She's Probably Dead: An Audio Drama Series

She's Probably Dead: An Audio Drama Series

Project Overview

Plot

The story follows 17-year-old Jean Langley. 6 months ago, her best friend Bowie went missing. She packed up everything, all she left behind was a voicemail explaining her plan to run away. As Jean's mental health begins to worsen, she begins receiving cryptic calls and texts from a unknown number. The number slowly begins to provide clues regarding Bowie's whereabouts. Enlisting the help of her group and friends, Jean takes it upon herself to track her down.

The entirety of the first episode has been written, and is in the process of being recorded and edited. To help with this, I need voice actors and actresses for some of the characters!

Requirements and Final Remarks on VAs:

  • Should be AT LEAST 13 years old (as per CCC guidelines). The series deals with mature topics and features swearing, so if you don't feel comfortable swearing, don't audition, please!
  • Must have Discord! This is the where I deliver announcements and chat with the crew!
  • Regarding microphone quality - you are expected to have your lines sound clear and for there to be no background noise as to not break immersion in the world and story we're trying to create. If you do not have a proper microphone, try using the dictaphone app on your phone!
  • With your audition, please provide your Discord username, including the numbers at the end! (ex. andrej#9280)
  • Feel free to audition for more than one role at a time! The more roles you apply for, the higher the chance to be cast!
  • As episodes will feature copyrighted music, the roles are unpaid and for fun only :)

Jean is our main character. A 17, going on 18, year old girl. She's dead set on finding her best friend alive and well. She struggles with poor mental health and self harm. Jean's difficult upbringing pushes her to make some questionable decisions. Above all of this, she has a kind heart and loves her friends - especially Bowie. Jean is a very determined young woman and very passionate about the things she cares about. She's very strong emotionally and very outspoken. She requires a teen/young adult voice.

  • Right, okay. Well, my mother walked out on me about a year ago. I never knew my dad. For as long as I can remember she’s been an addict and abusive. So, she met some guy on Tinder and used him as her ticket out of town. Bowie and her family took me in and her dad, Ste, is now my legal guardian. So, I lived with her, Chris- her mom, Woody- her little brother and Ste. Then, Ste and Chris got divorced. That sucked. Chris took Woody and they fucked off to Salford. It fucked Bowie’s head. Really, really badly. And I was a shitty mate, then one day she’s gone. She packed up everything. She left nothing behind except for a voicemail. She didn’t even say where she was going. The police won’t view her case as urgent because she’s 18 and she packed her stuff. They just think she’s done a runner. But I know her. Better than anyone, I know my Bowie. But when all you see on social media is everyone saying ‘she’s probably dead’, you kinda start to believe it. And if she’s dead and it’s my fault, I think I’ll probably-

  • All those nights where she would gush about me to you, all that time we     waited for you to make a move. And it finally happened. I bet today is hard   for you.

  • I know. It’s just being alone with him in that big empty house just reminds me that she’s not here.

Role assigned to: Andreas Claymore

Ste Evans is a 30-something year old man. He's a teacher and a father, specifically the father of the missing girl- Bowie. He is Jean's legal guardian, with whom he has a complicated relationship. The two constantly butt heads, for reasons we don't know of yet. After the divorce of his wife and her taking custody of their 6 year old son, Ste seems to have been a shell of himself. His life nowadays is dedicated to making sure Jean is okay. Ste can be the goofy, awkward, dad-joke teller or he can be stone-faced serious and kind of scary. There's not much of an inbetween.

  • Jean, I know I’m not your dad. Which means it’s okay for me to tell you that you’re being a twat. Listen, mate. I know you miss her, I do too. Chris left me, took Woody with her and now she’s gone too-

  • Right. So, the beginning of this chapter, we see news headlines reporting the potential kidnap and murder of Esther. Though of course we, the reader, know of her suicide attempt. These headlines symbolize Esther’s exposure, her effect on others, and the gap between Esther’s interpretation of experiences and the world’s interpretation of them.

  • God, why does everyone look so damn sluggish? Where’s the enthusiasm   to learn?

Matt is an 18 year old boy, he acts as an older brother figure in the friendship group. Matt and Bowie were in a long term relationship until she broke up with him not too long before she disappeared. He and Jean begin a romantic relationship resulting in a pregnancy, though we're unsure whether the baby is his or not. Matt is caring and nurturing, he's dedicated to the investigation to find his ex girlfriend - but the person he cares the most is Jean.

  • The fuck? Who the hell is asking Bowie to meet him at a strip club in the middle of the night

  • It’s just shit, init? She dumped me and did a runner.

  • Fine! I said girlfriend and now this is the part where you tell me I’m a           great guy, you just don’t see me in that way, we can still be friends. Can we get an F in the chat for Matt, everyone?

Role assigned to: FEGold

Ted is a 17 year old girl, she describes herself as a 'bimbo'. She is probably the wise one in the group, constantly giving advice to others and helping to rationalise stressful situations. She takes a lead role alongside Jean to investigate Bowie's disappearance. Ted is well liked by pretty much everyone due to her witty and fun-loving nature. She and Lisa are very close much like Jean and Bowie, the two sidekicks provide much comic relief throughout the series.

  • Just is. Anyway, do you really think Bowie would hit the fan if she found out? She’d probably be annoyed for about 5 minutes and then things would be fine. When have you guys ever fallen out for longer than a week and a half?

  • This is an A level English class, the fact we even turned up should be enthusiasm enough.

  • Honestly, she’s been gone half a year, she didn’t tell him she was leaving. I don’t reckon she expects him to wait.

Kenny is an 18 year old boy, he's your stereotypical nerd. Kenny is a gamer, excels academically and extremely socially awkward around new people - but a proper 'lad' around his friends. He has a very evident crush on Lisa who does not reciprocate his feelings. It's also mentioned that Kenny had developed feelings for Bowie before she left. Kenny acts as the brains of the investigation, piecing together bits of evidence like map co ordinates. Whilst Kenny is a simple man, he cares for his friends very deeply

  • Well wait, hang on. How does this person know we’re in the car?

  • This moment truly shows us the feeling of being under a bell jar. You know, an object of observation, all eyes on you. Though obviously for Esther, the bell jar symbolises madness. She’s the object of curiosity, trapped in a vacuum sealed jar, no fresh air to breathe.

  • You can all copy mine, it’s sound.

The series is centred around 18 year old Bowie Evans. Bowie is a complicated young lady with very complicated relationships with those around her. She cares more for Jean than anyone else in her life - henceforth her only leaving a goodbye message to Jean upon her disappearance. We only get to see Bowie in short flashbacks where we learn of the events leading to her decision to run away. We'll learn of the troubles with her father, Jean, her friends and others we meet along the way.

  • (Annoyed) Mum, really? (Sarcastic) ‘Yeah, your druggy mum treats you like shit and left, here’s a lasagne’.

  • (Playful) Yes. I’ve been waiting for you to say it first for about 4 fucking months now, you ‘nana.

  • (Rushed and sad) Hiya, mate. Erm…I’m taking off again for a bit. I know I said last time was the last time, but right now seems like a really good time to disappear. I didn’t… mean what I said before. You know that. I’ve got to pop off now, but I love you. Tell dad I’m safe and look after everyone for me. See you in a bit. Bye.

Lisa Grant is an 18 year old girl. She has a deadpan personality and a tendency to tell it like it is. She's a whiz with computers and any electronic device, which comes in handy during the investigation. Lisa and Ted are usually attached at the hip and Lisa has a tendency to pick on Kenny, but she still cares about him very much. Despite her hot headed nature, her friends care for her very deeply.

  • I’m not trying to be a bitch, I know it’s shit but your dear friends want to make your transition into adulthood a good one, so stop whining and let us spoil you, goddammit. We all miss her. Especially her ability to throw a kickass party. But, until the party connoisseur herself returns – I am temporarily filling that position. So, vanilla or chocolate?

  • Believe me, I’d rather Bowie be behind this wheel than me as well. But, she’s not here and her dad sold me her car for dirt cheap, so suck it up, lads.

  • You two look like shit.

Exactly what it says on the tin, a narrator. Deeper male voices are preferred but any voice is welcome.

  • Jean and Ste sit at the dinner table. Ste generously wolfs down his lukewarm pasta and pesto sauce whilst Jean half-heartedly pokes hers around with a fork, miles away. She stares at the empty chair in which her   best friend used to sit and begins to think back on the times when she was here.

  • Jean pushes her bowl of untouched pasta off the table and onto the floor. The bright red sauce splattering across the white linoleum floor and the bowl breaking on impact. Jean gets up and storms out of the room, leaving Ste to sigh and mop his brow.

  • A few hours pass. Jean and Matt sit on the bedroom floor, sipping their drinks whilst the stereo plays quietly in the background.

Role assigned to: Aenyth / Vynn

Chris is the mother of Bowie and Woody and the ex wife of Ste. Chris very clearly has a lot of rage towards her ex husband, whilst being extremely worried of her missing daughter’s whereabouts. We see in the flashbacks that Chris is a kind and caring mother and is a great surrogate parent for Jean.

  • Nonsense, it’s no trouble, sweetheart. Besides, I know that woman isn’t feeding you.

  • We love having you around, isn’t that right, woody?

  • (Annoyed) Bowie, come on. That’s not what I was saying at all.
