Maria is the mother of Mavka, the story's main heroine. She is a young, lively girl whose life was shattered by an unhappy marriage.

Out of fear of social judgement and her own helplessness, she leaves her child to die in the forest.

Voice age: Late teens (around 17)

Personality: Sad, desperate, emotional and hopeless.
Voice requirements: A youthful voice capable of conveying grief, desperation, trembling and sobbing.
Audition directions:

Line 1: Maria is physically running while desperately reciting a prayer. She speaks hurriedly and breathlessly, struggling to catch her breath.

Line 2: She is crying, overwhelmed by grief and helplessness. She cares deeply for her child but feels powerless to help
