The Whittler

The Whittler is an older man seated on a wooden front porch at dusk, quietly whittling a piece of raw wood as he tells his stories.  He is not warm and grandfatherly, nor is he theatrical. He does not moralize. He does not raise his voice.

We imagine him seated in a rocking chair at dusk, whittling wood — but his voice carries more weight than his appearance ever would.

He speaks with the calm certainty of someone who has already seen how the story ends.

There is no rush in him, and certainly no melodrama.  He is a man who seems to know all - a kind of southern Oracle.  You'd be afraid to approach him, but would be entranced by his talk, and what he has to say.

His Southern cadence should feel natural and lived-in.  This means no exaggeration of caricature.  Think restraint, not charm.

each episode he frames with quiet awareness. He seems to know more than he says, but he never explains. He does not judge the characters. He simply presents what happened… and lets the silence do the rest.
