He is assigned to investigate the Hangman’s murder of O’Hara, putting him directly on the trail of the killer.

After an attempt is made on Gordon’s life, Gustavson becomes Gordon’s personal bodyguard. His loyalty ultimately costs him his life. Gustavson is found hanging over Gordon’s car in the GCPD parking garage, becoming another victim of the Hangman. His death deeply affects the task force and prompts Gordon to consider pulling them from the investigation.
