin, which have been discovered in a cave system on the remote tropical island of Isla Sombra.
Those objects are referred to as ‘Artifacts’ and their composition and effects don’t match the current understanding of science. They are geological objects, akin to rocks and crystals.
They react aggressively when coming into direct contact with organisms, triggering dangerous effects that can range from nausea and mania to genetic alteration and, in most cases, death.
The game takes a common sci-fi trope but explores how real scientists in real laboratories would test and analyze unknown materials. The lab equipment, machines and instruments used in game are modeled after their real life counterparts, both visually and in function.
You start as Dr. Phelps, a potential new hire for the facility who will have to prove himself before getting officially hired. Make a good impression on your first days, meet various distinct characters - and try not to lose your mind.

Dr. Phelps is a Physicist and the new hire and is partially inspired by the characters Sam Neill played in Event Horizon and In The Mouth of Madness. During the events of the game, he will slowly drift into a state of madness, before he finally snaps and goes rogue.
The script includes a bit of screaming (not excessive) and manic laughing as well.
Regarding the audition lines, each one represents one of the three mental stages the character will go through. The first one being his normal self, in the second he's entering a stage where his curiosity mixes with a feeling of unease - and in the third one he lost his mind completely.

Ms. Miller gave me this job offer just at the right time. A change of scenery will do me some good, especially after the ...private challenges I've had to deal with.
This is certainly an odd looking cave. I don't think I've seen anything like this before. It is hard to explain, but somehow it feels like something is... not right.
My... dear colleague... was on the brink of acquiring a deeper understanding regarding the... Artifacts, as you call them. I had to... remove him from the equation. Knowledge of such power is... reserved for the worthy...
Knox is the Facility Maintenance Manager. He is a cynical middle-aged man. Due to cut corners during construction of the facility, Knox barely can catch a proper break, which leads him to be overworked and in a constant grumpy mood. He has somewhat of a rivalry with the Head of Security, which usually results in them both taking jabs at each other.

Nothing says 'vacation is over' like being buried alive under a mountain of work orders, each one more delightful than the last. The accumulated relaxation of two weeks, destroyed in an instant.
I basically work two jobs with barely any downtime. I'm not as fortunate as Dunwell, who can easily delegate work to her officers.
Hello, Dr.Phelps. And before you ask, I'm aware that the servers are acting up again, but I currently have other priorities.
Dr. Andrew Hayden is a Theoretical Physicist and one of the lead scientists of the facility. During an unfortunate accident, his soft tissue got turned transparent. Hayden came to terms with his condition quickly, using his altered appearance to spook newcomers. This inappropriate behavior led to him getting reprimanded by the Head of Security once, a very uncomfortable situation for him. However, it is hard for him to resist the temptation as it gives him almost as much pleasure as working on his research. He is enthusiastic about his work and overall a very friendly guy.

Another interesting detail, regarding Artifacts and their effects, is the fact that the bigger the specimen, the more 'potent' it is. This is the case, because the Novutron's effects get amplified exponentially with increase in mass.
Bones are primarily composed of calcium phosphate minerals, such as hydroxyapatite, while soft tissues contain little to no minerals. And then there is Osteocalcin, a protein found in bone matrix. It has a distinct molecular structure compared to other body proteins.
She has that kind of scrutinizing look that pierces right through me. Even a casual chat feels like some sort of interrogation sometimes. And let me tell you, Dr. Phelps, after she got those additional... predatory features, it got even worse.
Professor Jacob Baker is a Physicist, business man and founder of the ARTSEC Research Facility. During the initial exploration of the cave system on Isla Sombra, he came into contact with an Artifact, causing a genetic mutation akin to an extreme form of albinism. His connections and businesses are shrouded in mystery. He is fascinated by the Artifacts and the potential they hold. Every person working in the facility has been handpicked by himself and he values the people working there.

My active laboratory days ended a long time ago. And with the founding of ARTSEC, my globetrotter days as well. Now I can focus on what truly matters, Dr. Phelps. Solving the enigma of the Artifacts.
Everyone working here has been carefully selected and this facility cannot make meaningful progress without the people working here. I value my personnel, Dr. Phelps.
Not only does the local wildlife avoid the cave, there is no trace of other lifeforms. No plants, no microorganisms. It's almost like nature knows something we don't
Chris Hudson - a former U.S Army Ranger - is a security officer, mainly responsible for surveillance and communication. During a major incident during the transportation of a powerful Artifact, he and his colleagues got their DNA spliced with their guard dog. He is, all things considered, a fairly average and friendly guy, taking his resposibility seriously and likes to assist his colleagues and others when he can.
Hudson will be a companion character during the last half of the game, following the Player through the facility.

My main resposibility is managing and maintaining the surveillance systems, so I spend most of my time in the SecOffice in front of a wall of screens.
Wasn't really expecting to be part of a freak show when I arrived here, but since there is currently no chance of reversing the transformation, we will have to accept our new reality for now. I try to be positive about it, because it could've been worse. A lot worse.
So far, the damage is within expected parameters. A power surge most likely damaged the main power distributor. Until it's fixed, we have to rely on the backup generators.
Rachel Miller is the Director's secretary and responsible for the majority of administrative work around the facility. She is mainly a tutorial character, guiding the Player through their evaluation phase.

Dr.Hayden is the Lead Scientist of the B-Wing, where most of the testing is being conducted. He is currently the most knowledgeable regarding the Artifacts and their effects.
I can see the scientific potential behind this operation, but so far we've lost good people and are still waiting on a real breakthrough when it comes to understanding the Artifacts. I just hope it'll be worth it in the end.
Your assigned task for today is a simple Thermal Testing procedure. Before you head down to Laboratory Wing A, please see Sergeant Dunwell in the Security Office. She will give you the mandatory Safety Handbook and your ID Card. You will need the card to access the laboratories and storage rooms.
