The Howling Silence (Horror Visual Novel)

The Howling Silence (Horror Visual Novel)

Project Overview

We're a passionate indie team diving headfirst into a spooky-themed game jam with a prize pool of $1,000 - $500, and we’re looking for a few brave souls to help us bring our chilling vision to life. The project? A psychological horror experience called The Howling Silence, set in a snowy, desolate mountain where fear has fangs and waits in the woods...

The story is about a girl trapped on a snowy mountain pass after a car crash. Sam, the main character, watches helplessly as her best friend disappears into the woods searching for help. Left alone, she starts experiencing things; shadows moving in the trees, whispers on the wind, and a creeping sense that she's not alone... and never was.

Inspired by atmospheric horror like Silent Hill, The Loup Garou, and The Long Dark, this story-driven game is focused on isolation, emotional storytelling, and the dread of the unseen.

We’re in search of unpaid collaborators (for now) with the potential for compensation if we win or generate sales post-jam. You'll be credited for your work, and we’re fully committed to keeping everyone in the loop and treated with respect. Let’s make something terrifyingly unforgettable together.

The game is mostly completely written; we're just looking for voice actors, an artist, and a musician. The project will 100% be completed by the deadline: September 30th. We have a short timeframe for casting since we have until September 30th to submit the game.

What you'll get if you work on this is full credits in-game (and in our jam submission), behind-the-scenes access during development, and a share of potential prize money and post-jam sales. Payment is not 100% guaranteed, so keep this in mind if you apply.

We have two completed projects available to play that showcase our storytelling. Shards of the Heart Demo & Shards of the Heart: Memories of Leandra

  • [nervous but trying to sound calm] Maybe following the shortcut the GPS gave us wasn't a good idea.

  • [finding the dead body of her closest friend, breaking down in tears and a panic] No, no, Kate. Not Kate.

  • [informative and intrigued] Most werewolf legends are about people being cursed. Bitten, transformed, or hunted. But these ones, this region specifically, talk about a guardian. Something that lived in the woods and protected travelers. Until it was forgotten. Then it changed.

  • [retelling of a story, starting confident then slowly breaking down emotionally] The Loup Garou was here before the cabins, before the church, before the mines dug in the mountain. They say it kept the balance, drove away the things that crept down from the peaks in winter, the ones that stole into homes and took children from their beds. It asked for little in return. Food left at the edge of the forest, fires lit on certain nights, songs sung in the old tongue so it would know it was still welcome. For years, we lived without fear. Crops grew, winters were kinder, and we were safe. But the people forgot, or maybe they stopped caring.

  • [mourning and scared] The Loup Garou bled for us, and we repaid it with silver and flame. The last time I saw it up close, it wasn’t in rage. It was in grief. It stood at the tree line, not crossing into the light of the village, watching us like strangers. I swear I saw its eyes shining from tears, reflecting the fire we lit to drive it away. It turned and vanished into the dark, and the mountain felt different after that.

  • [forceful] Don't pity it.

  • [suspicious] ...Who are you? How do we know you're not with it?

  • [resigned to their fate] We've been catching what we can, whatever comes close enough. A few rabbits, some birds. Not much, but enough.

  • [resentful and angry] It wants us dead and will kill us any chance it gets. We don't need to discuss it any further. If you don't believe in our ways and wish to befriend the monster, you're free to leave and do so.

  • [hopeless and bitter] Some of us have nowhere else to go. And some of us... remember the old ways. We tried to leave once.

  • [horrified and depressed] Ellen was the first to change. She slowed down and turned her head, like she was listening to someone whisper in her ear. None of us heard it, but her eyes caught the moonlight. Flat, glassy, like they weren’t hers anymore. When I grabbed her arm, it was cold, snow cold, like she’d been standing outside all night. She smiled, and her teeth looked like they’d been broken and regrown wrong. Sharp, jagged.

  • [matter of fact but depressed] We shot her in the head. The only way to stop it.

We're looking for a background and CG artist, no character sprites. The style is gritty, atmospheric, and moody. Think snowy forests, blood trails, cold breath, and that one tree that always looks like it’s watching you. We will need images of the Loup Garou, a terrifying werewolf creature that only shows up partially on screen. We have reference images to go off of. No artwork that contains AI. We’re going fully handmade to meet the jam's guidelines. We will be disqualified if we break the rules.

The style is ambient dread, soft piano keys echoing in the snow, distant howls, low rumbles that make your chest tight. We need at least 2–3 background tracks (menu, forest exploration, high-tension scenes). If you’ve got a catalog of existing horror assets, we’d love to hear them!
