The sides they read from:

  • (gentle, sad. Otis's friend Skip, the lifeguard, was just killed; Otis tells the new guy he's sorry) Friend. I heard about Skip. I'm sorry. He came to my window for coffee every night.

  • (dry. Otis gives the new guy rowing advice before he crosses the lake at night) In a straight line. Keep your arms in the boat. That's what Skip would tell you.

  • (amazed. The new guy brings back the life ring and says the monster chased him across the lake in a rowboat) That's the one. It came after you out there? In a boat? Rowing?
