The Bellow of Brittle Stars - Audio Drama
Project Overview
The Bellow of Brittle Stars is a deepsea/deepspace adventure about a team of grad students (early 20s) sent on a field study to a very unique excavation site: a large fossilized whale floating out in space. Several teams of researchers have come and gone, digging tunnels and taking samples back to the planet for further study, as well as studying the rock formation, skeletal structure, and strangely active ecosystem of wildlife that has come to exist on this carcass. Fish, crustaceans, jellyfish, and other beings that resemble sea creatures have been scavenging material from this corpse just like the humans have, but it's unclear what they're looking for. The team that our story follows is small, going with limited equipment basically just for the experience of it as they collect a few samples and take notes on what they see. They've been given only one important directive: a large deposit of a particularly interesting mineral was detected deeper into a cave farther towards the skull of upper torso of the whale, and there are a few drills and other tools left on the site to go retrieve it.
This story will be an audiodrama told in 28 episodes (~15min each), switching perspectives between the five members of the team. At the rate I'm going, the final story will be about 90k words. Once the roles are cast, I'll probably take a bit more time to work on the writing, and then record the first 4 episodes. All actors will be paid $100 regardless of what comes next, and then I'll launch a Kickstarter to raise some more money for the cast. 18k words is a lot, so I'd like for everyone to be compensated.
The characters are all fairly young (early 20s) and I've imagined them with Standard American accents but I'm open to others to an extent, so give me your take on it! You must have a fairly good microphone though (It's alright if it's not the best, as the characters are speaking through comms and I might end up putting a filter over everything), and just like, be an okay person. Thanks in advance!

Wow! With over 400 incredible auditions for this project, it'll take me a tic to get through them all, but I'm planning on coming to a decision this week. Thanks you all for reading my dumb words, you did such a good job! There was such a delightful range for all the characters, and unexpected takes that I really liked. Enough gushing; you'll hear the casting decisions this week. Make sure you've read the last update and the new description, because a lot of you auditioned early before I changed things and I want to make sure anyone I consider is still onboard. I still have to get some things in order and deal with other projects, so we won't really get going until probably October, but Episode 1 (or Episodes 1-4, depending on how I decide to break this up) is, for the most part, already written. I just need to alter it/them for audiodrama format. Even if you're not cast, I hope some of you still found the project interesting and will listen in. I think it's going to be a ton of fun.

I'm turning this into an audiodrama.
Important Update on this project: Due to a ton of time spent working on other projects recently and working on more projects for the future, the artist for the project has backed out. After some time thinking about it, I decided that instead of looking for another artist, I'm going to pivot this project pretty hard. So, here it is. "The Bellow of Brittle Stars" will no longer be a visual novel. I'm changing it to be an audiodrama. If I really think about it, it should have been one in the first place. What this means for you is that each actor will now also have to voice the previously unspoken description lines, so it's a significant increase in work (~18k words per person, probably). I'll have to take some time to research and rework the writing style to accommodate this, and the final project will end up being released in 15 minute episodes. The $300 price remains the same, dependant on the Kickstarter. I've cancelled the old one and I'll launch a new Kickstarter later in the year once I've prepared a bit more. The characters and how they'll sound remains the same, so your auditions are still valid. However, if this shift changes how you feel about this project (maybe the increased work no longer seems worth it, or you wanted to be in a VN) email me at [email protected] to let me know, and I'll remove you from consideration for the role. The deadline for auditions remains the same, and once I have a cast I'll get the first 4 episodes made before launching a new Kickstarter. Sorry for all the trouble, and thank you for all the wonderful auditions. -
Role Details Changed
Turns out some details of the characters didn't save when I made them, and as a result I was slightly confused when I got certain auditions. All the characters should sound fairly young, in their early twenties, and preferably have standard American accents. Specifically for Dmitri and Vern, feel free to reupload your audition if that changes how you want to tackle it.
A kind of neurotic, but mostly serious, girl. Her main goal is to take notes on the various types of fish and other sea creatures that are crawling and swimming all over this behemoth, as well as investigating the whale itself. She's very confident around other people, good at being charismatic and fun, but is also worried about the safety and security of the team, especially when she's not there to keep an eye on them. She's also very good at reading people. A North American Accent is preferred but I'm open to any you want to try as long as they're not too heavy.
"Is it alright for me to be wearing this? It doesn't have to be kept sterile, does it?"
[Try to keep it light-hearted, but she does really want to know if it's a problem.]
"And neither of you wanted to wait for us? What if there was something dangerous out there and you got into trouble?"
[Only a little bit scolding, more genuinely worried and confused about why they would leave.]
"You're the archaeologist here, Susie. Are you trying to say I shouldn't get emotionally invested in a fossil?"
[Joking and laughing a little as she says it.]
A talkative jokester in the company of other people, always ready to debate and argue with a smile on his face. Gets very excited about geology, especially about examining the rock material that has strangely formed on a giant whale skeleton. In private, however, he enjoys being away from the stress of other people, and shows himself to be very sensitive and innocent in certain situations. I'd like his voice to be pretty high energy. Despite the name, he's not actually Russian. I'd prefer a North American accent for him.
"I get it. You want him to be like a teacher, bringing you up to speed on all the things you need to know, but he can save that for the classroom in my opinion."
[Arguing, but with a smile on his face. He's understanding of something someone else just said.]
"Of course it is! I have to make my lab sound good, you know. We've got a few different projects going, and I'm the go-to guy for collecting samples."
[Chipper, like he's striking a pose and doing a sales pitch.]
"This creature must have collided with something and it bent part of this structure, seperating the rocks here. You can see it's wider up there than it is on the floor, and we're between bones so it's probably weaker..."
[Serious sort of analysis as he's looking around, almost talking to himself more than explaining to someone else.]
Impatient and antsy. Not always such a big fan of bureaucracy and proper procedure, and more interested in figuring things out on her own. She started getting interested in studying the inanimate remains of creatures and civilizations because of her skill at deducing things from small clues. Also a fan of just adventure and exploration, ready to immediately run off and find something cool.
"Save it for *what*? Where do you think we were? His living room? That was a classroom."
[Arguing and getting a bit upset. The last line is enunciated and emphasized.]
"Look, I don't envy the guy. Dr. Kohler was trying to impress his geology buddies and I would be too."
[Calming down. Imagine her crossing her arms and leaning back into her chair as she says this.]
"Fuck it and fuck you. I'm leaving."
[Sighing and saying this to someone through soundproof glass, so mostly mumbling to herself.]
A confidant and organized guy who is in charge of making sure all the tools and the suits and everything run smoothly. It's easy to irritate him, but for the most part he's open-minded about things. Spends a lot of time keeping track of things in his mind, but when a moment of action is needed he is ready to act without too much thought. He has a kind of low-energy voice but don't go too far and make him suave and sultry.
"Don't worry about it. It's fine. Just don't spill anything on it. *pause* It kind of gives you a killer android look. What'd'you think, Terry?"
[Amused, said with a smile and a bit of a laugh. ]
"I saw you waving at the ship or something, is that what you mean? You could've just been doing that! I need to know if the comms are working from your end and I'm kinda busy he-"
[He sounds frustrated and distracted, like someone's wasting his time while he's in the middle of something.]
"Looks like this is the right place. We should start digging."
[Sort of leaderly, but also like he's just listing off the next step in an agenda he keeps in his mind.]
A quiet girl that comes off as standoffish, but mostly because she's awkward. She acts determined in the face of danger, does things independantly without always communicating, and is ready to share a personal story if she finds it appropriate. Takes the team on her family's ship, which she's received permission to use without a proper crew because of the simplicity of the mission. I'd prefer a North American accent for her, but feel free to try something else as long as it's not too heavy.
"There was this one pilot we had for a while until he fucked up and smashed into an asteroid. Turns out he wasn't as good under pressure as he said he was. We have oxygen tanks down in the room so we snapped them on and patched up the sides until we could land at a waystation."
[Telling a story and getting a little bit animated.]
"I'll come with you to get a good look at the site and help Vern with stuff, and then I'll come back and stay with the ship, and you can call me if you need anything."
[Shy-ish. Explaining what she'll do but sort of thinking no one cares. ]
"You were mumbling like you were counting something."
[Said with a giggle, almost flirty but still kind of awkward.]
