The Modern Prometheus — Animated Frankenstein adaptation [PILOT]

The Modern Prometheus — Animated Frankenstein adaptation [PILOT]

Project Overview

A pilot episode for an animated adaptation of the 1818 version of Mary Shelley’s novel, ‘Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus’. This is an independent project, and will rely largely on donations for funding, so therefore will likely be a long-term, slow endeavour to complete.

The pilot will cover the beginning of the novel, to Victor’s departure for Ingolstadt. Should the pilot be fully completed and perform well, and should we continue to acquire funding, it is likely the show will continue, and therefore you will be re-offered your role. Do not audition or accept if you are not open to returning, but don’t worry, extended conversations about the specifics of this will be had, and we will be very flexible with scheduling.

  • [Irritated] Yes, I suppose not… frightfully inconvenient.

  • [Slightly afraid and intrigued] From here… it almost resembles one of Dante’s creations from the inferno… what the devil…?

  • In truth, my dear, such a strange accident has befallen us that my heart has been shaken to its core… it may be sooner than you receive this letter that we should meet again.

  • [Weary, desperate but attempting to conceal it] It gives me the greatest delight to see you, but tell me how you left my father, brothers, and Elizabeth.

  • [Angry, grieving, erratic] Abhorred monster! Fiend that thou art! The tortures of hell are too mild a vengeance for thy crimes!

  • [Despairing] Why did I not die? More miserable than man ever was before, why did I not sink into forgetfulness and rest? Of what materials was I made, that I could thus resist so many shocks, which, like the turning of the wheel, continually renewed the torture?

Age: 17– early 20s

Victor Frankenstein’s childhood best friend, the son of a merchant, and a very optimistic, heroic, extroverted, good-natured, romantic sort of man. Almost Victor’s antithesis in being very psychologically and morally stable, in contrast to his best friend, who is grief and guilt-stricken for much of the story. Highly passionate about language, literature, travel, the outdoors — in essence, a true romantic.

  • [Firmly, but softly] Compose yourself. I will not mention it, if it agitates you, but your father and cousin would be very happy if they received a letter from you in your own handwriting.

  • [Very concerned] My dear Victor! What for God’s sake is the matter? Do not laugh in that manner. How ill you are! What is the cause of all this?

  • [Happily] My dear Frankenstein, how glad I am to see you!

Victor Frankenstein’s cousin, adopted sister, and promised fiancée. In many ways, they are equally as much an unwilling victim of this arrangement as the other is. Formidable, considerate, and responsible, although struggling beneath the surface, she loves Victor as a brother, friend, and nothing more, yet wearily accepts her place in the Frankenstein family out of duty. The entire forced marriage between her and Victor will serve as a catalyst for much of his madness.

  • [Gently] Dear Victor, if you are not very ill, write yourself, and make your father and all of us happy — or — I cannot bear to think of the other side of the question, my tears already flow. Adieu, my dearest cousin.

  • [Erratically] I rely on her innocence as sincerely as I do my own. This poor girl, whom I sincerely love, is to be torn away by a worse fate.

  • [Despairingly] Yet you must die, you, my playfellow, my companion, my more than sister, I can never survive so horrible a misfortune!

Victor Frankenstein’s mother. A distant and conflicting memory to him, she was married to her father’s friend following his death, and subsequently was the one to arrange Victor and Elizabeth’s marriage on her deathbed, as her dying wish. Victor speaks of her lovingly and admirably, yet after her death, she haunts his nightmares. Letting this quote from the novel speak for herself, “I have often heard my mother say, that she was at that time the most beautiful child she had ever seen, and shewed signs even then of a gentle and affectionate disposition. These indications, and a desire to bind as closely as possible the ties of domestic love, determined my mother to consider Elizabeth as my future wife; a design which she never found reason to repent.”

  • [Struggling, wearily] My children, my firmest hopes of future happiness were placed on the prospect of your union. This expectation will now be the consolation of your father.

  • But these are not thoughts befitting me; I will endeavour to resign myself cheerfully to death.

Victor’s father, a syndic, who married his best friend’s daughter after his death. A slightly harsh man, but not a bitter one. He cares for his children, in his own way, yet only as a father would usually do, and does not know them particularly well. A little nïave, or rather uncaring. Almost emotionally neglectful, to an extent.

  • [Thoughtlessly] Ah! Cornelius Agrippa! My dear Victor, do not waste your time upon this, it is sad trash.

  • [Shocked] What do you mean, Victor? Are you mad?

  • [Bluntly] What a place you inhabit, my son! You travelled to seek happiness, but a fatality seems to pursue you. And poor Clerval…
