Dr. Cornelius is Caspian and Cassia's professor.  Though Miraz forbid any telling of the Narnian tales, Dr. Cornelius broke this rule in secret and taught the two siblings all there was to know of Old Narnia.  He became a close friend and instructor to Caspian, and later saved his life by helping him escape the castle after Miraz's son was born.  Cassia got into frequent arguments with him growing up because of her hatred for Narnian tales, but she also respected the professor and appreciated that he also respected her as a woman and not just a princess, so she never told Miraz about his defiance.  Miraz locks Dr. Cornelius into the dungeons once his betrayal is revealed, but Caspian and the rest of the Narnians free him during the raid on the castle.
