Redwater - Pilot Episode (Fantasy, Horror)
Project Overview
In an alternate world, not unlike Victorian England, a clan of Vampires vie for power and influence by possessing aristocratic hosts. They are pursued by Gravediggers, an ancient but dwindling order of hunters. Caught between them is Princess Cynara, who is determined to retain her humanity and fight the monster inside of her when she is cursed to become a Vampire.

(Warning: mild language, violence, smoking and alcohol use, battle sequences. TV-14)
Hey everyone, it's your writer/creator of The Call of the Flame, we've returned (though we never left?) with a brand new pilot. For lovers of the Gothic, the fantastic, and romantic. Inspired by Dracula, Frankenstein, the works of Guillermo Del Toro, and Neil Gaiman. Something I hope can capture the spirit of those stories, of old forests, monsters in sheep's clothing, protective woodsmen, and the end of innocence.
A season outline has been written. Due to the production time of this series, the recording process will begin quickly after casting, so keep an eye on your inbox for this site (the notifications aren't exactly the best).
Rates:
As of now: compensation for recordings is $16 per finished minute of dialogue (not factoring in other takes) on average, all voice talent on average will be paid roughly $45 per episode, and main cast members will make on average $130.
Above all, I want to work with people who love voice acting, who will be a positive contribution to the cast and crew.
How to Audition:
- Make sure to minimize noises or bumps while recording. Only your voice should be apparent. If you like to filter or remove vocal tics, be sure to include the unfiltered version as well.
- Record in .WAV.
- 24 bit, 48 Khz. MP3s are okay for audition as long as those standards are adhered.
- Save your file as: character_username_audition (ex. Lockley_RubbishMan_audition.wav). Please don't forget, I tend to save files on my desktop and have difficulty tracking them back to the original voice artist without a name.
- Save your file as: character_USERNAME_audition (ex. Lockley_RubbishMan_audition.wav). This is so important I have to put it in twice.
- We will critique if requested. We also accept re-takes.
- If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send us a message.
Since this is an Audio Drama, all of the show's emotion and humor must be conveyed through the character's voices, so be sure to show off your emotional range.
Note: We value acting ability over a voice that strictly matches the description, so don't let your vocal pitch deter you from auditioning.
We welcome auditioning for multiple roles as long as you can make each of them a bit different.
DEADLINE: MARCH 3RD 12:00 AM Central Time!

I'm closing a ton of roles since we're stocked up with good takes and I'd rather not get bogged down. Lockley on the other hand ... let's talk about him. He is NOT a crazy old man, he's an aging man, a bit of a scoundrel, and I may not have communicated that well enough. I modified his audition, and I'm open to re-takes. Thank you all!
Age 19. The young Princess of the Sunfall Empire, and future Empress. And the future has come a lot earlier than she anticipated. She cares deeply for the common people, and her empathy is seen as weakness by all nobles around her, and those who would profit from the suffering. But this inner conflict becomes outer conflict as she becomes possessed, and her body shared with the Vampire's sprit.
Voice: Youthful, but holds a certain majesty. Her normal voice should show her strength and humanity, her Vampiric voice should be a corruption of that. Her worst thoughts and impulses given voice.
"My name is Princess Cynara, future Empress of Certh, Queen to be of Northfen and Gradishar, and Heir Apparent to the Sunfall Empire. Such a long title. I've hardly done anything to deserve it. And now, for the first time, I'm beginning to feel the weight of that second part. "Heir apparent, future Empress." I never knew how soon the future would arrive. I suspect, no matter what mirror I look into, I'm still not going to see a future Empress."
"(v.o.) His eyes just went blank, and he listened. Obeyed without question ... (demonic) I wonder what else I can get him to do like this ... If I can feed off of him and make him forget. What was that? Did I actually just think that?"
"(Stifles a scream) What have you DONE to her!? NO!" ["This isn't what it looks like"] "NO! No stay away from me! Get BACK!" [Everything I've done, I've done to protect you.] "Protect me from yourself!
A middle-aged Vampire Hunter. Once fueled by revenge, but slowly losing his conviction. Having accepted that he's probably lost them forever. He has a scoundrel's swagger, and dry wit, his coping mechanisms of choice outside of taverns and brothels.
Voice: Gruff and haggard, slight accent. Heroic swagger. Not someone who can easily be mistaken as a royal, or even one of their guards.
"Time laddie. Time is the Vampire's chief weapon, and they spent twenty years on the grindstone, waiting for our order to die out, taking new hosts in parliament. There's two things I hate most in this world lad, Vampires and Royals. Now the lord has cursed me with Royal Vampires and a damned tender-footed boy for aid ... (scoffs)"
"Run boy!" [smashes a bottle against a Vampire] "Holy water burns the wicked!" [draws a stake from his belt] "And a wooden stake through the
heart ends them!" (cries out)
"There's nothing more these creatures can take from me girl. But I might have something to give yet. I promise, if the worst should come ... you'll never become one of them."
"The Fox", perpetually mid-thirties. Worldly and self-possessed, with a posh but relaxed manner. He's the most handsome and hedonistic of the Thirteen. Living purely for the delights of immortality and power. Charming nobles and commoners for his purposes, but too lazy to speak for his mistakes or mend them. Lately, his loyalty to Maramon has been faltering, and when he has something to gain of a secret he'll keep it.
Voice: Posh, relaxed. Speaking to commoners and women with venomous sarcasm, and to his prey with sadistic glee.
[Voiceover] "Deep in the woods is a rather strange locale for such a large cemetery. There must have been a village here, once. Something happened a long time ago to scare them off, force them to leave their dead. Now, it's the perfect place to hide the body of one of the most dangerous creatures to walk this Earth, even more dangerous than Man. "
"No need to rush, good man, you've been asleep for too long. Why, what you need is a fresh new body for your wicked old mind. We have just the host in mind for you. It's an exciting world out there, and with your help, ripe for the taking. "
[Transforms into a full Vampire] "How relaxing it feels to unwind, let my wings out. Going so soon? But we have so much planned! Come now, there's a wedding to be had, a festival to celebrate. So many occassions, so many drinks! (laughs)"
The leader of the Thirteen, and the most influential lord of the Sunfall Empire. Projecting the appearance of a rich, fat, jovial man of industry. But behind closed doors, a hulking terrifying Vampire with a lust for more than blood, but flesh itself.
Voice: In his human appearances, he appears boisterous and obtuse. But when his Vampiric side is let loose, he's the most terrifying of them all, prone to fits of rage and violence.
"Your majesty! Empress Primula, and young Princess Cynara, welcome to our humble estate." [You've certainly done quite a bit of expanding in the time since we last met] "In more ways than one. Oh, and you remember my son, Milo, my boy! Come here!"
"Indeed, opening workhouses in Northfell. After the Blight, they're brawling at the gates for the chance to work for gruel. This plague may be a blessing in disguise. A chance for reform, to make the Northfens more ... deferential to our majesty and her patrons."
[Full demon] "How in the bloody Hell did they know where to find us!? If you've compromised our cover, I'll have your limbs ripped off and scattered across the sea. All of this ... rage and fear, it's worked up my appetite. Bring me that servant. Yes." (His teeth retract, and salivate for a prolonged moment before biting."
The Empress of Sunfall, and mother of Cynara. A shrewd ruler in her time, but now her time is coming to an early end with her health on the decline. She's tough with Cynara, hoping to harden her some as Empress and pass on some wisdom before her passing.
Voice: Proud and experienced. Toeing the line between delicate and steely.
"My mother used to do the same, and even to this day, I still hear her voice, lecturing my every decision. Daughter, I hope you remember my lessons, and hear my voice after I'm gone. Guiding you, giving you wisdom."
"The Empire is not run with generosity, it is run by fear. If you give a drop, they will bleed you for everything you have." (coughs)
"Cynara! Cynara please come back! Come back! "Find her! Find my daughter or I'll have all your heads! All of you! GO!"
The common born maid of Cynara, and her best friend. Mostly demure, but she lets a little cheek shine through.
Voice: Accented. Optimistic and warm.
"You have a good heart, and you care about the common folk. One day, I'm going to tell my children that I braided the hair of the greatest Empress of Sunfall. And that she was indeed kind and fair. And happily married."
"My, the Lord's son is dreamy," ["He came off a bit strong."] "I'll have him if you don't, I'd happily bear him many heirs!" (laughs)
The strapping son of Lord Maramon (at least, the son of Maramon's host) and Cynara's betrothed. He's not the bumbling fiance, more of a second rate Prince Charming. A match any Princess can work as a start, no running away needed. Though you'll have to sit through more than a few dramatic soliloquies or mansplaining sessions.
Voice: Manly, but deep and comically posh.
"Cynara! At last, we've been apart for too long. I have thought a great deal about the time we spent together, so long ago."
"Where is he!? The intruder!? I'll have his head! How dare he threaten my love! Any man stands in my way I'll have him too!"
Early twenties. A young and fresh faced Vampire Hunter, studying under Lockley. A restless student of the forces of light. Trained in every aspect on how to kill a Vampire, but not on the consequences. Or the emotional turmoil.
Voice: Convicted, but with a shaken inexperience beneath it all. Like a young soldier. He carries himself with confidence, but only because he hasn't been knocked down yet.
[Looking for Lockley in a brothel] "I'm becoming so much more acquainted with houses of sin than I'd ever wished to be, thanks to Lockley. I thought this job would be noble, perhaps bloody at times, but a sight more moral than this."
"They're coming back! All of them." ["Load your crossbow boy!"] "I'm trying! I just can't--" [drops his bolt] "Goddammit! Hold on!" ["Hurry!"] "Just hold on! I've nearly got it! Get back!"
Mid-thirties. A Vampire Hunter driven by long fermented revenge.
Voice: Deep and baritone.
[To a skeptic of Vampires] "My brother and sister's deaths were real enough. If you'd take more care, pay a little respect. And maybe find yourself another job. Are you ready to face the forces of darkness, boy?"
"For the Empress, for Sunfall!"
A Vampire Hunter motivated by coin, and who doesn't even believe in Vampires.
Voice: Shrill, relaxed. But easily broken down to panic and desperation in high stakes situations.
"I'd be chuffed if the whispers and superstition of the last thirty damned years are shown to be true!"
"OH! Oh God, oh God give me just a--" (throws up)
Mid sixties. An elder Vampire Hunter, motivated by duty. Sworn to watch the grave of a fallen Vampire, and has fulfilled his duty most of his life.
Voice: Old and superstitious, but with a renewed energy when called upon for duty.
"The hour is late! Let me sleep in peace you--you? Who are you?"
"I told you! I told you lads, I kept my watch all these years, like my father and his father," (laughs) "Evil sleeps deep in these parts."
The last host of Alarcon--an ancient Vampire, and last ruler of the Thirteen. He's been grounded, buried for centuries, and his current host has withered in the process without blood or exercise and that should be reflected in the voice.
Voice: Dry and withered, having lost his power and integrity locked in his husk. Hasn't spoken nor fed for ages.
"My armies ... my wives ... my crown? Where is my--" (coughs)
"I hunger ... I am as parched as the sands of Anu'kai, give me something. Please. Please. Yes ... " (feeds desperately)
The voiceover for credits. A passive voice complementary to the tone, but not to be confused with a member of the cast themself. Open to a lot of possibilities for this.
"I cried for madder music and for stronger wine,
But when the feast is finished and the lamps expire,
Then falls thy shadow, Cynara. The night is thine."
"This has been a Magnir Production, I am your narrator [YOUR NAME], we thank you all for listening."
The various folk that populate the world of Redwater. Commoners with a countryside mannerism and accent.
[Servant] "I'll get that cleaned up right away your Grace. Oh, the Chief Inspector has arrived, he's waiting for you in the lounge."
[Guard] "Here's we are. We keep the prisoner in here. Oh and, if you want me to roughen him up for you, you need only give the word your Grace. I'll give him a proper beating for Sunfall and for your honor."
[Madame] "Patience lad, give me a moment to fetch one of my girls for ye." [I'm looking for someone] "Lots of gentlemen who come here don't do with names."
