Fox McCloud is a red fox and the main protagonist of the Star Fox series. He is sometimes referred to by the name of Star Fox, especially by his many enemies. He is additionally a pilot, combatant, adventurer and the leader of the Star Fox team. Fox is the only son of James McCloud, who educated him throughout his childhood to never give up, with a keen interest from James's best friend Peppy Hare. When Fox was a cadet at the Cornerian Defense Army Academy, he heard the news that his father, James had met a violent end at the hands of the twisted genius, Andross. The senior McCloud had been betrayed by his own wingman, Pigma Dengar and delivered into a deadly trap from which there was seemingly no escape. Only James's wingman, Peppy managed to limp home in his badly damaged starfighter as the only survivor of the original Star Fox Team. As per James's last wishes, Peppy insisted that the young Fox should take on the leadership of the group and form a new team of pilots. Thrust into the leadership role that he wasn't prepared for, Fox recruited the hot-tempered Falco Lombardi and the mechanical genius Slippy Toad to make up the new Star Fox Team. For a price, this crack group will fight against any threat to the Cornerian star system. Although it may appear that the Star Fox Team is motivated only by financial gain, Fox and the rest of the team will only accept missions that serve to uphold justice.

Falco Lombardi is a member of an avian race and the ace pilot of the Star Fox team. Although exact details on his past are unknown, other than being the leader of a gang of space runaways, but Falco had been a good friend and friendly rival to Fox McCloud, and was specially hired by his friend to be the ace pilot of his mercenaries-for-hire team, and flown in almost every mission they have made, usually retaining his brash, cool, and collected attitude. Being the ace pilot, Falco specialises in flying rings around his foes, but his rebellious nature taken from his time being the leader of a gang of space hot rodders cause him to instinctively take more chances than most pilots and sometimes he pays dearly for his brashness getting caught in some situations in which he cannot escape, and must rely on Fox for assistance, often to his chagrin. While Falco is not keen on discipline and authority, his loyalty to the Star Fox creed of justice and freedom has never let his team down, always using his natural hunting instincts to keep looking for shortcuts and alternate routes to get to the action much quicker.
Falco typically appears in all Star Fox games to date, as well as the comics and the "Star Fox Zero " promotional anime, as a supporting protagonist. He also appears as a playable character in all Super Smash Bros. games, starting with "Melee".

Peppy Hare is a retired member of the legendary Star Fox team. Having had years of service in the Cornerian Military with previous comrade and best friend James McCloud, they both started the Star Fox mercenary team, intent on serving justice and freedom. An experienced pilot, Peppy had learned many tricks in his years of flying and is also very knowledgeable about Andross's forces, since he once had to escape captivity at their hands after a scouting mission ended badly due to the betrayal of their unfaithful teammate Pigma Dengar. Peppy barely managed to escape on his own to return to Corneria to inform James's only son Fox of his father's fate. Peppy then joined the newest Star Fox team, consisting of himself and Fox, ace pilot Falco Lombardi and mechanical engineering expert Slippy Toad. Even though Peppy was much older than all the other team members, he declined the leadership role and insisted that it should be the younger McCloud to take over the team, probably as per James' last wishes before he was presumed to have been slain by Andross. Peppy then served as Fox's mentor and fatherly figure to the whole Star Fox team, frequently giving valuable instructions and advice throughout the course of their following missions.

Slippy Toad is a childhood friend of Fox McCloud and has been flying alongside him for several years. He serves as the inventor and mechanic of the team. The excitable amphibian member of the Star Fox Team, Slippy may seem like a hyper-doofus and his inferior piloting skill leaves a lot to be desired, but he has excellent mechanical know-how as he specialized in engineering at the Cornerian Academy and learned a lot from his father, Beltino Toad, being the Director of Engineering at Space Dynamics Co. Ltd. As a member of the Star Fox Team, Slippy has invented a wide variety of gadgets and vehicles. His inventions, from the Arwing, Landmaster and Blue-Marine to the Reflector and Blaster, have helped the Star Fox Team prevail over the enemy, making Slippy a major contribution to the Star Fox team's success. Slippy's main role on the battlefield is providing a Shield Gauge to determinate the health of a boss, but only if he is present to do so.
