Rad(io) Shorts Podcast Season 2 Episode 1: A Fresh Start

Rad(io) Shorts Podcast Season 2 Episode 1: A Fresh Start

Project Overview

The Rad(io) Shorts Podcast is the podcast where we bring you short plays in radio format, pretty rad right? We are now entering our second season and are looking to cast for episode #1 "A Fresh Start". This short play tells the story of an egocentric radio broadcaster named Anthony Margarishtay and his attempt to start a new career after being fired from his longtime radio gig.

For this project we ask that all performers who are submitting have access to a condenser microphone as well as a quiet space to record audio. As well, if you are cast we would require you to be present at one table read, this normally does not take more than an hour and we do our best to work around our performers schedules. Table read will be held over discord so having a discord account is a must as well.

Anthony Margarishtay is an egocentric radio broadcaster from the UK that has made it big in America due to his suave cadence and charming demeanor, and also is catchphrase "Greetings, Salutations, and Hello". I imagine the character to sound much like Tom Hiddleston's portrayal of Loki, but with a little bit more gravel to there voice. Please only read the Anthony lines, the other lines have merely been added to help provide context.

  • Some early lines from the play in which Anthony is quite confident he is being called in by his boss to receive a promotion. Little does he know he is about to be fired.

Margaret: Anthony! So happy you could make it! I hope we didn’t interrupt your busy schedule?

Anthony: No problem at all, it is a pleasure to finally meet you both, as you know my name is Anthony Margarishtay, greetings, Salutations and Hello.

...after a brief interlude of being distracted Margaret suggests they get back on track.

Anthony: Agreed! Now as I understand you two have taken ownership over the WK5A network and now you are coming to yours truly, Anthony Margarishtay -greetings, salutations and hello- to take on a much bigger role. Now I can't say I'm surprised, I've been saying for years-

  • Anthony is getting noticeably frustrated due to the fact that his name is being mispronounced but trying his best to keep his composure.

Anthony: No! It's like you're not even trying! It is Mar-Ga-Rish-Tay. Much like Margaritas, but less of an "itas" and more of an "Ishtay"

    Todd: like Marishka Hargitay?

Anthony: well now your saying a completely different name entirely-

  • Anthony is desperately trying to launch a series of new shows, each one more terrible than the next, this is the first attempt.

Anthony: Good evening, my name is Anthony Margarishtay, Greetings, salutations and hello! I'm here with my brand new podcast "World's greatest homes"! Now a lot of People have said to me "Anthony Margarishtay, How do you plan on showcasing the worlds greatest homes in a strictly audio based medium like podcast?" And I told them "Just you watch" to which they responded "don't you mean listen?" And I promptly replied "piss off, you wank".

Todd is the new co-owner of a Radio station who is a little too polite for his own good. Has an upbeat demeanor of a Ted Lasso type, but with a much more monotonous, apathetic sounding voice. Please only read the line for Todd, the other lines have merely been provided to add context.

  • Margaret and Todd are having a meeting to discuss how they will break the news to Anthony, that he is fired.

Margaret: Todd are you even listening?

Todd: Yes! No small talk, just straight to business I get it. You know this isn't my first time firing someone?

Margaret: ohhh I know, and that's exactly why I'm telling you, no small talk.

Todd: Nothing wrong with being polite.

Margaret: Last time we did this you told the person we were firing "if there is anything I can do to help please let me know" and do you remember what she said?

    Todd: No?

Margaret: she said, and I quote,  "you could help by not firing me!"

Todd: oh yeah now that you mention it that was a little awkward.

  • Todd: You know the definition of Buffoon is a ridiculous but amusing person… so I'm gonna take that as a compliment.

Margaret has just been made the co-owner of the WK5A radio station along with her longtime business partner Todd. Margaret is definitely the more goal oriented of the two and very clearly the one in charge of making the tough business decision. For this role I was picture a voice similar to Lizzy Caplan but am open to any take on the character. Please only read the lines for Margaret, the other lines have merely been added to provide context.

Todd: oh yeah now that you mention it that was a little awkward.

Margaret: yes, extremely! So this time none of that politeness, we need to be firm in our decision. Firing people isn't a nice thing to do, so stop trying to be nice about it. Add a little venom to your attitude.

  • Margaret: Look Anthony, you've given us plenty of great years of on-air broadcasting but the network is looking to go in a different direction and we just don't think there is a place for you in it.
