Danny Pennington is a troubled, rebellious punk kid navigating a deeply fractured home life. As the oldest son of Charles "Chuck" Pennington and the older brother of the hyperactive Zach, Danny carries a heavy chip on his shoulder. He shares a bitterly strained relationship with his father, viewing Chuck's constant academic worrying and dorky, overbearing parenting style as suffocating. Feeling completely misunderstood at home and suffocated by his family's grief and high expectations, Danny has chosen to seek a dangerous sense of belonging out on the grimy streets.
Unbeknownst to his well-meaning father, Danny has completely embraced a double life. He has fallen in with a ruthless street gang known as the Purple Dragons, a crew of runaway delinquents and thieves who thrive on chaos and crime. To the Purple Dragons, Danny isn't just a quiet, resentful kid—he's a street-smart asset willing to push the limits to prove himself.
Danny treats the gang as his real family, finding a sense of power and freedom in their lawless lifestyle that he never felt under his father's roof. He wears his punk attitude like a shield, using anger to mask the underlying guilt of lying to his family. Blinded by a desire to feel independent and strong, Danny remains blissfully unaware that his loyalty to the Purple Dragons is a fast track to ruin, placing him on a direct collision course with the law—and eventually, the very family he is trying so hard to run away from.
