A 14-year-old underachieving young sailor-suited schoolgirl named Usagi Tsukino meets a magical talking cat named Luna. Luna gives Usagi the ability to transform into her magical alter ego — Sailor Moon — tasked with locating the moon princess and battling the evil forces of the Dark Kingdom.

Luna is Usagi's black guardian cat, as well as her and the other Sailor Guardians' adviser. She lives with Usagi and she is shown growing close to Artemis, another feline guardian who belongs to Sailor Venus.
"Uh, it's not a bald spot. Don't be rude!"
"Usagi, my name is Luna. And you can't imagine how long I've been looking for you. But first things first, I wanted to say thank you for saving me from those kids earlier today. Not to mention taking that bandage off, with it on I can't talk and it dulls my censory powers."
"Repeat after me, Moon Prism Power makeup!"
Artemis is Minako Aino's white guardian cat, as well as her adviser. He was the one who awoke Minako as Sailor V and has continued to watch over her since then.
"That is correct! She's Sailor V. Known as the guardian of justice! And her true identity is the pretty guardian Sailor Venus!"
"You know what Luna...I think you and I should settle down."
"If you Sailor Guardians combine all of your powers, there's no doubt you'll beat queen Beryl!"
Before becoming friends with Usagi and the other Sailor Senshi, Ami was a shy girl who did not make friends easily. She preferred to spend time alone studying and reading books. In return, many of her classmates believed her to be snobby and arrogant because of her intelligence; even being superhuman as she always finished at the top of national exams. However, once Ami and Usagi became friends, the opinions began to change.
"I am the pretty guardian who fights for love and intellegence! I am Sailor Mercury! Douse yourself in water, and repent!"
"Studying is the only thing I'm good at..And since I wan't to be a doctor like my mom I'll have to study a lot!"
Rei is a fiery, boy-crazed priestess with ambitions to become a singer, songwriter, model, voice actress and eventually settling down into marriage.
"I am the pretty guardian who fights for love and for passion! I am Sailor Mars! And in the name of Mars, I'll chastise you!"
"I don't know what's going on, but you'll pay for your evil deeds monster!"
"Don't be ridiculous! I just wanted to thank him for helping us save the passengers! And besides, your the one who has feelings for him, isn't that right? Wake up honey, sometimes those feelings are only one sided."
Makoto Kino is a tomboyish teenage girl who transfers to Juban Public Middle School in the first season. Makoto had lost her parents in a plane accident when she was younger and lives on her own in an apartment. People are usually intimidated to approach her due to her height, tough appearance, strength, and ability to fight, and she was believed to have been kicked out of her previous school due to fighting.
"I am the pretty guardian, who fights for love and for courage! I am Sailor Jupiter! I'll fill you with regret, it'll leave you numb!"
"Don't give up so easily, so what if he already has a girlfriend. Even if you get rejected it's worth giving it a shot. Crying isn't going to get you anywhere."
"And just what do you think your trying to do to my hero Sailor Moon?!"
Minako is caring towards others and yet, like Usagi, pretty clumsy at times. For example, when every other Sailor Senshi got sick in Sailor Moon R, she tried to take care of them, but just ended up making a mess. The more she tried to straighten things out, the worse it got.
"I am the pretty guardian, who fights for love and for beauty! I am Sailor Venus! Now allow me too.. Punish you with love!"
"I am the fifth and final guardian who fights for justice! I am Sailor Venus!"
"Yes, my real name is Minako Aino."
Setsuna Meiou is a college student while the others are still in middle or high school. Despite being the oldest of all the Senshi, Setsuna never assumes any type of official leadership role. Even among the Outer Sailor Senshi, she frequently defers to Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. She has a special relationship with Chibiusa.
"I am the Keeper of the Door of Space and Time. I am Sailor Pluto. Guardian of the Underworld."
"Stop right there! Those who violate the taboo and approach the door of space and time.. Must be eliminated! Prepare to die!!"
Mamoru is very protective of Usagi and has a good nature.
"One day, we will vanish. New Guardians and new stars will come. But you, Sailor Moon, you will forever be immortal. You will be the most beautiful star shining in the sky for eternity."
"A girls beauty isn't limited to her looks."
"Watch where you throw things, bunhead."
Queen Beryl is the commander of the Dark Kingdom.
"Have we been able to make any progress on locating the legendary silver crystal yet?"
"We must always keep in mind that the great ruler still remains in dire need of a massive amount of energy. We will find the silver crystal at any cost, but until then we'll provide our master with human energy instead.."
"Allow me, Jadiete, the honor of this mission. Even as we speak my monster Morga is preparing to gather human energy for the ruler. She will not fail."
"Energy is being collected from the foolish humans who are drawn to the sparkle of those jewels.. I'm sure that Queen Beryl will be very pleased." -Evil laugh-
Nephrite is the second of the Shitennou to be introduced. This is the original depiction of the character created by Naoko Takeuchi.
"Jadeite was incompetent.. But you can count on me.." *Evil laugh*
"What nonsense, now that I think about it Sailor Moon knew that girl. Which most likely means Naru Osaka knows who Sailor Moon really is.."
Zoisite was the third of the Shitennou to be introduced.
"Well, you certainly seem confident. Overconfidence has brought down many you know.."
"Right now, I'm picturing you crawling back to Queen Beryl in tears.." *Giggles* "Perfect everything's going according to plan.. Now Queen Beryl will distance herself from Nephrite..."
Kunzite was the fourth and most powerful general of the Shitennou.
"Have patience my dear Zoisite...The impatient one always loses...For now let's watch him carefully and find out what he's got planned. We can get rid of Nephrite when it suits us to do so."
"Let Nephrite do what he wants..If Nephrite manages to find the Silver Crystal..We'll just steal it from him. Meanwhile, I suggest you have some of your monsters keep an eye on him."
Motoki is a crush of Usagi and Makoto's and works at the Game Center Crown, the video arcade Usagi visits frequently. In the anime he is referred to as Motoki-oniisan by Usagi, he is also good friends Mamoru, as they are students at the same college. Although they are good friends their personalities differ greatly. He is always speaking nicely to the girls and referred to them as little sisters, unaware that they were attracted to him. His girlfriend is Reika Nishimura and has a younger sister named Unazuki Furuhata.
"Hey, the Sailor V game just came in. Do you wan't to be the first to give it a try?"
"Usagi, you almost fell down.. Are you sick or something?"
Haruna Sakurada is Usagi Tsukino's teacher during middle school. She is an English teacher who works at Juban Public Middle School.
"Ms. Tsukino! What are you doing? This kind of attitude is why your failing!"
"Alright everyone, I brought drinks!... Umino! Ms. Osaka! What happened to you two...*Tears up* Huh...Please I beg you! Can you go get someone?! We need help here!"
In the anime, he is shown as being extraordinarily goofy, jumpy and physical, which worries Rei. Consequently, he and Usagi get along well. He energetically encourages temple visitors to buy lucky charms, make wishes, pray, etc. He is known for his perverted personality, and he once tried to have Ami marry him. In spite of his goofiness, he does manage to come down to Earth when the situation warrants it.
"Hi there! What a bunch of cuties! Any of you interested in working here? Huuuhhhh?"
"C'mon' now, this isn't naptime!"
"Your an embarrassment to your master and this shrine!"
She is completely unaware that her daughter is Sailor Moon and she proves to be a very impassioned, if not authoritarian parent, at certain times. In the first episode of the anime, she kicks her daughter out of the house when Usagi brings home 30%, in an attempt to make her study. Despite her occasional anger, Ikuko is a very nurturing, caring person who only wants Usagi to make it out of middle/high school, but she never realized that Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon and lives out there fighting evil (as Usagi hides her secret from her mother, father, and brother). If she had tried to help her daughter with her studies, said daughter would have actually had better grades.
"USAGIIIII!!! STOP BRINGING HOME GRADES LIKE THIS! GO OUTSIDE AND THING ABOUT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!"
"Usagi! It's after eight o'clock!"
Shingo is shown as being an annoying twerp, who always listens to authority, and talks condescendingly to Usagi, so in other words, he's an annoying little brother.
"Hey, you're in the way. So what huge mistake did mom kick you out for this time? I sure wish I had a sister who wasn't a total loser~!"
"Dumb Usagi! Your going to be late for school again as always! Seeya!"
"Cmon' sis! What if the monster got her.." *Sniffle* "If i'd known this was gonna happen I would have let her play with my game.." *Gasp* "Usagi!"
Mr. Tsukino is Serena's father. He first appeared in Sailor Moon Episode 2, Talk Radio.
"Now why are you getting so upset? Did some boy you like give that too you."
"WHAT A BOYFRIEND?! Usagi have you been secretly dating someone?!"
"That's right! Let your dad handle this!"
"Thank you all for coming today! Welcome to our store! Feel free to look around!"
"We have the finest jewels! Remember everything here is off sale!"
"Foolish humans...Take the jewelry...And give all your energy to the dark ruler!"
"Can't you tell just by looking at her she's upset? Not that she's failed any worse than usual.."
"Hey, by the way- did you hear that Sailor V made another appearance the other night?"
Gurio Umino is a smart, stereotypical nerd and a classmate of Usagi Tsukino and Naru Osaka. At first, he had a crush on Usagi, but later, he began to date Naru.
"Hey, how'd you end up doing on your test Usagi?"
"In case you haven't heard, Sailor V is a costumed crime fighter who's been fighting evil in this part of town!"
"You have now become a charming servant of the devil. And whatever thing pops into your head, you can do it without any fear at all."
*Evil* "Go get her!"
