The Changers: Xonerate Defense - The Animation

Project Overview

OVERVIEW

The Changers: Xonerate Defense is a Webtoon Canvas series created by yours truly about the adventures of a young vigilante superhero team fighting to survive in a city overridden with high-tech supervillains and criminals, while they eventually learn about the society of heroes that surround them. Armed with the matter-morphing powers of Xonerate, they will keep their oath to protect one another and become the greatest heroes ever. The point of this Casting Call is to gather talent that will be willing to participate in short animated videos; either adaptations of the comic or completely new, canon sketches. It is highly recommended that you read the first few chapters of the webcomic first before auditioning so that you have a better idea of the characters and world.

GOALS

The adventures of The Changers would be an attempt to revive the semi-serial format of superhero action cartoons prominent from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s. Long and ongoing story arcs that are usually divided into seasons and segmented between filler or establishing episodes. Storytelling elements are inspired by superhero comic books published by studios such as DC, Marvel and Image, but the series also heavily incorporates components from TV animation. Old-School toy juggernauts like Transformers, Power Rangers and Turtles. Newer age cultural phenomena like Avatar, Ben 10 and Teen Titans. Modern gems like She-Ra, Steven Universe and Seis Manos. Screenwriting and dialogue structure can best be compared to Dwayne McDuffie's, Matt Wayne's, Bruce Timm's or Charlotte Fullerton's works while also sometimes showcasing a sense of humor something akin to that of Regular Show by J.G. Quintel.

ART STYLE

Aesthetically, Xonerate Defense presents itself as a very stylistic and edgy show. Keeping in line with the fundamental principles of character design, each character carries their own recognizable shape that's presented effortlessly by the geometric and sharp linework akin to shows like Rise of the TMNT and Lego Monkie Kid. As you will see later on, characters boast a vibrant and distinct color palate so that  even in a crowd, they'd stand out. The series won't be afraid to change its color palate a bit, maybe even completely, when it's tonally called for. The show's overall look and vibe can also be compared to 2D fighting games, most notably 1999's Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. Changers uniquely blends many elements from all over nerd and animation culture.

NEW BEGINNINGS

Long time fans may know that my end goal is to turn this webcomic into an animated series that airs on a streaming service like Netflix or HBO Max, maybe even a platform of my own. Back in 2018 I created a set of Pilot episodes that introduce the world and main characters, and a Trailer for the follow-up to the Pilot, titled Hydroflow. However, those plans were not seen through and the project was cancelled. I was not experienced enough with my art and management skills to acquire talent and keep it, and The Changers IP’s copyright ownership was not solidified to be in my hands. That set of Pilot-related videos is no longer canon to The Changers mythos. But after a couple years, I believed I have gained a bit more of the intel and skill needed to create something tangible. You can check out more of my sample work on my Twitter account and YouTube channel.

EXPECTATIONS

This is a completely VOLUNTARY, UNPAID project. However, if you wish to apply, you must have some sort of commitment to it. It's more of an on-and off job, and you may only need to record upwards of 5-15 lines for each animated video, depending on the characters and context, of course. Depending on how things go, paid roles will open, but it's not a possibility at this moment. As usual, a clear, well-equalized mic is required.

THE CREATOR

NoxiMation: I'm a 17 year old self-taught artist and animator. My main fascinations are with comic books, 90s-2010s action cartoons and shounen anime. The Changers hopes to combine the aesthetics of all of these with other outside influences.

Latest Updates

  • The cast has been finalized! Thanks to everyone who auditioned!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKNJwd0yvzY
  • Recasts

Some characters will be recast due to a lack of response from the voice actors.
  • Update on Voice Acting decisions

I decided to push back my own deadline for making final voice actor decisions because trying to manage 18 people through e-mail at a time is nigh-impossible with my schedule. I'm now focused on deciding four roles at a time. This means I'm hoping to get Cheyne, Jay, Zaire and Ivy finalized by the 14th, and then continue with the next four characters afterward.
  • Slight Update!

As you can see, the project icon and some character icons/descriptions have changed. That's just because I wanted to update the project according to my ever-evolving creative vision. Nothing major, though, as the voice guides I included in my "Changers and their Voice Actors" video are still the same. With that being said, I'm finally deciding the voice roles and am sending out emails pertaining to a "Stage 2" of the audition process to the actors that have been selected . I can't fully judge the relation between voice and character with CCC's limited description and line space, so I'm giving the VAs a little bit of homework; a performance of two whole scenes of my making and/or choosing featuring the characters they auditioned for or characters similar to them. It'll make sense when you get it. These emails will be sent from 5/14/21 to 6/14/21 at the very latest.
  • Update on Voice Acting Decisions

I’m still light years away from getting this project on the air as a full animated series, but as mentioned in the project's attached video, I am working with voice actors, sound engineers and music composers to make micro-sized animated shorts and comic dubs to accommodate. Little did I suspect that I would get over 350 auditions for the 18 roles I had posted on the site. It’s been very hard choosing who I think is the perfect fit for each character, as I’m going through this selection process very strictly and rigorously. With that being said, I still need a bit more time to truly select who I see fit to voice these characters. With the voice acting in Pilot and Hydroflow, I basically just picked whoever was available because I was so glad to even have 6 or 7 people auditioning for one of my projects. But the years have gone by and I’ve evolved as an artist and as a manager. So, even if it may not seem like a big deal to others, I really want the quality in my project to stand out like a lantern in a dark room, and I want everyone on board with The Changers: Xonerate Defense to have an additional project to put on their resume with a grin of pride on their face. I'm also searching diligently on other sites to find talent I think would be the perfect fit for a project like this. With that being said, please allow just a little more time for this decision process. Thanks in advance.

Role assigned to: Dakota Lara

Cheyne is dubbed the Aqueous Ace and is one of the Core 4 Changers. He prefers brains over brawn and direction over diversion. He may come off as a little sarcastic and timid sometimes, but he has the chops needed for the job. Word of advice, however... don't piss him off.

Cheyne has a voice similar to Terry McGinnis from Batman Beyond with the pitch of Alan Albright from Ben 10: Alien Force.

  • Higo. Think of it like... an abbreviation. "The H is goin' on"?

  • Way to make a first impression. Why don't we try eating the table next time?

  • Never did I think there would be so much power within me, and now that I've seen it at work... I won't stop until it's completely my own.

Role assigned to: jva25

Jay is a fire-powered phlegmatic and the second member of the Core 4. She's very laid back, playful and fun to have as a conversation partner. Although, not many see her as a great role model.

Jay has a voice similar to Jen from MTV's cartoon Downtown but a little slower and slurred out.

  • Hey-a, it's Jay-a!

  • He's right, ya. We're the Xonerate Defense, not the Xonerate Defense for hire.

  • No use crying over spilled milk. It's not like The Kounts were gonna be worth a sweat.

Role assigned to: Nikko Abanilla

Zaire is a sanguine master of verdure and the third member of the Core 4. He was seemingly born with people skills, and is the best person on the team for negotiating. Though, he can be a bit lazy when it comes to keeping up relationships.

Zaire's voice is a bit of a mix of Jamie from Megas: XLR and Kevin Levin from the later Ben 10 series.

  • Sorry for the holdup, date night was just too fun.

  • Don't sweat it, G. We'd do it again for free in a heartbeat.

  • Hate to break it to ya, but robbing some mom-and-pop shop ain't gon fil your needs, bro.

Role assigned to: Janelia Hernandez

Royalty from beyond the cosmos and the last Core 4 member. Her choleric but naive nature creates turmoil, but her energy and drive makes up for it.

Her voice is best compared to Supergirl/Galatea from Justice League Unlimited, though she may pronounce some nouns incorrectly. This is in-character for her.

  • Hey, UGLY! I've got somethin' to tell ya!

  • We save your life, and nothing we game!? (Meant to be "gain", but she pronounces words incorrectly sometimes.)

  • You shouldn't talk of your leader so rigidly behind her back.

Landon James, otherwise known as The Timestopper, is one of the legendary heroes set to work under the Paragon Gene, a U.N. subsidiary that specializes in apprehending higher-tier supervillains. He's a bit rigid and standoffish, but behind his detached outer shell is an extraordinary mind and resolve.

His voice is comparable to George Newbern's Superman from Justice League Unlimited.

  • This is agent Landon Nathan James of the Paragon Gene. By administrative request, you are to come with me.

  • I don't have time to come up with a name for myself. Timestopper works just fine.

  • Work time, babe. Don't get lazy on me now.

Role assigned to: RingingSilence

Mira James is the wife of Landon. She's got more of a go-getter personality as opposed to Landon's stone-cold approach, and isn't afraid to hype herself up or joke around in battle.

Her voice is comparable to Hawkgirl from Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, and she has a slight Latin American accent.

  • The elusive Cosmic Spark of the Paragon Gene's arrived. The guys upstairs, they need to have a little talk with you.

  • You might want to quit while you're ahead! I can't control my man here for much longer.

  • Who in their right mind would apply to a superhero internship after being convicted of arson?

Blitzwolfer "Blizzy" Toma was a wanderer with a dark past, but after a visit to the Paragon Gene, he was given a new life. He works under one of the Gene's heroes, Mira James, as an intern and often has to settle with mundane tasks like sweeping the building floors. He's got the very useful power to control thermal energy around him.

Blizzy's voice can best be compared to Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100.

  • BLITZWOLFER TOMA, PROFESSIONAL 'VILLAIN EXCAVATOR' AT YOUR SERVICE! (sigh) How many takes left of this?

  • Hey, you live around here? I've gotta to find my way to Tenth Zone East before I get the boot.

  • Huh. No matter what, whatever's behind me just doesn't seem to want to let go.

Tavollus Xlander is the hereditary heir to the Xlandrian throne and the adult brother of Ivy. He was banished from his world for being much to liberal in his war efforts. Who knows what he's planning now?

X.King's voice is comparable to that of Darkseid from the DC Animated Universe.

  • The power of hundreds of worlds over flows through me like a river!

  • You have fallen before my superiority, and yet you rise again. Valiant, admirable, but... woefully unacceptable.

  • The weight of treason has no effect on me; once before, but not now.

Reesho the Vassal is X.King's royal attendant and partner-in-crime. He's much older, wiser and is the voice of reason to Tavollus's rage.

Reesho's voice is comparable to the dog Hokuto from the Beyblade Metal Saga. He has a filter put over his voice, but it's not necessary to implement that in your audition. Voice effects will be added in post.

  • My apologies, Council. We are on a desperate mission to retrieve General Tavollus and will return him promptly.

  • General Tavollus, you must have thought about setting up a romantic life for yourself by now.

  • Protecting my pupil is my immediate priority. Stand against me and perish at your will!

Amanda is a supporting villain that will be a threat to The Changers, specifically Cheyne. After all, she was the girl hunting him down in his dream. She has a voice type similar to Ryuko of Kill la Kill, full of lunacy and sadism akin to Broly from DBZ.

  • I'd hope it's in your best interest not to cross me. I'd have to draw out your suffering.

  • Maybe someone else would like your head on their wall, but I'd rather just be done with it.

An intelligent but aggressive technopath who will stop at nothing to defeat The Changers no matter how many times he is put down.

Tsuki has a voice comparable to Renji from the popular anime Bleach.

  • You Changers will rule the day you stepped foot into my damn city!

  • Move an inch and I'll wipe the floor!

  • You did well enough. I built you for a purpose, and you were able to fulfill that purpose. The quality of your life is an extraneous factor.

The tough-as-nails leader of the Metal Faces gang. She hosts a superpowered fight club beneath the streets of Kroy and is fairly witty. Her swiftness and experience in martial arts makes her a threat to even people with superpowers.

Her voice can be compared to Black Canary's from Justice League Unlimited.

  • I promise, I'll tell you when we get there. If you whine, I'll drive slower.

  • I've got a lead on a new gig. Keep watch of the Club while I'm out.

  • Save it. The only way you can get my respect is through traded fists.

Haruki "Haru" Hagane is one of the generals of the Metal Face gang. She's a young martial artist with a cocky and arrogant personality. She starts off quiet near the start of battles, but she gradually shows more of her personality. Rescued by Eva from a deadly martial arts cult in Japan, she owes her life to her. After immigrating to the U.S., she made herself at home rather quickly and developed a taste in American culture. It's very likely you'd see her around with Kuraw, seeing as they're dating.

Voice is comparable to Chiyun Li from the Beyblade Metal Saga.

  • The serenity of the heavens has taken home in my heart. I'll attain victory with a calm mind.

  • I'll take you down where you stand if you refuse to give up!

  • Come on, come on! You won't be beating me anytime soon with such telegraphy!

Kuraw is another general of The Metal Faces gang. She takes a delight in fighting using her grappling techniques, but also loves pranking her friends and is a friendly type of competitive. A Wildlife Preservation major at her university, she chooses to represent her favorite animal, the Northwest African Cheetah, on the battlefield under the name Kuraw. Her voice is the opposite of her stature, being peaceful and serene. It's not rare that she'd be tagging along with Haru, seeing as they're an item.

Compare voice to Garnet from Steven Universe.

  • I've got optimism, but I'm also a realist. We ain't making it out of this without a couple scratches.

  • When you're brought up in a world where your peers are all better than you, you tend to grow faster.

  • Don't be late for our second round! I'll be building a coffin in the meantime.

Role assigned to: Kylie Rutzen

A Metal Face general and internet personality. While Sheel is overconfident in her fighting style, Guise is just overall conceited and a little bratty. She secretly hates Eva's position as leader of the gang, but will follow her orders for the time being, similar to Starscream's relationship to Megatron. Don't get it twisted; Ariel and Eva have been friends since high school, it's just that Guise is a bit of a control freak, even if she's only a Metal Face part-timer.

Compare voice to Bonnie from Kim Possible.

  • Girls, let's show this dork who's boss.

  • Sure, E. I'll protect the place like I own it! (...and with you out of the picture, I will.)

  • It seems like you need a reminder of who's telling you around. It's me, by the way.
