UNEXAMPLED (MMD fantasy animated series)
Project Overview
This Casting Call was originally uploaded by the user AkumaKay, but we reuploaded it here due to account issues. Several of the characters are already cast, but there are still plenty left.
What is UNEXAMPLED?
UNEXAMPLED is an ambitious animation series made entirely with MMD. Our goal is to use the simplistic animation style to tell a fun, compelling and emotional story, while still creating stunning visuals. It’s a mash-up of genres, from fantasy, action and adventure to drama, thriller and even a little horror, with snarky dialogue, nail-biting suspense and epic action scenes!
However, the real stars of UNEXAMPLED are the characters. Each one of them is unique, with a large set of strengths and weaknesses, virtues and flaws. Each relationship formed over the course of the series is unique too, as the characters influence and change one another.
The first episode has already been uploaded onto YouTube, but it’s not an accurate depiction of what the rest of the series will be, except in terms of animation style. We made some radical changes to plot, characters and writing since then, and a (truly amazing) composer has also joined the project, so the following episodes will be much better.
Where is it set?
It’s set in a magical medieval world where the classic fantasy creatures like elves and orcs are all but extinct, decimated by past wars as well as humans. Now, the dominant supernatural species are abnormals, human-like beings with magical powers, and demons, who transform into mindless monsters should they ever lose control over their emotions.
The lands are mostly rural, the population spread out over countless villages. There’s only one city known to the locals, simply called “the city” because there’s nothing else to compete with the name. That city is controlled by the royals, who are incredibly hateful towards anything supernatural and have set up a tight security around the city to make sure only mundane humans make it in. They’ve also been doing their best to exterminate what remains of elves, orcs, abnormals and demons for good. Any supernatural beings left are on the run, alone or in small groups, hunted by humans.
The tavern where the main plot kicks off is one of the few safe havens for abnormals and demons left.
What is the plot?
After being poisoned, lone abnormal Zero runs into the sisters Sora and Katie. He soon learns that his only hope of survival lies beyond the reach of his slowly deteriorating body. To save his life, the sisters decide to accompany him on the dangerous journey. They soon team up with abnormal hunter Kimi, and everything goes to hell from then on. Stalked by dangerous enemies and weakened by infighting among each other, the group faces challenges beyond their imagination, before discovering a conspiracy that threatens everyone they love. None will finish the journey unchanged. If they finish it at all…
Meanwhile, in the city, aspiring royal Narrako desperately tries to live up to his legacy. Convinced that a demon slipped by the supposedly impenetrable defenses, he starts investigating despite strict orders not to. He’s determined to prove himself to his father… and to protect his city from the threat of the monstrous abnormals and demons.
How long will the project last?
It’s hard to tell. Season 1 should be completed in more than year. About one year if we get enough animators together. But we’re planning on having 3 or 4 seasons, which will take quite some time themselves. The voice actors for this season however will only be needed in the beginning, at least until season 2 rolls around: You’ll receive the scripts for all the episodes at once, so you can work through them at your own pace and send in the lines once you’re finished. Once you finish the script, your work is done for this season.
Is there any payment?
No. This is a pure passion project, everyone involved is doing it solely for fun and out of passion for filmmaking, writing, animating, voice acting and composing.
Whom are we looking for?
Voice actors, animators with experience in MMD, sound designers

A villainous femme fatale, Rikaiu appears not to care about anyone but herself. Those around her are mere pawns to achieve her goal of collecting the mysterious sacred gems. She pretends to care for them just as much as she has to to keep them in line, and is cold and indifferent whenever she knows she can get away with it. She’s a master manipulator, using every tool she can (including, occasionally, seduction) to get what she wants.
However, later seasons will reveal that even to this seemingly flat, villainous character, there’s more than meets the eyes. She’s still evil, though.
Her voice is that of a grown, mature woman. Whenever her voice isn't sickly sweet with false kindness, she's full of scorn towards everything and everyone.
Shut it, Hisia! Now, Kan, dear, do you know where your playmate is?
*amused* My my! You're such a pretty girl. Now what might you be doing in these parts of the east? Haven't you heard of the demons lurking around this area?
How many times do I have to apologize? *her voice gets slightly seductive* Is there any way I can… make up for it?
Mild-mannered, quiet and level-headed, Idle is Narrako’s best friend and supports him whenever he can. He serves as a counterpoint to Narrako’s impulsiveness.
His voice is calm and genuinely friendly.
Those rumors were openly dismissed by your father. You would do well not to oppose him.
Hey, watch the way you talk to your commander, soldier!
You know that you'll get in serious trouble if he finds out, right? You may be degraded, or even kicked out of the army for good.
Chiara is the head of a brothel in the city. Once Narrako’s investigations lead them there, she becomes one of the main suspects of being a serial killer - and a demon. If she wants to clear her name, she has to catch the true killer…
As it befits a prostitute, her voice is mature and often seductive. However, she’s far more than just her profession, and soon reveals a bright and intelligent mind.
*seductively* Hello dear, is there anything I can do for you?
*serious* I think we both know what’s actually going on. You’re not simply here so I can “help you with your investigation.” Admit it, I’m one of the suspects too.
*sincerely* My girls…. They would never do such a thing.. I know what we are, we’re not exactly the most trustworthy. But they aren't killers. This must be some kind of mistake.
The shortest way to describe her: She is evil. Like Chiara, she is a prostitute, but she’s also a demon in disguise whose hobby is to murder some of the men she sleeps with. To the outside world, she’s a simple “bad girl”-type call girl, but in the dark, she takes the “bad girl”-persona a bit too far.
Like the other girls she speaks seductively, but her voice takes a far more innocent tone, as if she didn't know what she's doing. When she drops the facade, the innocence goes away completely and she becomes completely gleeful and evil.
*seductively* First time here? You’ll need someone experienced to show you around, then. Luckily for you… I’m the most experienced here.
*innocently* Is there anything I can do for you? Anything at all?
*mock innocent and scornful* Are you so eager to get the poor, little girl killed? Hasn’t she suffered enough already?
Katie’s and Sora’s mother, she runs one of the few taverns that welcomes supernatural beings. She’s kind and loving towards Sora, if a bit overprotective.
She plays a small role in this season, but gets more important later on.
Her voice is soft, sweet, and motherly.
Are you okay? You’ve been so… quiet lately.
*angry* You’re not getting out there again. This is final!
*sad* Do you really have to leave? You could stay here a bit longer if you wanted to.
A flamboyant gentleman, Hisia is the husband of Rikaiu and adoptive father of Kan. However, he’s nowhere near as evil as those two: He hides a great deal of insecurity and dependence, being completely unable to properly take care of himself, which is why he convinces himself that he loves them. He’s submissive to the whims of both Rikaiu and Kan - a ten-year-old girl, mind you - as they mastered the admittedly not very difficult art of manipulating him with a few well-chosen words. When they’re off committing unspeakable evils, he stands aside and watches in horror.
Not that he’s all too morally sound himself. His years with his family have somewhat hardened him towards the suffering of others, and he never does anything but very superficial attempts to prevent the others from doing what they do.
As with May, his role in this season is quite minor, but he becomes very important later on, and receives thorough development.
His voice is snobby, well enunciated, raspy, polite. His character was heavily inspired by Reaver from Fable, for example in this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcQgK32gAgk
Look Kan, I think you are going to have to let this one go. We can't keep chasing after your toys.
Remember, the kid is watching. Don’t go too far.
I just... she creeps me out, okay? I know it's a horrible thing of a father to say, even if she's not ours by blood, but... sometimes, I can't even believe this is the child we raised.
A modest, yet smart and open-minded villager. Unlike a great deal of her kind, she doesn’t discriminate against fantasy beings, and helps them whenever she can.
Her voice resembles an angel's, soft and sweet.
I'm not one of the royals. I won't hurt you. I’m here to help you.
Let's hurry up. The sooner you can walk, the sooner we can both get out of here.
*a little sad* You know you can leave whenever you want to.
They’re all kinds of people, mostly supernatural, but some human, that visit May’s tavern. They’re there mainly for background noise, but some get a few onscreen lines, too.
Their voices can be anything, really. Young and old, male and female, well-educated and raunchy.
How’s yer wife? Heard she put herself in trouble.
My daughter used to be like that. A real fighter, she was!
Don’t worry, they’ll come back in time for dinner!
The foot soldiers of the royals. Some of them are professional and take their job very seriously, while others are way more relaxed and talk slang. In either case, the voice has to match the personality: Tidy, calm and professional in the first case, and rowdy and relaxed in the latter. Age can vary.
*professionally* Show me your token, please. If you don’t have on yet, please get in line for inspection.
*relaxed* Don’t let abnormal blood bother ye. It’s like a pig, and ye don’t mind seeing pig guts, do ye?
*agressive* Get out of my way, peasant!
She’s only seen as a terrified woman before being executed by the royals.
This character doesn't require a specific voice. Just skill.
No… stay away from me… STAY AWAY FROM ME!
*gasps upon being stabbed in the chest*
A poor fellow murdered by Disgorda after having been seduced by her.
This character doesn't require a specific voice. Just skill.
I still can’t believe we’re doing this. I always thought I didn’t stand a chance…
*gurgling after being stabbed repeatedly and having a knife twisting in his body*
A nice guy who doesn’t get much to do. He’s the friend of Disgorda’s first victim. He’s seen lighthearted in his first scene and utterly depressed in the second one after witnessing his friend’s death. His third line takes place during his final appearance, wherein he’s utterly terrified.
This character doesn't require a specific voice. Just skill.
Hey, don’t have too much fun without me, will ya?
He’s gone… yesterday he was right here, and now… he’s gone.
No… no, stay away from me, don’t touch me, DON’T TOUCH ME!
Another one of Disgorda’s nameless on screen victims. Despite his minute role, his one appearance has quite a big effect on the plot.
This character doesn't require a specific voice. Just skill.
Thank you for coming. I… I didn’t think you’d show up.
*gurgling with a knife sticking in his throat*
Comically ineffectual bandits that try robbing the protagonists, but don’t manage to do anything but amusing them. Three people will be cast for this role.
A good reference are Ginta and Hakkaku from Inuyasha. They speak in a rural, would-be evil manner, but end up sounding quite silly and completely non-threatening.
Give us all ye got, or we slit yer friend’s throat!
Shut up, you idiot! Stop giving everything away!
Yeah, we have chicken. So what, yer not gettin’ any of it, ‘cuz… ‘cuz you’ll give us YER stuff!
We need a talented individual who can find the right sound effects for everything, from walking to background noise to spellcasting to fight scenes, and who can make them feel natural. Please send us an example of a work you’ve done in your audition.
