Aladdin is the protagonist of the movie. A street rat from the city of Agrabah, Aladdin spent much of his youth scraping for food and ducking guards with his monkey sidekick Abu. He sustains a heroically selfless deposition, which in turn made him entitled to a magic lamp concealing a wish-granting genie. Despite his upbringing, Aladdin is a generally optimistic, fun-loving, and charming character. Though he's forced to steal for survival, he shows joy in escaping the brutish guards, alongside his sidekick Abu, and shows an attempt to find enjoyment in the struggles of his day-to-day life. Nevertheless, though he does not mind stealing from the marketplace denizens, albeit forcibly so, Aladdin is, in no way, a selfish character. Not only are the thefts for survival, but Aladdin is also never above sacrificing his food for the less fortunate of Agrabah, such as starving children. While harboring a modest amount of physical prowess, Aladdin's true strength lies within his intelligence and wit. He utilizes these aspects to best his enemies, and such practices have proven effective in various situations throughout the film. He is a quick-thinker, with the ability to formulate a scheme (usually varying in scale, making him rather versatile) that ends in his favor. Aladdin also takes advantage of his societal stereotype to further his schemes, as most wouldn't expect a meager street urchin to have the intellect to outwit others. Although generally cheery and fun-loving, Aladdin is also shown to be insecure throughout the film's events. Being a street rat, Aladdin normally faces discrimination in the city of Agrabah and is seen as a worthless member of society. This cruelty eventually led Aladdin to believe such claims; he saw himself as unworthy of Princess Jasmine's affections, believing she deserved someone of higher class and, by extension, someone who can provide for her.
[Staring at the palace of Agrabah, Dreaming]
Some day, Abu, things are gonna change. We'll be rich, live in a palace, and never have any problems at all.[After learning Genie's rules]
Provisos? You mean, limitations on wishes? Some all-powerful genie. He can't even bring people back from the dead. I don't know, Abu. He probably can't even get us outta this cave. Looks like we're gonna hafta find a way outta here.[Singing One Jump Ahead]
Gotta eat to live, gotta steal to eat
Tell you all about it when I got the timeOne jump ahead of the slowpokes
One skip ahead of my doom
Next time gonna use a nom de plume
One jump ahead of the hitmen
One hit ahead of the flock
I think I'll take a stroll around the blockOne jump ahead of the hoofbeats
One hop ahead of the hump
One trick ahead of disaster
They're quick, but I'm much faster
Here goes
Better throw my hand in, wish me happy landin'
All I gotta do is jump!
The Genie is a comedic, larger-than-life spirit who acts as a servant to whoever holds ownership of the magic lamp in which he resides. Genie possesses phenomenal cosmic power that allows him to grant wishes, shape-shift, and transcend space and time; however, he is burdened to remain bound to his lamp for eternity unless granted freedom by a master. Genie is full of life and bursting with positive energy. Though he is amongst the most powerful, chaotic beings in the universe, Genie is benevolent, easygoing, and friendly; so much so that he primarily uses his abilities as a means to amuse both himself and those around him. Genie's energy is a direct result of his imprisonment; his years of isolation have left him teaming with vigor, so whenever he is given a chance at freedom, his first instinct is to go wild with his powers by cracking jokes and entertaining whatever audience he has. He is also inviting, as when he first met Aladdin, Genie immediately introduced himself as a friend to rely on and emphasized the fact that his purpose was to magically enhance Aladdin's life by any means necessary (so long as it did not interfere with the three rules of wishing). Though he was generally devoted to whoever held temporary ownership of the lamp, Genie has always had a will and mind of his own, outside the bounds of a stereotypical genie slave. Though mischievous, manic, and explosive, Genie is also compassionate, wise, and serious when he feels it's necessary. He understands human emotions to a profound degree and takes matters such as love, trust, and being true to yourself quite seriously. His more sincere moments are indicated by his tone, which changes from wily and exuberant, to low and soft when he wants to get a serious point across. Despite this, he still tries to lighten even the darkest moments with a dose of comedy.
That’s right! He can be taught!! What would you wish of me, (as Arnold Schwarzenegger) the ever impressive, (inside a cube) the long contained, (as a ventriloquist with a dummy) often imitated, (tosses the dummy aside) but never duplicated-- (He multiplies into multiple GENIES who surround him.)
DUP. GENIES:
Duplicated, duplicated, duplicated, duplicated, duplicated, duplicated, duplicated, duplicated, duplicated.(Says it like a ring announcer at a boxing match.) Genie Of The Lamp! (Goes into Ed Sullivan) Right here direct from the lamp, right here for your enjoyment wish fulfillment. Thank you!
[Sarcastic and Hurt at Aladdin breaking his promise]
Fine. I understand. After all, you've lied to everyone else. Hey, I was just beginning to feel left out. Now, if you'll excuse me, "Master". [vanishes into his lamp][Singing Friend Like Me]
So doncha sit there slack jawed, buggy eyed
I'm here to answer all your midday prayers
You got me bona fide, certified
You got a genie for your chare d'affaires
I got a powerful urge to help you out
So what-cha wish? I really wanna know
You got a list that's three miles long, no doubt
Well, all you gotta do is rub like so - and ohMister Aladdin, sir, have a wish or two or three
I'm on the job, you big nabob
You ain't never had a friend, never had a friend
You ain't never had a friend, never had a friend
You ain't never had a friend like me
You ain't never had a friend like me
Princess Jasmine is the princess of Agrabah, a Middle Eastern kingdom ruled by her father, the Sultan. As the future Sultana, Jasmine has a strong sense of obligation to her kingdom. Because of outdated laws, however, she is forbidden to go beyond the palace walls and is forced to follow unjust practices. Refusing to be treated like a sheltered object, Jasmine desperately aspires to diverge from her societal confines, to live a life where she is free to make her own choices. Jasmine is introduced as feisty and no-nonsense, with zero tolerance for anyone who dares to belittle her. Strong-willed and defiant, Jasmine is not afraid to speak her mind, nor will she hesitate to stand up for what she believes is right. However, Jasmine's attitude often puts her at odds with her father and other members of the elite, who are content with sticking to the status quo and express frustration with her refusal to do the same. She has been something of an outcast amongst royalty as a result, so she developed a standoffish nature and sometimes acts incredibly stubborn as a defense mechanism. More comically, releasing Rajah on those who annoy her is another defense mechanism for which she has become infamous. Being aware of her sex appeal and its effect on others, Jasmine is notorious for flaunting her assets to gain the trust of her enemies, only to betray and/or humiliate them when the time is right. Despite her cunning, Jasmine can sometimes be too fussy and act without thinking things through.
Oh, Father! Rajah was just playing with him. Weren't you, Rajah? You were just playing with that overdressed, self-absorbed Prince Achmed, weren't you? (she and her tiger chuckle and then see the Sultan glaring at them) Ahem...
[Angry]
How dare you! All of you! Standing around deciding my future?! I am not a prize to be won![Singing A Whole New World]
A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
(Now I'm in a whole new world with you)Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky
A whole new world
Abu is a mischievous, kleptomaniacal monkey and Aladdin's loyal partner-in-crime. Unlike Aladdin, who steals to survive, Abu is a talented kleptomaniac, with unshakable urges to steal whatever catches his interests, be it riches, food, or anything else. This can land him into quite a bit of trouble and appears to even frustrate Aladdin from time to time. Abu can also be quite greedy and selfish in this regard, as he constantly takes more than he needs. Nevertheless, the monkey has redeemable qualities and, at his core, has a soft heart. Despite his antagonistic traits, Abu is among Aladdin's most loyal and loving companions. The two share a mutual admiration for one another, and so much so on Abu's part that the monkey can become rather jealous when Aladdin's attention is given to someone else, like the princess.
ALADDIN: Perfect timing, Abu. As usual.
ABU: Hello!
[Peeking out from the vase, finding out the peasant girl is Princess Jasmine]
The princess?[after grabbing the jewel There is a rumbling and the room begins to shake]
Uh oh.
The Sultan is the benevolent ruler of Agrabah and the father of Princess Jasmine. The Sultan's primary concerns are the welfare of his daughter and his people. As such, he devotes himself to pairing Jasmine with an upstanding heir so that his family and kingdom will be secure long after his passing. The Sultan is generally very childish and pompous, but extremely kind at his core. Soft-spoken and gentle, he is a direct foil to the fiery and no-nonsense Jasmine. Though he dearly loves Jasmine, he is initially frustrated due to her constant rejection of potential suitors and pushes her to choose a husband. However, he explains his actions regarding the subject as arising from a need to make certain that Jasmine is taken care of and provided for, as he is starting to get up in years. In relation to this, the Sultan, like the other main characters, is trapped in one way or another. For the Sultan, he is trapped by his need to uphold an outdated law, and by doing so, he risks both Jasmine's free will and the loving relationship they share. The Sultan also prides himself on being an excellent judge of character. However, contrary to his own belief, he is rather gullible. Aside from his childish mind, he has shown to be a worthy ruler, knowing when to put his power into good use and can be strict and forceful on rare occasions.
Jasmine, it’s not only this law. I’m not going to be around forever, and I just want to make sure you’re taken care of, provided for.
[Frustrated at Jasmine]
Oooohhh! (To Rajah) Allah forbid you should have any daughters![Hypnotized by Jafar]
Here, Jafar. Whatever you need will be fine.
Rajah is Princess Jasmine's loyal, protective pet tiger and constant companion. Rajah is Jasmine's best friend and fierce protector. As such, he cares deeply for the princess, and repeatedly supports her, not once showing a hint of disloyalty or true aggression towards her. Rajah is mostly known for being rather aggressive and intolerable, as he takes a disliking to anyone who annoys Jasmine, even slightly—including narcissistic suitors like Prince Achmed, "Prince Ali", and even the Sultan. However, when with Jasmine, Rajah is docile and gentle.
(Growls, Annoyed)
(Roars)
(Lets out a tiny kitty meow after being turned into a kitten by Jafar)
Jafar is the main antagonist. As Royal Vizier of Agrabah, he is presented as the Sultan's most trusted and loyal advisor. In truth, the imperious Jafar holds passionate disdain for the Sultan. He dedicates the latter half of his life to gaining ownership of a magic lamp containing an all-powerful genie — to that end, Jafar would control cosmic power, which he will use to overtake the throne and the world at large. Jafar is portrayed as an immoral psychopath who will not hesitate to destroy anyone he perceives as a threat to his sinister designs. Like numerous clinically-diagnosed psychopaths, Jafar wears a metaphorical mask of normalcy, establishing himself as a cool-headed schemer and gaining the trust of those around him, despite his rather untrustworthy physical appearance. Even with this mask, Jafar's psychopathic tendencies tend to seep through. Jafar displays narcissistic tendencies, his most obvious ones being his obsessive desire for power and sense of entitlement. However, his lust for power does not stem from a mere desire for authority (though this is a motivating factor), but rather an intolerance for subordination. Jafar detests being "second best" to anyone else—be it the Sultan or a cosmic entity such as the Genie. Jafar is also attracted to Princess Jasmine, but primarily for her physical appearance, and not for Jasmine herself as a person.
[Having learned from the Cave of Wonders]
Yes. Only one may enter. I must find this one. This Diamond in the Rough.[After Aladdin has returned]
YOU! How many times do I have to kill you, boy?!So Ali turns out to be merely Aladdin
Just a con, need I go on? Take it from me
His personality flaws
Give me adequate cause
To send him packing on a one-way trip
So his prospects take a terminal dip
His assets frozen, the venue chosen
Is the ends of the earth, whoopee!(Spoken)
So long!(Sung)
Ex-prince, Ali! (Laughs Maniacally)
Iago is a sarcastic, loud-mouthed, and short-tempered macaw that serves as Jafar's sidekick during the latter's attempt to rule Agrabah. Iago appears to be just as evil and cruel as his superior—being uncaring, murderous, deceitful, and cunning. However, Iago is the more aggressive of the two, as well as the more vocal and easily frustrated. He has difficulty keeping his opinions to himself and has a habit of shouting and ranting about his annoyances when things don't go as planned. Like Jafar, Iago craves power; the thought of having control over the city (and more specifically, the Sultan), is what seemingly drives his motivations. Iago cares nothing for those he would have to eliminate to obtain power. He also seems to hate crackers. The Sultan—apparently being utterly unaware of Iago's distaste for them—often fed him directly to the mouth, which also acts as the main reason he aids Jafar in his treacherous ambitions against the Sultan.
[Playing the role of the Parrot]
What’s coming to you. Awk!I can't believe it! I just don't believe it! We're never gonna get ahold of that stupid lamp! Just forget it! Look at this. Look at this! I'm so ticked off that I'm molting!
Well, that’s it--we’re dead, forget about it. Just dig a grave for both of us. We’re dead.
The Peddler is a comical merchant with a mysterious connection to the tales of Agrabah. The Peddler appears at the very beginning of the film, to tell the story of how the lamp "changed the course of a young man's life".
Ahh! Salaam and good evening to you, worthy friend. Please, please, come closer. [camera hits him in the face] Too close! A little too close. [camera backs up] There. Welcome to Agrabah. City of mystery, of enchantment, and the finest merchandise this side of the river Jordan, on sale today. Come on down. Heh, heh.
Do not be fooled by its commonplace appearance. Like so many things, it is not what is outside, but what is inside that counts. (Audience starts to leave) This is no ordinary lamp! It once changed the course of a young man's life; a young man who, like this lamp, was more than what he seemed: a diamond in the rough.
Arabian nights
Like Arabian days
More often than not
Are hotter than hot
In a lotta good ways
Arabian nights
'Neath Arabian moons
A fool off his guard
Could fall and fall hard
Out there on the dunes
Razoul is the captain of the Agrabah Guard. Razoul's position and merciless treatment towards delinquents made him a longtime rival of the notorious street rat, Aladdin. Razoul takes his job as Captain of Agrabah's Guards extremely seriously. He shows no sympathy for lawbreakers, whether young, old, male, or female. He appears to take pleasure from the authority he commands and performing acts of violence and is quite happy to carry out executions. However, he lacks the same crazed lust for power that characters like Jafar show and obeys his orders. Razoul is extremely loyal to the Sultan and Jasmine and cares a great deal about them beyond their royal status.
[Chasing Aladdin]
Stop, Thief! I’ll have your hands for a trophy, street rat![Catching Aladdin]
We just keep running into each other, don’t we, street rat?[Speaking with Jasmine]
Well, I would, princess, but my orders come from Jafar. You’ll have to take it up with him.
The Royal Guards are commanded by Razoul, patrolling both the palace and the streets of Agrabah. They serve as both Agrabah's police force and Jafar's henchmen during his time as Royal Vizier.
GUARD 1: There he is!
GUARD 2: You won’t get away so easy!
GUARD 1: He’s got a sword!
GUARD 2: You idiot--we’ve ALL got swords.
[Singing in One Jump Ahead]
Rip him open, take it back guys!
Gazeem is Jafar's accomplice. He is a thief and murderer, enlisted by Jafar to help obtain a magic lamp.
A thousand apologies, O patient one.
I had to slit a few throats, but I got it. (Pulls out half of the medallion. Jafar reaches out for it, but Gazeem yanks it back.) Ah-ah-ahhh. The treasure.
(gasps) It is I, Gazeem, a humble thief.
Prince Achmed is one of Jasmine's many suitors and the most recent until "Prince Ali" entered the picture. He is shown to be selfish, heartless, unkind, and snobbish. He cares little for people he perceives to be lesser than him.
[Seeing children in his way]
Out of my way, you filthy brat![To Aladdin]
Oh! You are a worthless street rat! You were born a street rat, you’ll die a street rat, and only your fleas will mourn you.[Outraged at being embarrassed by Rajah and Jasmine]
Good luck marrying her off.
The Harem girls are shown to be somewhat snobbish, as evidenced by their dismissal of Aladdin. However, they do seem very fond of Prince Ali, and presumably any other handsome individual due to their swooning his highly-publicized arrival at Agrabah.
[Singing in One Jump Ahead]
(Spoken)
Who?
(sung)
Oh, it's sad, Aladdin's hit the bottom
He's become a one-man rise in crime[Singing Prince Ali]
There's no question this Ali's alluring
Never ordinary, never boring
Everything about the man just plain impresses
He's a winner, he's a whiz, a wonder!
He's about to pull my heart asunder!
And I absolutely love the way he dresses!
Farouk is a vendor in the marketplace. Farouk is depicted as having a very harsh and no-nonsense attitude, not tolerating theft (or what he perceives as theft) in any way. To a certain degree, he is also shown to be a brutish savage. Farouk is ready to engage in the most amoral acts to make a profit, no matter what the cost.
You’d better be able to pay for that.
No one steals from my cart.
Thief!
Do you know what the penalty is for stealing?
You er know this girl?
She said she knows the Sultan.
