To the Will of the People: A Les Misérables Audio Drama (OLD #1)

To the Will of the People: A Les Misérables Audio Drama (OLD #1)

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of Theft of Clef Productions, I welcome you to the official casting call for Season 1 of “To the Will of the People,” an upcoming audio drama based around the amazing Les Misérables by Victor Hugo that features original stories and character developments centered around the Les Amis d’ABC. This is our first attempt at audio drama production, and we would love to have you along for the ride as we find our place within this merry medium. The audio drama intends on being faithful to the ideals of Hugo’s writing but does not assume itself to be a faithful adaption, as it offers a more intimate and nuanced exploration of your favorite characters, so expect creative liberties to be taken. Serious and mature acting abilities are desired (that’s not to say there won’t be relief from the tragedies).

Our plan is to cast for just season one, which is comprised of six episodes, and hopefully, use its production as a prototype to get our proverbial foot into the door and hopefully spur on more seasons in the future. Because of this, the thematic structure is left simplistic on purpose. We intend on feeling our way through various emotions in these episodes but not in any catastrophic way (at least, not yet).

We’re not heavily gender-specific on casting for roles, which means that anybody can audition for any role if they so desire. In fact, our in-house Enjolras is female. However, the genders of the characters are listed as they are depicted in Hugo’s work for those interested. The cast list (barring already occupied roles) for season one features ten roles, which you can find below. Of these ten, the first three are principal characters, the next five are secondary, and the final two are minor characters. However, it is likely that, in later seasons, secondary and minor characters will receive more focus during specific episodes.

  • [Male] Combeferre

  • [Male] Courfeyrac

  • [Male] Grantaire

  • [Male] Jean “Jehan” Prouvaire

  • [Male] Bahorel

  • [Male] Lesgle | L’aigle | Bossuet

  • [Male] Joly

  • [Male] Feuilly

  • [Female] Éponine

  • [Female] Madame Hucheloup

All roles are primarily in English, however, there are the occasional snippets of French in either common phrases or longer songs (sung particularly by Jehan). The language/vernacular tries to be fitting with the time period (the 1830s) but we’re not being sticklers about language so much as we are trying to tell compelling stories. However, we are looking for Feuilly and Jehan specifically to feature a more prominent French accent. If we get to the stage where we’re able to begin production on a second season, we will come back to cast roles introduced in that season.

Please keep in mind that anyone cast in season one may be required to fill in for smaller roles not featured here, such as extras. Although, since these are not paid roles (see below), we cannot reasonably expect everyone who is cast to be able to participate forever, however, we do ask that you make an effort to at least make it through the season you are cast in before retiring from the project.

At this point in time, we lack the ability to financially reimburse actors for their work, but we hope that we get to a point where we can. Everyone on the production team is doing this for the fun of it and to get experience with the medium. Due to the nature of their work, we will pay for a sound designer if it is absolutely necessary and if they are within a reasonable pay range for this project as needed (unless somebody out there wants to take a chance on us).

AUDITIONS AND DEADLINES

The deadline for auditions is June 11th, 2021. This is a soft deadline. If things go according to plan, callbacks will be announced on June 14th, 2021, and roles will be finalized by June 23rd, at which point the cast will receive the scripts. We would like to have all linework from voice actors done by July 23rd. This is a soft deadline, as we can extend depending on the flow of work from voice actors, however, we cannot extend past July 31st. Our plan is to record together through Discord voice chats where possible and only record lines in isolation if necessary. We also plan on having the entire season past post-production before we post them. The posting of the episodes will likely be spaced out.

If you are auditioning, we also ask that you fill out this brief Google Forms questionnaire that will help us make informed and fair decisions about our casting choices. If you do not fill out this form, you will not be considered.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Our primary, non-negotiable means of communication is Discord. Please include your Discord name and tag number, your preferred nickname/name, and your preferred pronouns in the comments of your audition. Expect a lot of friendliness. The production team is a close-knit group but we all have a lot of experience with casting fan musicals and the like. Our Director is a veteran in musicals across Smule and has a degree in theatre. Don’t let that daunt you! We’ll make sure you feel right at home!

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU

First and foremost, we’re asking for your patience. As mentioned before, this is our first audio drama and we have no idea what awaits us throughout this process. We’re undoubtedly going to make mistakes and we’ll try to own up to them as quickly and selflessly as possible.

We’re asking for your dedication. Again, this isn’t a paid gig (yet) but if we want to walk away with something incredible to show off to people, it will take a degree of investment and commitment from everyone involved to make it a reality. We’re asking for you to join us on this long journey and give a piece of yourself to make it all the more mind-blowing when it’s finished.

We’re asking for your experience. If there are those of you who have knowledge of the audio drama industry and would love to help some rookies out on their first big move, we’ll all be thankful for it. Even solid acting is a form of experience, as it shows us what we should expect when working with and for actors and actresses. And if your knowledge carries on past acting, I’m sure we’ll find a use for it.

We’re asking for your joy. We want to do our best to make this a memorable and fun experience. If we haven’t done that, then why are we here at all? We want to get to know you better. We want to laugh and cry with you as we feel out the story we have to tell here.

We’re asking for your cooperation. Our plan is to have the recording process be interactive and done simultaneously in the places where we can manage it. Expect a lot of back-and-forth and involvement from the production team. We’ll explore your acting style, the feeling of the characters, the story, and everything else involved in the process.

As far as audition recordings are concerned, please do your best to submit clean recordings (no air conditioners, idle chatter, etc., in the background). We are in talks with a friendly sound designer who may be able to help mitigate some of the issues relating to audio quality when we begin recording. Regardless, we will handle everything related to audio post-processing.

It is important that all participants have access to headphones that they can use during Discord calls and record all of their lines using (preferably) Audacity, GarageBand, or an equivalent program.

WHO WE ARE

We’re Theft of Clef! We started out sharing our love of musical theatre in the form of a D&D group and that love of literature and theatre expanded into roleplays, fan casts, and so much more! Now we’re looking to produce something far more substantial and we want you along for the ride.

FINAL NOTES

Expect updates and edits. As we proceed through the audition process, it is likely that we will need to amend our current information to match our acquired knowledge. If you have any questions about any part of the process, don't hesitate to reach out to us here through the CCC chat service.

  • Reviving Project: Re-Casting Grantaire and Bahorel

    Hello, everybody!

It's been a long time since we last brought this project up.

While it didn't go quite like I hoped, we made more progress than I could have imagined. We have complete scripts written and ready to record through episode 4, with 5 under draft, and 6 being the last for the first season.

In the time, I learned a lot about managing projects along with major real life changes, learned about my writing and direction style, and learned how much I have to rely on the grace of other people to make progress.

Due to real-life changes, our originally casted Grantaire and Bahorel were unable to continue with the project. We'd like to find some willing volunteers to fill in their places. You'll have the opportunity to record their parts from scratch starting with episode 1. Grantaire is a major character (in that he's in episode one, and has quite a bit of speaking time), and Bahorel is a minor (he appears in later episodes, and has smaller speaking time).

We'd love to collect a few auditions for these roles before we resume recording!

    Thanks!

  • Auditions are closed!

Hey, folks! Well, we've reached the end of our preliminary audition phase and it couldn't have been more of a rewarding experience! Over the sixteen days we had the Casting Call Club project open, we received 100 auditions from 24 people. With so much attention, love, and talent, the production team has a lot to look forward to and many hard decisions to make. For those who did not get in their auditions but submitted on Google Forms or vise versa, unfortunately, you cannot be considered. The completion of both parts was a requirement for consideration. Check back later if/when we open up casting for Season 2! If you stumble upon this project later on and want to get in the know about product updates, possible casting opportunities, and future projects, be sure to message me privately here on CCC. From now on, however (until we open casting for Season 2), all communication will take place on the Discord channel. Thank you again for your participation and interest! This will be a fantastic project! Ever forward, David.
  • Changes to Audition & Callbacks Deadlines + Information on Callbacks

Howdy, folks! I wanted to update you now that I have more complete information. Unfortunately, it seems that I'll be out of town longer than I had anticipated. Because of this, the end date for auditions has changed to June 14th and the end date for callbacks has changed to June 18th. These changes give us the upcoming weekend to allow for last-minute auditions and also a week (instead of three days) to find the best places for everybody who has auditioned. There's still a lot going on behind the scenes. We're furiously defending our favorite auditions behind closed doors because y'all bring such incredible talent to this passion project. We're also preparing material that will (hopefully) make the callback process all the more useful and entertaining to those taking part. The list of callback activities includes, but is not limited to: > Pronunciation of French words (this is more than likely going to be conducted by Ashley, our in-house French Canadian). > Pronunciation of the character names (Ashley will have a video that you will be able to reference, but you may be asked at any time during the week to enter a VC and recite them without reference). > Demoing scenes from the episode scripts > Demoing character interactions through the use of "non-canonical" exchanges > Demoing audition lines in various tones, moods, etc. > Singing in French (as of now, this is only necessary for Prouvaire callbacks, but all are welcome to try). > Charades-like mini-activities like, "You're Grantaire. Sell me this pencil! Go!" Many of you may not have the tightest grasp of the personality of these characters and that's okay. We understood that would be likely when we set out to cast for this production, so don't be afraid if you're unsure how a character might behave in certain exchanges or something feels off. We can provide you background on characters, our tentative plans for character arcs inside of the audio drama, etc., to help you through the callbacks process.
  • One Week Left

Howdy, folks! It's been an amazing experience seeing the amount of interaction that this casting call has garnered in just a week! Thank you to all of you who have submitted audition pieces and have been juggling our requests. It helps our confidence as we're wading our way through finding the best fits for the characters. You might have noticed that Ashley, our artistic director and in-house Enjolras, has also been responding to your auditions. She's been a great help as I've been bouncing between other obligations. Please make sure that you are filling out the Google Form as you're going through auditions or we cannot consider you for roles. Likewise, keep an eye out for an invitation to the Discord channel from Ashley (Ashley 阿守礼 Barnes#2520) as she's been handling invites. Our audition deadline is still June 11th, but we will be sure to let you know if anything changes before then. We'll hopefully provide information on callbacks within the next few days. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out here or over Discord and we'll respond to you promptly.

Grantaire

Grantaire is the infamous skeptic. He often mocks and berates the trivialities of Enjolras's endeavor but deeply respects his persistence. He is unintentionally a comic soul, bereft with much cynicism that alights laughter from those who are not Combeferre or Enjolras, the latter of whom seems to despise his presence almost entirely. In his stoic and philosophically withdrawn nature, Grantaire serves as the whetstone to the ideals of Les Amis de l'ABC.

  • (humorously) It's easy to find good booze--but a good box to die in? That is much harder to find.

  • (bitter) After all, what use is a song but for the tittle-tattle of angels?

  • (almost tragically proud) I sketched it myself. This is a fictional character. There is no sister. There is no saint in heaven. There is no mission. There are only two poor fools who will now support yours, Enjolras.

Bahorel

Bahorel is described as a "good-natured mortal, who kept bad company." He embodies the more substantive heroic virtues such as bravery and loyalty but is misguided in his pursuits of earthly pleasures. He's unwaveringly prodigal in his spending, lavishes his natural connection with women, and stands ready to commit to physical solutions to problems. Although he does not carry the same fascination with proper education as the others (he indefinitely avoids the completion of his law degree), he is no fool and understands the purity of good morals, and has a willingness to support them fiercely.

  • Ladies and gentlemen, I must apologize on behalf of this man for making such a commotion. You see, however, it is wholly necessary that you are brought into the fray at this moment, for he has committed a deplorable act far worse than a minor disruption of your meals.

  • Oh, ho! So close! No, really! That was quite the attempt. In fact, I can feel the phantom sting on my jaw here. Now, where was I?

  • (tenderly) Mademoiselle, I know that you have already suffered enough, but could I ask that you confirm, for me, the degeneracy of this man?

Role assigned to: AndrewSengVO

Combeferre represents the philosophy of the Les Amis de l'ABC. He is a medical student in his last year and often serves as Enjolras's confidant, providing sensibility and humanity to his leader and close friend. He has little patience for patronizing but appreciates his friends without faltering. He is rational, often the one to guide his friends away from trouble instead of towards it, and unwaveringly loyal to Enjolras and to the good of his country. He is carefully spoken, serious, and respectable.

  • (frustrated)

Courfeyrac, I appreciate your insistence but I cannot be sure if I am constantly distracted by your truly profound questioning.

  • (tenderly)

There’s no guarantee that she would have received it before your arrival. Besides, it will be, for her, a very pleasant and welcome surprise.

  • (defeated)

And I hope you will be mindful of your timing when you go about collecting your share tomorrow.

Courfeyrac is the beating heart of the Les Amis de l'ABC, providing it warmth, youthfulness, and love. He rears against the privilege thrust towards him by his parents and wishes to see a place in society made up of his own blood, sweat, and tears. That does not distract him from the vices of life, such as spirits, food, and women. He shares in the companionship of fellow troublemakers like Bahorel and Jehan but is devoted to the mission of Enjolras and Combeferre, his true family.

  • (playfully)

I will not risk offending your intelligence by feigning modesty, nor will I bore you by lingering on the magnitude of my presence. Where is Apollo? Has my absence left me forsaken in the eyes of our immortal fellow?

  • (with hints of shame)

They offered me one of the cotton plantations. They told me I could live in a mansion. I would have had anything I desired. I would have been comfortable. I would have had chefs to cook for me and maids to clean for me.

  • (drunk)

Look, ‘Ferre! Enjolras did his own soul-feeding while he was away! Ah, his friend looks inviting! In fact, Monsieur, you look like a character straight from one of the classics!

Jean Prouvaire is the champion of poetry and pastimes, finding enjoyment in the simplistic elements of life. If Courfeyrac is emotional in heart, Jehan is emotional in the soul, and that yields an aura of friendship with humanity. Although not nearly as prominently spoken in the way that Enjolras is, Jehan is intensely well-studied. He sports interest in several languages, cultures, religions, and the like. This is colorized by his prominent French accent, a characteristic he shares with Feuilly. He enjoys, primarily, contemplative conversation and does not stray from sensitive topics. He unites his brothers in humanity through the promotion of these virtues of well-being and his brothers cherish him for it.

  • Precisely! This pristine silence is always shattered at the peak of the day, when the busybodies come from their offices and scurry around, looking for something to satisfy their insatiable appetites, when, if they were only to stop and take in the love that the earth has to give, they would feel truly satisfied.

  • Yes, I shall let you alone then. I, ah, will still be in the gardens, so do not be alarmed if you catch sight of me around or hear me reciting poetry or song. I will be sure to keep my distance.

  • I have read of an American fellow, who has shared that, “It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.”

Role assigned to: Gwenith Knight

Bossuet is described as a "gay but unlucky fellow" by Hugo. He struggles often to find a basis for accomplishments and went bald by twenty-five. He possesses some degree of wit and an abundance of good cheer in spite of his circumstances and bears the terrible triteness of being with his arms thrown over the shoulder of adversity as if it were an old friend. Bossuet, too, pursued the trappings of a law degree but met the same level of success as Bahorel. He is passionately attached to both Joly and Musichetta.

  • (matter-of-fact)

Joly has very strong opinions about the current state of medicine in the country.

  • (laughing)

Yes, It wouldn’t be very helpful to Madame Hucheloup if we made our place of gathering in the kitchen of her restaurant.

  • (pained)

Joly is a medical student, like Combeferre, but is far more eccentric. Often overly concerned with the health of himself and his environment, he exercises a bit of obsession. That does not stop him from being a good sport amongst friends. He is one-third of the trifecta that is himself, Bosseut, and Musichetta. He shares a gaiety in spirit but not a brashness had by Courfeyrac or Bahorel. This antithesis makes him more devout and agreeable to simple principles, such as those held and promoted by Combeferre.

  • (serious)

I heard the gunshot and saw the way everyone reacted from my table and knew something was wrong.

  • (defensive)

I think having two medical students can serve as a suitable alternative to a doctor in this case.

  • (amused)

It just so happens that “current affairs” were the topic of discussion while Bossuet and I shared our meal earlier.

Feuilly stands out amongst the others as a working-class man. He does not overwhelm himself with political discourse nor does he squander educational and economic opportunities, instead he works honestly. He is a fan-maker by trade who seeks to educate himself by any means necessary, to honor the mission of his parents who left him orphaned. Feuilly has a generous heart and an immense range of affections. He feels deeply for the sorrow of his country and wishes to bear upon himself some level of struggle to help deliver the world. He carries a prominent accent, like Jehan, and struggles even with his native language. He is concise but meaningful. He is quiet but determined.

  • I came over here because you are in terrible danger. Your friend here, he is from the newspaper?

  • Messieurs, the Musain is closer. We can take him into the kitchen and treat him there. Madame Hucheloup will not mind, and she might even help us.

  • It's the equipment and the cooking. It’s like this most of the day, but there is a storage room in the back that could be much more accommodating than this.

A tragically stubborn girl who suffers under the scrutiny of her parents, particularly of her father. She has the resolve to outlast the coldest of winters and a heart that could survive even the deepest wounds. She is resourceful, cunning, and agile. She does not share the same enthusiasm as the others in regards to issues of the state for her own life has been little more than an inescapable tragedy. Her role in the first season is minuscule but she will no doubt play a larger role in future seasons.

  • And I know how to write, too! Do you want to see? Look here, I’m going to write a word to show you. There are no faults of orthography. You can look. We have received an education, my sister and I. We have not always been as we are now. We were not made!

  • Do you know what, Monsieur Marius? It puzzled me because you entered that garden; it was stupid because it was I who showed you that house; and then, I ought to have said to myself that a young man like you— You thought me ugly, didn’t you?

  • That isn’t an excuse for making a scene in public. Maybe that'll teach you something about being more mindful of your surroundings.

We're looking for someone with experience developing Sound Design and Audio Mixing within the setting of podcasts and audio drama. This mostly focuses on post-production tasks, such as taking the recording dialogue, cleaning it, and stringing it together with relevant sound effects and music. This is a role in which you'll get direct access to communication with the production team. That being said, we've love to get in touch with potential candidates and discuss what they usually expect from roles like that so we can adapt accordingly.

Madame Hucheloup is a homely creature, a widow and sole proprietor of the Café Musain. Easily-spoken and motherly, she appreciates the divine pursuits of young men and strives to encourage those in poverty through her efforts. In fact, she had provided many of Feuilly's work opportunities to him when he first started working for her. She, then, serves a cursory yet intimate role amongst the others, doing her best to ensure their safety. She happened to be good friends with Courfeyrac's aunt.

  • Yes. It’s a noble thing, and a needed one, too, a group pursuing goodness for us.

  • Okay, okay. You might be correct. Feuilly, you have told them already about the backroom, haven’t you?

  • (quickly)

Oh, I... I must tend to the customers out front. I hope you get better.
