Every Way Back to You (Book One of The Home We Make Series)
Simon Garbutt for Marcus Carter (British Accent)
Marcus Carter (British Accent)
Marcus is charming, well-presented, and easy to like — at first. He speaks calmly, picks up the bill without being asked, and always has the right thing to say. Nothing about him reads as threatening until you look closer at his behavior.
He doesn't shout or lose control. His version of anger is quiet and deliberate, pressure rather than explosion. His manipulation is careful and deliberate, disguised as concern and affection.
The most important thing for this role is that the early charm has to land as genuine. If Marcus sounds sinister from his first line, the story doesn't work. Listeners need to understand how Rowan ended up where he did.
Accent: Essex, but deliberately suppressed to blend in. Marcus presents as well-spoken and neutral at the start, consistent with his carefully maintained image. As the story progresses and his control begins to fracture, the suppression slips with it. By the end, it's largely gone. This shift is written into the dialogue as his self-control slips so the VA will be able to track it.

(early charm, completely convincing): You've never told me no. / Still conquering the lesson plans? / Next time, just let me help you. You're good at brainy things, but your DIY skills are clearly a cry for help.
(control dressed up as concern, mask starting to show): Protective... Or maybe possessive? Think about it. He shows up out of nowhere after years of barely being around, and suddenly he's concerned about who you're dating. Feels a bit convenient.
(mask completely gone, accent surfacing): This is your fault, ya know. Yours and his. He had to come sniffin' around. Had to play therapist like he had any fuckin' clue what was goin' on.
