Grantaire is the infamous skeptic. He often mocks and berates the trivialities of Enjolras's endeavor but deeply respects his persistence. He is unintentionally a comic soul, bereft with much cynicism that alights laughter from those who are not Combeferre or Enjolras, the latter of whom seems to despise his presence almost entirely. In his stoic and philosophically withdrawn nature, Grantaire serves as the whetstone to the ideals of Les Amis de l'ABC.
