The Jazz Singer

The Jazz Singer

Project Overview

Hey, everyone! This is gonna be a casting call for an audio play remake of “The Jazz Singer”, widely considered to be the first feature film with sound. This will be my second audio play after the Equestria Girls drama “Spaced Out”. Now, for those of you who don’t know what “The Jazz Singer” is, allow me to give you all a history lesson.

Released in 1927, “The Jazz Singer”, based on Samson Raphaelson’s 1925 stage play of the same name, was directed by Alan Crosland and stars Al Jolson as the son of a Jewish cantor, played by Warner Oland, who desires to become a famous jazz singer, hence the title. A huge hit for Warner Bros., both critically and financially, it was the first motion picture with synchronized sound, which officially ended the silent film era and would forever change the landscape of Hollywood film-making. Since its release, it went on to spawn three remakes, which were released in 1952, 1959, and 1980, respectively, each one varying in success.

This new version of “The Jazz Singer” that I’m writing is pretty similar to the original, but has several obvious differences to make it stand out on its own instead of being a rehash. For one thing, unlike previous incarnations of the play, the title character is a woman, the main setting for the film is Atlantic City, New Jersey (which I've vacationed with my family two years before the pandemic hit), and in place of the conflict between a Jewish cantor and his son is a world-renowned violinist whose daughter is more interested in jazz music than playing the violin.

Before I close out, there are a few things you need to know:

  • Be sure to have a good quality microphone. Make sure that there is NO background noise when you record your lines. Also, when you're voicing Sarah Robin, be sure to have a really good singing voice.

  • Always have a Discord ID with you, that way we can keep in contact with each other.

  • Be sure to take your time with the lines you're recording. Feel free to take a break, take deep breaths, drink some water. You don't have to rush anything.

  • Just be yourself and have fun with these characters. We are allowed to have a good time.

Well, I think I’ve stalled out on this one long enough. Time to get some auditions in! The deadline for this project will be on September 13th, 2022. I’m totally looking forward to meeting you guys! Hope you’re all staying safe in these troubling times, and I hope to see you soon.

An eighteen-year-old teenager who is in a third-generation family of violinists, serving as the lead singer. She had no desire to perform at the family’s latest concert as she wanted to dedicate her entire life to jazz music under the stage name of Sarah Robin, both as a guitarist and a singer.

  • (upset; tears running down her face) I’m not Susan Rabinowitz anymore. I’m not gonna put up with this any longer. I’m my own person now, and from this moment forward, I go by Sarah Robin!

  • Dad, I can’t play the violin as well as Mom can. All I can do is sing.

  • (Sing a jazz song of your choice)

A part-time waiter at the Jolson Coffee Shop & Bistro who discovers Sarah on stage and meets her at the table where she writes her songs, later becoming her boyfriend.

  • I'm a waiter, all right? I don't need any of this nonsense from some old turkey like you!

  • I’m gonna be there for you, Sarah Robin. No matter what.

Sarah’s mother and the lead violinist of the family’s band. She grows concerned about Sarah wanting to be a big-time musician and insists on her performing at their latest concert, making her wishes a bit difficult to follow.

  • Us families have to stick together and make music, Susan, not to survive on their own and make atrocious noises.

  • Shut up! I’m banning this so-called jazz music from our household! You are to play the violin, Susan Rabinowitz, and that’s final!

  • You don’t have to apologize, dear. You were just trying to make us proud, and, to me, that’s the main reason why I’m proud of you. You’ve been wanting to chase after your dreams so bad that I keep forgetting why I gave birth to you. I gave birth to a smart, passionate, happy, beautiful baby girl and look at her now. She’s growing up. All these times, I’ve been pushing pressure on you to be like me, but then I realized something. You wanted to be your own self. And I couldn’t have been any more proud of you than I already am right now. I’m happy that you got that contract, sweetheart, and I’m just gonna say this: If you want to make the world a better place for us to live in, be who you are born to be. That’s what my mother taught me.

Sarah’s father and the backup violinist of the group. Unlike his wife, he is more supportive of Sarah’s dream of making it big in the music scene.

  • Susan, I know that Morrisville's your home. Hell, I love living here, too, and I do enjoy seeing my friends both in and outside work. But sometimes we have to make sacrifices for the greater good. It's hard, yes, but we have to go through these type of changes. Know what I'm saying? I mean, who knows? Maybe you'll get to make some new friends down there.

  • Uh, I'm familiar with his work. My daughter's interested. She hasn't listened to his music.4.

  • Stop it, Jennifer! I’m sick and tired of you crushing our daughter’s dreams!
