ORIGINAL MUSICAL: Demo Vocalists Needed

Project Overview

"Burnished Bronze and Crimson Cruel" is a new, original musical written by me. Inspired off of Mark Twain's "The Prince and The Pauper", the musical tells the story of Prince Markyll, the heir of a kingdom (a fictionalized 1700s Europe). One night sees him sneaking past royal walls to explore the village. Here, he meets a curious, eccentric street rat named Bazel, and a friendship blooms. But when the unlikely bond turns into a secret romance, the two young men must find love in a world that forbids it. The show is currently in its first draft, though I have performed a few of the songs and scenes in front of audiences. A reading is currently scheduled for the summer, and a workshop will take place afterwards.

I am currently in the 'demo' phase of music, meaning I'm writing the songs and recording test vocals along with the track. However, I realized that only having my voice may be confusing to listeners, especially with multiple parts in the song. That being said, I need some voices! I will continue singing the part of 'Markyll', but I need some other actors.

Note: *The majority of roles will require accent knowledge. Mostly, actors will speak in standard British.

RULES:

  • I'm not too picky on mic quality; these are demo vocals, after all. But I do ask that you don't use a webcam or phone. An actual microphone is appreciated; if you can, I'd like the quality of your sound to match mine in the other demo tracks. (EDIT: I use a Blue Yeti, which I speak into the side of, not the front.)
  • Vocal training and musical experience is preferred, but not necessary. I'd like for singers, especially for principal roles, to have a basic understanding of music and voice. I'd also like quick learners who can learn music easily. Note: This musical is a pop opera, so the operetta style of voice is preferred.
  • Note that not all of the music is written yet. After being cast, you may not be used right away. It could be a few days, it could be a few months. All I ask is that if you are cast, you commit. I get it; life happens, and things may come up that conflict. If something like this happens, please let me know ASAP, so I can contact an understudy or hold an emergency audition. Note that I won't be upset if you have to opt out, just please let me know in advance. :)
  • PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR AUDITION IN ONE PIECE. Doing so in three separate piece makes it difficult for me to organize.
  • Please listen to the already existing music; there may be some songs that are vocally challenging. Please be sure that you are able to sing these. Some of the demo tracks do not include the accents; please audition in full accent regardless. These redone demo tracks will be done with accents.
  • EDIT: The gender markers on characters are only to mark the gender of the character, not the required actor. Should a female identifying person wish to audition for a male role, or vice versa, this is fine. (Note that the genders of characters are not strict. Future directors will have the right to change names, pronouns, and genders as they see fit.)

Before auditioning, please refer to this google drive doc for audition materials and requirements.

EDIT 2019-04-22: If auditioning for ensemble, please refer to this doc.

  • Thank you!

Wow! 70 auditions! First, thank you for taking time to audition for this project. I'm very impressed with the work done! I am a Grade 12 who just graduated, so I'm still wrapping up diploma exams and such. But once that's done, I will begin contacting people with offers for callbacks and the like. I ask that upon being offered a role, be it lead, supporting, or ensemble, you please stay in touch. You may not be used right away, so please keep your commitment to this project in mind. Thank you again to everyone, and stay tuned for callback information. -Bobby
  • lmao oops

Okay so it has been drawn to my attention that putting auditions right near exam and graduation season was pretty much the worst decision ever, and I've gotten several extension requests. That being said, I'm pushing back the deadline again to MAY 20th. Remember that I've added a new ensemble role to audition for. *I WILL ALSO be adding sample scripts to the project description. I understand it's a little unfair of me to ask you to audition for a character you know nothing about, so I will be cutting out chunks of script for you all to read. Thank you again all auditionees for your hard work and patience! -Bobby
  • Bonus Audition Material! (+ Ensemble info)

Hello, auditionees! I just posted another test demo for a song that I realized had some pretty good audition material. That being said, if you'd like an opportunity to add on to your audition, feel free to record yourself singing any part of this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw3QTmD0eB0&t=1s). This is mostly Bazel's song, but you are free to sing it for other roles as well. This is not required; this is just to give you an opportunity to add more to your audition if you were possibly unsatisfied with it! Also, I'd like to address the question of ensemble info. I will soon be adding a 'general ensemble' role, as well as extending the due date. You are welcome to submit auditions for this. Every auditionee that is not cast as a named role will be offered a spot in the ensemble; this can be denied if you so choose. Thanks again, and don't forget to keep sharing!
  • Deadline!

Wow! I'm very pleased to see the amount of auditions so far, however, not quite enough. I'm extending the deadline until the 30th. If you could, please send this audition to your musically inclined friends! Thank you again for your hard work!

Ensemble is pretty self explanatory. Singing in accents is not as important here, as you are singing in a group. Ensemble members must be able to learn harmonies and lines quickly. You must follow the music exactly timing wise and vocal wise, we don't want a messy chorus. Ensemble is technically the hardest role here. You must be ready to take several notes. Some ensemble members may be asked to read small lines or given small solo bits.

You have been asked to sing an excerpt from "The Happiest Day in Hazelhorn". Please read the google drive doc listed in the project description; there, you will find a breakdown of the harmonies. Please learn and sing the harmony that best fits your vocal range.

In your audition comments, please tell me your voice type and tessitura, so I have a better understanding of where to put you in future ensemble pieces.

  • Sing 0:52 to 1:07 from "The Happiest Day in Hazelhorn"

  • Sing an ENSEMBLE excerpt from a a song in a CLASSICAL or POP OPERA musical.

Bazel

Bazel is a chipper, carefree street rat who, despite his poverty, lives live with a skip in his step and a song in his heart. He deeply loves Markyll, and is willing to risk anything to keep him.

Bazel speaks in a thick, east end Cockney accent. Baritenor, B2 to E4.

  • Sing 1:48 to 2:14 in "If Stars Aligned "

  • "Markyll just didn’t understand. He was a prince, for heaven’s sake! Handsome manners, handsome face, or, at least, that’s what his mum always told him. How hard was it to find love? Clearly, it was impossible. He wished he had an answer. He wished it was obvious. He wished it was so obvious, he understood immediately. He wished it were so glaringly, outstandingly obvious, the entire kingdom could be able to see it."

  • Sing 0:25 to 0:41 in "Wicker Lamp's Light"

Edward is Markyll's much more straight laced, mature twin brother. He takes his job as Markyll's adviser and bodyguard incredibly seriously, and although he wants the best for his young spirited brother, he often lets him get away with just about anything.

Edward speaks in a high class, "standard posh" English accent. Baritenor, B2 to E4.

  • Sing 2:02 to 2:25 in "Judas"

  • "I’m afraid I must draw a line somewhere, dear brother. I let you get away with a lot of things, but I can’t have you recklessly going into the city. You are kept safe within these walls for a reason. No matter how good of a leader you are, someone is going to dislike you, and some of those people have guns they aren’t afraid to use. Besides, there’s no way father would allow you to marry a peasant."

  • Sing 1:48 to 2:14 in "If Stars Aligned " (I understand this is Bazel's part, but it's good audition material, and there isn't much Edward content yet.)

Victor-Remi is a charming, sly, and fierce thief known around the country for his daring and impressive crimes. No one quite knows where he came from, but he has a fairly interesting past, especially involving Bazel.

Victor speaks in a thick Cockney accent, and has a honeyed, high pitched, slick voice. Just listening to him should tell the viewer that he means trouble. Tenor, F3 to G4.

  • "Oh? A secret admirer? I’m charmed. Aye, I’m the one you speak of, and my patience is running thin. Are we going to do this nice and easy, or are you going to pull at your leash? Wouldn’t want to scuff up those china hands of yours. "

  • (After shooting the wall beside Markyll) "Tch tch tch. Dear, dear, you'll have to excuse my aim."

  • Sing 1:48 to 2:14 in "If Stars Aligned ". This is not Victor-Remi's song, but there is not currently a song he is in at the moment.

Mags is the brash, snappy head maid of the palace staff. Despite her somewhat crabby attitude, she is very sweet and maternal, especially to Markyll, who she aids in sneaking out one night.

Mags speaks in a rapid east end Cockney accent, but I may experiment with Scottish. Please note in your audition notes if you can speak/learn a Scottish accent or not. Alto, C4 to C5.

  • "Oi! Yoo-hoo, sire! Stop it wif' those long legs of yours, let a woman catch up! I h'aint as tall as you!"

  • "Oh, but Your Highness, she's such a pretty creature. Surely, you has' the flutterbys by now, eh?"

  • Sing 0:00 to 0:35 in "If Stars Aligned". This is not one of Mags' songs, but Mags doesn't have any existing singing parts yet. If needed, you are welcome to sing it up the octave.

Hortensia is the princess of a neighbouring kingdom. She is kind, intelligent, and behaves 'the way a lady should', but she isn't without her snark and wit. She is Markyll's arranged wife, and knows about his affair with Bazel. Thankfully, she vows to keep his secret safe.

Hortensia speaks in a Scottish accent, but if you are unable to do this, don't let this deter you from auditioning. I am perfectly fine with the character being voice in a standard English accent. Mezzo soprano, D4 to E5.

  • "Dear me. You look like you want to be here just as much as I do."

  • "Ah, he is a handsome fellow, is he not? I should've known. I saw the way you looked at him when you entered."

  • Sing 0:00 to 0:35 in "If Stars Aligned". This is not one of Hortensia's songs, but she doesn't have any existing singing parts yet. If needed, you are welcome to sing it up the octave.

The deceased, beloved mother of our lead twins. She is only present in the first number, and does not sing.

Drusilla is kindhearted, calm, laid back, and (obviously) motherly. I'd like a smooth, maternal voice. She speaks in a standard English accent.

  • "The streetlamps don’t just exist to light up the paths when the day grows dark. They look like stars, do they not? They put them there so people can wish upon them when the stars can’t be seen. I’ve a secret. It works."

  • "Remark this, darlings. Miracles only come one time, and only one time in a life. Though, I was lucky enough to be granted two. I’ve the wicker lamps to thank for that."

Markyll and Edward at eight years old. I'd like a young sounding voice without it being grating or nasally. They do not sing. Both brothers speak in a standard English accent.

  • "Edward, come on! Come now, Mum’s waiting, and the doctor said she must have her rest! We can’t keep waiting for you!"

  • "The sky's too cloudy; there's nothing to wish upon."
