Startopia - The Targatelli Affair

Startopia - The Targatelli Affair

Project Overview

Startopia was a cult-classic space station management game from the early 2000s, famous not just for its addictive gameplay, but for its sharp, witty, Hitchhiker’s Guide–style humour.

The original developers even released a bonus mission packed with dialogue… but it was never voice acted. That’s where this fan project comes in.

The mission is a hilarious send-up of The Untouchables and classic 1930s gangster movies. Instead of mobsters and G-men, you’ve got a galactic alien special police squad called the Unpronounceables working with the the player to take down the notorious Targatelli crime family — a clan of interstellar insectoid clone mobsters with big attitudes and bigger egos with an eye to shakedown the player’s space station.

I’m looking for voice actors ready to channel their inner Humphrey Bogart, Al Pacino, or hard-boiled noir detectives/gangsters and have a blast with some delightfully silly, over-the-top dialogue.

The roles are short and fun:

  • Unpronounceables officer: ~7 lines

  • Targatelli mobster: ~22 lines

If you love classic movie vibes, comedic delivery, and helping bring a forgotten piece of gaming history back to life, this one’s for you.

Role assigned to: Trent Poe

Unpronounceables agent - Square-jawed incorruptible American heroes. An obvious parody of the Untouchables and Elliot Ness, these Galactic Space police want the player to help them ensnare the Targetelli mob through the setting of a dangerous trap using the player as bait.

Unpronounceables should be confident, reassuring, but also streetwise and tough. Think Jack Webb in Dragnet, Kevin Costner in the Untouchables, Humphry Bogart in the Maltese Falcon.

Approx seven lines/ around 250 words total.

  • So, you've got trouble with the Targatelli Family? The Podfather on your case? Well we're here to take care of it. We're agents of the Galactic Precinct of the Space Police. The Bureau's called the Tsskk'skk'kskk'. The crims call us the Unpronouceables.

  • We got a plan. We want ya to build up this station so it attracts the attention of the Targatelli. Then you get the Family so angry that they send the whole mob in. We nab 'em in one raid. So what you gotta do is cough up the dough a few times, get 'em used to easy energy, then refuse to pay them. Sure it'll be tough but we gotta stamp this racket out.

Targatelli Mobster - A representative of the Targetelli intergalactic mafia. A wiseguy that shakes down the player. Al Capone, gangsters with Tommy guns. Nice space station you got there, shame if something were to happen to it, capisce?

Think the Sopranos, James Cagney in Angels with Dirty Faces.

Targatelli Mobsters should be cocky and streetwise, but with a hint of menace.

  • Hey. How're you doing? Say, it's a nice business you got goin' here. You want we should, ah, insure it for ya? Give us 1000e every once in a while and nothing bad will happen here. Space is a dangerous place. You get my meanin'?

  • Listen. Lemme tell ya it ain't smart to go up against the Targatelli Family. The Podfather got a long memory, see? And although eight thousand of us Podfellas are in jail, we still got six thou' clones on the outside. So you better keep an eye on your place here. Be real sad if something bad happened.
