University listening test

University listening test

Project Overview

We are a university in Germany looking for voice actors to record short texts in English to be used in a listening test. They are scripted, but we'd like someone who can make them sound engagaing.

Can record in your own time.

Role 1: Approximately 500 words. Female lecturer (age approx 30+) giving a lecture/presentation on culture shock.

Role 2: Approximately 400 words. Parts of a dialogue between two people in a podcast debating a tax on foods high in sugar. Male role (age approx 30+).

Role 3: Approximately 400 words. Same text as in role 2. Parts of a dialogue between two people in a podcast debating a tax on foods high in sugar. Female role (age approx 30+).

Role 4: Approximately 250 words. A linguist speaking about how babies respond to the human voice. (male adult - Australian or New Zealand accent).

Our budget isn't super high (sadly), but we can offer €20 per actor for roles 1-3 and €15 for role 4.

We are a university in Germany looking for 3 voice actors to record short texts in English to be used in a listening test. They are scripted, but we'd like someone who can bring them alive somewhat as if they weren't entirely scripted (e.g. adding occasional natural fillers and intonation as if they are largely freely spoken). Any accent, also non-native accents as long as they are clear.

Can record in your own time.

This role would be for a text of approximately 500 words (approx 3 mins 30 seconds or so of recording). Female lecturer (age approx 30+) giving the opening to a lecture/presentation on culture shock. All that is needed is good audio quality and no background noise. We would like two recordings, once slightly faster and one slightly slower.

Example of text:

"Let’s begin with a key word that’s fundamental to human existence - adaptation. And cultural adaptation—the process of adjusting to a new culture—is one of the most complex and challenging forms of it. When people move to a new city or country, go on vacation, travel abroad, or study abroad, they often have to adapt to differences, whether that’s in how language is used, or the general customs or social norms there. And this process is challenging, resulting in what Canadian anthropologist Kalervo Oberg termed “culture shock”."

This role would be for one half of a dialogue in a podcast debate. The topic is the pros/cons of taxing products high in sugar. This half of the dialogue is approximately 400 words. Male role (age approx 30+). The dialogue is written in a way which doesn't require the text to be recorded with the other person. We will edit them together.

All that is needed is good audio quality and no background noise.

Example of text:

"I don’t dispute that some reductions in consumption can occur, but my concern is with the broader economic and social impact. A tax like this disproportionately affects lower-income households. Products with high amounts of added sugar tend to be some of cheapest, especially when compared to healthier alternatives like fresh fruit and vegetables, so, for people living paycheck to paycheck, it’s just a bigger burden. It shouldn’t just be about changing behavior; it’s more about making sure that change doesn’t unfairly target vulnerable people."

This role would be for one half of a dialogue in a podcast debate. The topic is the pros/cons of taxing products high in sugar. This half of the dialogue is approximately 400 words. Female role (age approx 30+) and this person is also the host of the podcast (but doesn't need to be over the top as it is more "intellectual" in style. The dialogue is written in a way which doesn't require the text to be recorded with the other person. We will edit them together.

All that is needed is good audio quality and no background noise.

Example of text:

"But there are actually clear examples of where the tax has worked. Take Mexico, for example. After implementing a sugar tax, sugary drink consumption dropped by 7.6% in the first year alone! And more importantly though, those from lower-income households, who are often most affected by diet-related diseases, reduced their consumption even more than that. It’s a tool that can make a real difference, especially for this income group and when paired with other health initiatives."

This role would be for a text of approximately 250 words about how babies respond to the human voice. Male voice with any kind of Australian or New Zealand accent. All that is needed is good audio quality and no background noise.

This is a shorter text, so we can offer €15.

Example of text:

"Long before they can actually speak, babies pay special attention to what’s said around them. We know this because, within the first month of their lives, babies' responses to the human voice will be different from their responses to other sorts of sounds. They’ll stop crying when they hear a person talking, but not if they hear a bell or a rattle. At first though, the sounds that an infant notices might be only those words that are emphasized the most."
