Victor Frankenstein’s cousin, adopted sister, and promised fiancée. In many ways, they are equally as much an unwilling victim of this arrangement as the other is. Formidable, considerate, and responsible, although struggling beneath the surface, she loves Victor as a brother, friend, and nothing more, yet wearily accepts her place in the Frankenstein family out of duty. The entire forced marriage between her and Victor will serve as a catalyst for much of his madness.

[Erratically] I rely on her innocence as sincerely as I do my own. This poor girl, whom I sincerely love, is to be torn away by a worse fate.
[Despairingly] Yet you must die, you, my playfellow, my companion, my more than sister, I can never survive so horrible a misfortune!
