Miraz is the tyrannical ruler of the kingdom.  While he is not officially crowned king until after the failed raid, he has behaved as if he had been ever since Caspian's father's death.  He is a man who craves power and doesn't care who he has to trample in order to get it.  He has manipulated Cassia for over fifteen years to gain her trust and manipulate her to do what he wants, and it is later revealed that he killed his own brother then lied about him dying in his sleep.  Once Cassia learns the truth, Miraz throws her in the dungeon and plans to execute her on the battlefield so her brother can watch.  However, before this can occur, Miraz participates in a duel with Peter and though he leaves with his life, he is then immediately killed by one of his own comrades who wants the power for himself.
