Black Grid, a stealth game!
Project Overview
Hello everyone and welcome to the Casting Call page for Black Grid!
What is Black Grid exactly?
Black Grid is a 2D stealth action game with a top down perspective in which you play the role of agent Echo. Echo is a field agent of a unit within a new branch of covert operatives started by Interpol as part of a more pro-active peacekeeping initiative. If this doesn't particularly conjure up any imagery in terms of gameplay, think the old Metal Gear games (Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, to be more precise).
Though we do feel it's important to mention that we aim to use that series as an inspiration and put our own spin on the mechanics of those games rather than copying MGS' homework and only changing a few words here and there. This means that Black Grid will deviate from those games just enough to be its own thing, with more humor and a less serious tone.
The current plans are to develop this game for the PC (no plans for Mac or Linux support yet) and release it commercially through Steam and Itch.io, while simultaneously trying to secure funding for the mid- to late stages of development. We already have a producer/programmer and character designer/artist on the team and are currently looking for some voice talent to bring the colorful cast of agent Echo and her support team to life!
How much will this project pay?
Here's the thing- Black Grid has a very miniscule budget, meaning that paying members of the development team (which includes the voice cast) will be nearly impossible. More than anything, Black Grid is a passion project, at least in its pre-production and alpha stages of development. However-! The moment funding is secured for this project, it goes without saying that everyone, from the programmer and artists to the sound designer and voice talent, will get paid not only for their future work, but also past work!
So once the prices for voice acting have been negotiated, the actors will get paid for the work they've already delivered as well! If that doesn't really do it for you, everyone who ends up having their work (including voice acting) included in the final product will earn a cut of the net monthly profits of each digital (and physical, if applicable) copy of the game sold.
How will the percentage of royalties per development team member be calculated?
This percentage will be calculated as such:
(100% / the amount of developers (VA's included)) x net profit of the month
So for example:
If the final development team is 10 members strong, this means that each developer will earn 10% of the monthly income from the game (100% / 10 dev. team members). If the net profits for the month are exactly $100, then at the start of next month, each developer will earn $10 ($100 x 10%)
What do you need from me?
If you have a relatively decent sound setup and are capable of both recording and handing in sound files with as little background noise as possible, I'd argue that everything else that you'd need is a passion for voice acting. Even if you think your equipment not adequate enough or your talent "lacking", we'd still encourage you to audition!
I'm personally not into the practice of sending rejection mails, because it just dampens people's spirit. Instead, I am a huge proponent of "fire and forget". If I don't get back to you, please don't think badly of yourself. I respect anyone who auditions for roles online regardless of how their auditions go and that isn't any different in this case.
Finally-! The audition process itself:
Make sure to recite your lines in the "ABC" format. You can add as many takes and in as many different voices as you want per take. Due to time constraints, though, I must really ask that you try and limit the amount of takes to only 3. If you really, reaaaaaaaally feel like you should add an additional take, I will allow for an absolute maximum of 4 takes.
Furthermore, you are allowed to audition for more than 1 character. So if you want to try out for all of the characters, be my guest!
This casting call will be held in multiple rounds, but I'm looking to conclude casting by the third round! For now, all available roles are sadly for female characters. There are also male characters, but they're still being designed/drawn by our lead artist as we speak. Once said male characters have their designs finished, I will try to add them to the second round of this project's casting call as soon as possible.
Some last words before you start your audition:
Please make sure that you are aware that this is a temporary unpaid project. It would spare us any awkward interactions if and when you score a role. You will eventually get paid in cold hard cash (because we adults all know that "exposure" doesn't exactly pay the bills), but until then, please treat this casting call and project like a passion project.
Lastly, if you have any questions regarding anything related to this project or even some personal questions aimed at me, please don't hesitate to hit me up with a PM. I won't bite, I promise!
This description will be updated with additional info should it be necessary =)
Happy auditioning and best of luck to you all, you absolute gems!

Hello again everyone! And that marks the end of the first round of auditions. Two of the three roles have been assigned. Not many people auditioned for Blade, unfortunately. This means that she will be included in the second round of auditions for the project. Exactly when the next round of auditions will go online I can't say for sure. For those of you interested in where this project will go, I will post anything and everything related to Black Grid's development to my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCgGpbsvAyCJvBvr3MBQHsA The channel is rather empty for the time being, but once we have something of substance to show, it will pop up on that channel. Furthermore, the next audition will also be announced on that channel and I'll use said video for the second round of auditions as well. Thank you again, everyone, for auditioning and I wish to see you all again later for the next round. If not, then I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!

And just like that- The deadline has come and gone!
Allow me to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to audition! I will now listen to- and respond to every audition with a personal thank you. Reviewing all auditions and casting people for the roles shouldn't take more than 2 days at the most. It's possible that not all roles might be filled, in which case I will just include the character(s) in the next batch of characters for the second audition. Thank you all for your patience and understanding! -
The game finally has a name!
Black Grid! The project description has been updated to reflect this.
The lone field agent of the Alpha 5 unit of I.S.E.C.T.
Echo is a woman of few words. She holds a somewhat legendary status within Interpol. Her actions in the field have earned her the nickname "the shadow", a fact she despises. She longs for the day when she can retire, but her contract with ISECT still has her bound to her employer for a good few years and her status within the organization has afforded her no rest from the myriad of ever demanding operations that she's thrust into. This mission is no different...
Echo understandably has a no-bullshit attitude and despises small talk when on missions. She can mellow out somewhat if one takes the time to know her, but even during casual conversations, she tends to be the type to not sugarcoat things. Other than that, her personality can be summed up in one word, stoic. She can get a bit foul-mouthed if you annoy her juuuuuuust enough, though.
I've been through worse. Though I'd appreciate it if our dear infil expert did a better job finding... Alternative entry points for future outings. If she insists on making me enter another compound through what amounts to a shit covered sewer, I'd be happy to jam her into a septic tank to remind her of the joys of crawling through human waste. Anyway, Rules of engagement-? (She states matter-of-factly)
I'd love to argue semantics with you right now, Pegasus, I really do. But maybe we can save this for another time? Preferably when I'm not under threat of being riddled with bullets. (She says in a somewhat annoyed, hushed tone, while trying to escape an enemy patrol)
I'm... Sorry to hear that. Hey- If it makes any difference, I don't think you're annoying at all. Having you with me on this mission is... A great comfort. And... You're doing a great job directing communications. 'couldn't have asked for a better support. (She says in a rare show of moral support for one of her support crew members. Her pauses indicate that she isn't used to these heart to hearts)
The terrain and infiltration expert of the Alpha 5 unit of I.S.E.C.T.
Terra is part of agent Echo's support team. Her primary responsibilities include giving Echo intel on the different zones she has to traverse as well as studying potential points of entry that can be used during missions by Echo to infiltrate certain compounds or organizations.
Terra is the youngest member of the Alpha 5 unit, but is a surprising combination of mature, intelligent, social and somewhat energetic (but she CAN show restraint when the situations demands her utmost focus).
Pegasus mentioned that you didn't very much care for my infiltration plan. I do apologize for the rather unsanitary conditions of your insertion into the compound, but you have to understand that other potential entry points were out of the question. Still, the least I could do is direct you to the nearest cleaning facilities so you can rinse off. Especially if it helps me stay clean if the rest of what Pegasus said was accurate. (She says calmly, clearly trying to make it up to Echo so that she doesn't end up in a septic tank)
Echo-! It's been a while. How have you been, dear friend? Now, I'm afraid that I have some bad news and bad news. So which one would you like to hear first? The bad news or the bad news? (She says somewhat cheerfully to try and soften the blow of giving Echo bad news after bad news)
The compound, while relatively obscured by the wild, dark waves outside, is huge. Its exterior façade doesn't do its true scale justice. Not only that, but intel gathered from within shows that some parts of the compound house entire biomes. Each and everyone of them complete with its own flora and fauna. Your suit has been modified in a way where it adapts to the weather conditions found in these biomes, but I'm afraid that our intel was incomplete at the time of the operation's launch. So please practice extreme caution when entering areas not detailed in the report.
The survival and interrogations (intel acquisition) expert of the Alpha 5 unit of I.S.E.C.T.
Blade used to be a former member of the S.I.S. but gradually took on more missions which posted her behind foreign borders and enemy lines. She eventually ended up at Interpol and was one of the first agents to volunteer for the I.S.E.C.T. program. She is an expert in all things survival and interrogations related, and the latter part which she performs with ruthless dedication. She can make even the most tight-lipped of enemy spies sing. Everything that Echo knows about interrogating she learned from Blade, and as Echo's former mentor, the field agent holds a great deal respect for the former S.I.S. operative.
Blade is known as the "cool beauty" and is pretty social but exudes an aura of confidence. While she takes shit from no one, she also isn't as anti-social as Echo and can carry a pleasant conversation to the point where the other person usually divulges a lot more information than they were willing to initially let go. However, those who have witnessed her methods in the interrogation room will tell you that her methods for acquiring enemy intel can border on the straight up sadistic. This has earned her the name of "the interrogation demon" within Interpol.
Well, well- If it isn't my favorite subordinate. How's life been treating you? You excited for your next big outing? (She asks Echo a little teasingly)
Easy now, lass. You will have enough time to crack open a few skulls later, but you have to remain patient. Your demise will mean the end for those hostages. Make sure you get out alive first, then worry about the others. Remember what I taught you. You're no good to anyone dead. (She says with a stern sense of caution in her voice, trying to keep Echo from acting in a way that might get her killed)
Talk to me, lass... What ails you..? (She says in a motherly tone to a distraught Echo)
