UNDERSTAGE: The Undertale Musical (act 1)

Project Overview

SOME OPEN ROLES, WHEN CAST, MAY NOT GET ACTIVE WORK IMMEDIATELY**: THIS IS A LONG-TERM PROJECT AND ITS SCRIPT IS IN A PROCESS OF RE-EVALUATION AND REWORKING.

Welcome! Deppy here, and I’d like to talk to you a little about my project called UNDERSTAGE. (Not to be confused with the movie set AU, by the name of "Understage", which i found by pure coincidence. I kept this name for the musical because it's easier than saying "Deppy G's Undertale Stage Musical" every time.)

Writing and composing for an UNDERTALE musical have been being created by me for some time now, and I decided to open a casting call to start having roles filled, songs sung and passages read. The plan is to have the songs and readings posted to YouTube, possibly with storyboards / animation to make for mock performances.

Now, someday I do plan on having this Actually be put on a stage, probably for fun or for a YouTube video since it's based on someone else's property. But for now, I'd love to start getting voiced demos in place to really get the feel for how it'll be for real!

I’m aware that a YouTube channel by the name of Man on the Internet has already created a musical version of this game, and despite being a big fan of it, I always have, and still do feel, that it would be impractical to put that four-hour performance on a real stage, seeing as there are aspects of performance and storytelling that, in my own opinion, would make it unsuitable for a real stage.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR:

- ARTISTS / ANIMATORS FOR FUTURE PROMOTIONAL CONTENT / VIRTUAL SHOW!

- ORCHESTRATORS ABLE TO MAKE GOOD-SOUNDING MOCKUPS

- Capable singers who are also capable actors

- Proper microphone quality

- willingness to stay on board and work closely with the cast until the project's completion (in other words, commitment to seeing it through)

extensive knowledge of the actual Undertale franchise is not necessary, but would come in handy when it comes to characterization. I'd love to see outside takes on these characters, though, so all are absolutely welcome to audition!

  • Act 1 And Trailer Progress

    We've been reworking the first act before beginning work on the second. Currently, we're still looking for artists to help us, but 99% of the voice acting roles have been filled.   • Animators and artists wanted!

    We've officially opened up the space for aspiring animators and artists to come help us! Of course, this wouldn't be paid work as we're fans creating a passion project based on Toby Fox's masterpiece, but this will help us get closer to our ultimate goal much faster!   • New roles

    We've started to open new roles! Check back every so often if you're interested in auditioning for characters that haven't appeared yet. Feel free to ask directly to know if any specific characters will be a part of the show, because not all of the minor characters stayed! The new roles that are currently opening, however, are the most long-term above the ones that have already been cast or that had been open originally. This is because not all of the script parts and musical numbers have been written/orchestrated, therefore the actors that are to be cast for these new roles will not get much work to do right away, but rather when their characters are fully written into the script. Thank you for all of your support, let's continue to make this show the best it can be!

    Thank you so much to all of those who have been following and auditioning so far, I've gotten more skilled and professional singers than I could have ever expected. We're aiming to give the show a simple but fully animated "showing", simulating a live performance down to stage / set design and coreography! If you want to give animating for us a shot, we'd be happy to take auditions for this as well!

(This would be animated as if it were being recorded inside an actual theater on opening day)

It is likely that we will be taking on as few animators as necessary for the sake of consistency.

Artists, however, will be in charge of drawing things such as concept arts, costume models and posters! Technically I could take care of the still imagery myself, but it takes a LOT longer for me to produce quality digital art due to a lack of technological resources.

Dogamy is the partner of Dogaressa, a stocky axe-wielding royal guard of a dog. He, much like his partner, can only rely on his sense of smell, however, making it a simple matter to trick him.

In this adaptation, Snowdrake is a youngster who usually hangs out in Snowdin with his friends, Ice Cap and the Monster Kid. He's got a bit of a bossy attitude and the others generally accept him as the leader of their friend trio. He's never up to talk about his emotions or his personal life with them, however, which always makes him seem distant.

  • Now. We’re all here, so let’s get the news through.

    First off, there’s a human in the Underground! And guess what? Undyne’s dispatched a larger Royal Guard team to patrol Snowdin! These new knights? They're cool... and totally adorable!

    They're dogs. Puppies, all five of them! But since they're in the Guard, I'd assume they're tough!

  • No. Stop, stop talking! You two have no idea what you're going on about! It isn't the same, it's never going to be. You don't know what it's like, don't know what it's like to have lost someone-- to have lost a parent!

    Get away from me, leave me alone! I'm going home and I never want to talk to you again!

The fact my voice is the lowest in this ensemble trio means that I truly carry the chorus singing, because without a deep bass sound, no song can truly live up to its potential. I am quite important, but also humble, for I know that I could not make harmonies alone.

Dr. Alphys is the underground kingdom's royal scientist. She is a shy little dinosaur-like monster with an occasional stutter and love for human media, namely Anime. She shuts herself in her laboratory all of the time, not taking many visitors or calls, and especially not letters. Many attribute this to some sort of lack of caring or social prowess, but in reality she dares not show her face in public due to past mistakes which left her traumatized and shattered her self-image, causing her anxiety to skyrocket.

  • Oh. My god. I didn't expect you to show up so soon! I haven't showered, I'm barely dressed, it's all messy and...

    Um... h-hiya! I'm Dr. Aplhys, Asgore's royal scientist!
    B-b-but, ahhhh, i'm not one of the "bad guys"!

    Actually, since you stepped out of the ruins, I've been... um... "observing" your journey through my console. Your fights, your friendships, everything!
    I was originally going to stop you, but... watching someone on a screen really makes you root for them!

  • Actually, uhh, there's just one tiny issue.
    A long time ago, I built a robot named Mettaton. Originally, I created him as an entertainment robot.

    Uh, y'know, like a robotic TV star or something.

    Recently, I decided to make him more useful. Y'know, just some small practical adjustments. Like... u-um... like... anti... anti-human combat features??

    Of course, when I saw you coming I immediately decided... I-I had to remove those features!
    Unfortunately, I may have made a teensy mistake while doing so... And um... N-now...

    Now he's an unstoppable killing machine with a thirst for human blood??

    Ehehehe... eehe...eh....heh......

    But um. Hopefully we won't run into him!

Leader of the Royal Guard. The only Royal Guard member stationed in Waterfall because “she’s enough.”

King Asgore trained her personally after she challenged him to a fight as a child. She is hot headed, a little dense and very powerful, but extremely loyal to those she holds close.

  • So many years. Each human that ever fell down to this place ever since I became the head of the Guard all that time ago…

    Their souls collected for the greater good.

    And now this final seventh human is here, and with them, freedom is closer than ever!

Monster Kid (sometimes referred to in the show as Monty simply for some semblance of a proper name) is the youngest of the Snowdin trio. He sneaks out of his house to go see the Royal Guard in action, whom he's a fanatic for. He is likely Undyne (the leader of the guard)'s biggest fan, and follows the protagonists into Waterfall to be able to see her.

  • Y-yo, I'm here! Don't tell my parents I was here, I'm supposed to be doing my homework!

    Did you see Undyne? Yo. She's AMAZING! She's always beating up the bad guys... man, I wanna be just like her when I'm older!

In this adaptation, Doggo is the leader of a pack of dog Guards sent to catch Frisk in Snowdin. He has trouble seeing things around him if they're sitting too still, which makes it easy to sneak up on him. He is naturally jumpy because of this.

Asgore is the benevolent Monster king of the Underground. He is compassionate and understanding, however capable of forcing himself to resort to fighting if deemed necessary. He typically speaks in a rumbling soft voice, but is more than capable of raising it when extremely upset.

  • As for the newborn prince, Well, I’m sure we will be quite proud of him however he turns out to be. He has a lot of expectations on his little shoulders already, the Queen would hate to overwhelm him like this, barely even born.

In this adaptation, Gerson is an old monster wizard, who brings to the kingdom news of a prophecy foretelling the fate of the Underground. He is very wise but his age already seems to have started to catch up to him, making it difficult for him to carry his thoughts exceedingly far before forgetting what he was speaking of.

  • What exactly is dated to be, I am not sure. All I have been told by the ancestors was that... “An angel who has seen the surface will return, and the Underground will go empty.”

Flowey the Flower: the show's villain. A devilish little buttercup, toxic in more ways than one. His goal is to steal the protagonist's soul and use it to take over the Underground. He possesses a squeaky and/or high voice, but is capable of easily bursting into maniacal laughter and snapping to a guttural, menacing tone almost instantly.

A human child who appeared in the world of Monsters long before the protagonist, and met an unhappy fate.

They are more of a neutral character in this interpretation; not cruel, but not an exceptional person.

They don't remember much of their life initially and, throughout the show, must connect the pieces to find out how to free the benevolent Monsters from the Underground world they have been banished to.

    Well… yes, used to. The thing is… I died. And I seem to be back again, though I don’t understand why... I suddenly woke up to see you, fallen on the flowers, just like me when I fell into the Underground.

    You’re a human, right? Humans are very peculiar creatures: their soul holds more magical energy than they know what to do with. You mustn’t have heard… Humans forgot about their magical gift long ago, and I just have a feeling that it was the magic from your soul that brought me back.

A short skeleton full of love for puns and practical jokes, with an acute lack of motivation always labeled by others as “laziness.” He is a polar opposite to his brother, the tall and (overly) confident Papyrus.

A self-centered yet friendly skeleton with his heart set on becoming a member of the “Royal Guard.” He is no fan of his brother Sans's constant joking and lack of seriousness. With a high yet raspy voice, he enjoys cooking and using his signature laugh of "Nye-he-he" whenever possible.
