Onmyou Taisenki Episode 2 Fandub

Onmyou Taisenki Episode 2 Fandub

Project Overview

Welcome to the Casting Call for Onmyou Taisenki Episode 2!

If you haven’t seen the previous casting call for this series, then let me introduce myself. I am Soulgig, a hobbyist VA since around the last half of High School. I’ve been involved in many projects, some that have produced content that is still around or has vanished, and some that have not.

Intent

As is stated this is for a fandub of Episode 2 of Onmyou Taisenki around a decade old series. This is a continuation of the first episode casting call, and is intended at this moment to only cover Episode 2.

Qualifications

I’ve been helping with projects over the years. This includes audio mixing/mastering for projects such as Adversaria’s Kubera series, and her Phantom of the Opera fanfic radioplay. This has given me experience in combining and making believable soundscapes with leveled sound to compliment their place in the soundscape. You can also find the video for the first episode linked to in the Completed Works Section

What can you expect after casting?

Anyone cast in a role will receive the following materials: A script with clip reference and time reference for original video, clips of video to compare and match lip flaps to, guidelines for recording and submitting completed lines, pronunciation guide (when needed). I've tried to make the materials as easy to use and to make your job as a VA as easy as possible as I understand the amount of work that goes into giving a great performance.

Expectations for Auditions

For the purpose of auditions you should refer to the impact a character has on an episode by their line amount. The higher the line amount, the higher the standard for auditions rises. This is not to discourage those who feel they don’t have fantastic mics for auditioning. Some USB mics can produce some excellent sound if put into the right conditions. This is to make sure that I can best represent you the actor in the best light. It’s unfair to cast someone in a role where their bad quality (hiss, noise, etc) would earn them the ire of the audience even though their just doing their job since the director cast them. Additional effects such as Noise Cancellation, Equalizer, etc. should not be used in your audition. I have my own audio chain that I use, and having everyone at their base quality makes things much easier to make everyone sound as if their coming from the same place. Especially in the case of Noise Cancellation as this is a destructive process that should only be done in the post-production phase to mitigate the effects.

Tips and Tricks?

This section is not mandatory to the project but will help give you an idea of how to make your audition more presentable and much more likely to be chosen. These are as follow:

1. Keep your distance to the mic around 6 inches away. A good guideline is to make the "hang ten" hand sign or the phone sign. Place this sign with one end touching where the mic is and then position yourself about where the other finger sticks out. Depending on hand size there may be adjustment as you may be closer or farther away from the mic.

2. Try to record your audition volume at around -18 to -9 DB on average with peaks no louder than -3 DB. This allows for a clear strong signal that will require less boosting which can lead to unintended results. After recording just eyeball where the average of your volume tends to hit. At best the median should be in that range.

3. Record in .WAV mono. . As WAV is uncompressed it is more 1:1 to real life allowing for easier subtle manipulation from the post processing side.

4. Give the spark of life! Everyone has unique properties to their voice which I strive to hear. Give me something no one else can match that is "your" unique interpretation.

5. You do NOT have to copy the previous JP VA's or the previous first episode fandub VA’s. it defeats the purpose to bring about a new interpretation of the material which makes this type of hobby fun! If you feel that's the only way you can see it personally than that's fine. Just don't feel pressured to copy someone else's performance.

Latest Updates

  • Critiques and Cast Icoming Today

After a lot of work and about 23 pages of a word document I have finally completed going through every single audition and trying to give the best possible feedback I feel could be helpful. Critiques will be sent out shortly through PM as they aren't exactly short and I am unsure if the comment system would be able to handle the bulk. All PM's will come in a batch file for all auditions, so if you auditioned for more than one character you will receive all of the feedback together. If you were cast the feedback for that particular character will given through the role management system that CCC has, so don't worry if you so one particular character missing. If you are cast I will send a message and 1 week will be given for a response so that everyone can be confirmed that they are available for recording. Thank you for all the hard work, and I hope to see everyone improve in the future.
  • Audition period is now over

The deadline has passed and the audition period is now over. Thanks to the time and consideration you have all given to the project it will take some time for me to get through all the auditions that have been submitted. I can't give a firm timeline for that but I would say around a week or so since there are over 100 auditions to look over. I will also be making some feedback/critiques for everyone who has auditioned. However, please understand. My critiques are not meant to be used as an indicator of how good or how bad of an actor they are. All I try to do is express how they appear to another party and the effect they have on the listener. It is up to you to take it with a grain of salt and take what you want from it and ignore what you don't feel is right. Thank you all for the effort you have put into auditioning! You will hear from me as soon as possible.

Riku Tachibana

Role assigned to: Devin_DK

Short Bio: Riku is the protagonist of Onmyou Taisenki. Riku in general is a mild, some-what weak willed character. He’s not prone to speaking up for himself and can be easily pushed around by others who have a stronger will or expression of emotion. This does not mean he mumbles or does not express what he thinks, he is just usually shy and reserved and sensitive to how other feel and see him. The events of the first episode have hit him hard. His Grandfather is now in the hospital, and the battle from before he almost wishes to find out is a dream. This has lead him to be a little more reserved and thoughtful.

Vocal Characteristics: Riku is a very weak willed character. He’s very polite and is embarrassed and scared easily. Ideally, the VA would need to be able to be very reticent and shy, but avoid mumbling, and be able to show determination when cornered.

Line Amount: 117

  • (Thoughtful, reflecting on the events of Episode 1. Another character has found out he has no parents and remarks that it must be tough) *Noise of Disagreement* No. There’s been a lot of stuff going on, but I’m fine.

  • (Concerned, Scared, Stunned, in the middle of a battle) If I just do that….they’ll just dodge again!

  • (Off-put, weirded-out, uncertain, eye is slightly twitching) She thinks he’s her cat’s ghost, I think.

Ujiyama

Role assigned to: KeybladeAli

Short Bio: Ujiyama is the main villain of this episode. Ujiyama comes off as a bit of a snake in the grass. His tone is can be light to make his words sound like casual talk rather than the insult/jab he intends it to be. His primary role in the episode is finding out the whereabouts of Yamase from Episode 1.

Vocal Characteristics: Ujiyama sounds sly most of the time, not the exact stereotype of that kind of character but enough to where you can tell his words when talking with comrades typically have a double meaning behind them.

Important Note: This character does curse during the episode.

Line Amount: 57

  • (Light hearted, making a jab at another character) Ah, what a waste. Keep that up and Mikazuchi will get mad.

  • (Teasing it out, trying to interest another character) If that’s really all…He said something last time to me….About clues to the Originator.

  • (Excited, Triumphant, in the middle of battle) How’s that! Feel the wrath of hell!

cast offsite

Short Bio: Momo is a childhood friend of Riku. Momo is pretty naïve about pretty much everything. She is prone to overreact to even the most mild of statements, and during the episode is prone to overblowing situations and making them up into much bigger fantasies inside her head. She has a crush on Riku but is reluctant to admit it even as others have already figured out that she probably does.

Vocal Characteristics: Momo is a happy go lucky character. She rarely becomes depressed unless it’s about RIku. She is also prone to overacting to the extreme when she overreacts to situations or overblows them.

Line Amount: 38

  • (Concerned, Thoughtful) What’s wrong with him? He seems depressed.

  • (Overreacting and Overblowing a situation) Is she  going to confess! No way! Was RIku late because he was out with Rina? She is pretty serious but it can’t have gone that far!

  • (Scared, Intimidated) I don’t know that name.

Role assigned to: GeoffButlerVA

Short Bio: Mumyou is Ujiyama’s Shikigami. Seen only in spirit form and in battle, there isn’t really much known about him or his personality. He can sense auras from people, and he has the ability to project illusions from himself, but his personality seems pretty level. He isn’t prone to yelling to much and is generally mild mannered.

Important Note: This character does curse during the episode.

Line Amount: 23

  • (Uncertain) Although I sense an aura, I can’t tell for certain

  • (Chiding, Amused, Smug) What you see is not always real!

  • (Finishing Move, Yelled out) Sure Kill! Fiery Sonic Wave!

Kamiya Ryuji

Role assigned to: HerotonAlmighty2011

Short Bio: Kamiya is a rough and tumble character. He’s prone to get into fights especially with those who think they are better then others. His attitude is mostly off-putting coming off as rough and hostile most of the time as if trying to put people at a distance from him. While his methods may be rough he genuinely seems to have good intentions most of the time such as making sure people eat their veggies.

Vocal Characteristics: Kamiya comes off as rough. His words are rather harsh and generally sound aggressive to most people. He doesn’t usually like to show his softer side usually trying to brush people off with a more aggressive response to keep them at arms length.

Line Amount: 19

  • (Angry, Annoyed, Finished a fight) Just cause you’re older, you think you rule the world. How dumb.

  • (Embarrased, Off-Put, Trying to brush off) Bah, it was nothing like that. They were just stupid brats.

  • (Soft, Kind, Caring) You don’t need to say anything. In hard times….*Happy/Confident Noise* (Turns around to leave and starts to walk away) Eat your veggies.

Mamiya

Role assigned to: IngIngVA

Short Bio: Mamiya is the teacher of RIku’s class. While she at first comes off as kind and compassionate as a teacher this is all just a front. She tends to have some severe attitude changes when she believes no one is watching or when she is speaking/mumbling to herself. This creates a rather polarization of her normal kind attitude to her more grumbling, vain mood.

Vocal Characteristics: As is mentioned in the Bio. Mamiya is a polarized character in terms of attitude and delivery. You may be saying one line in a sweet, caring, normal voice, and then a tonal change will switch to someone who is angry/annoyed, or just plain vain in terms of attitude. Take that as you will.

Line Amount: 19

  • (Normal, kind, sweet) Is he absent? (Annoyed/Grumbling to herself) Don’t tell me I’ve got a truant on my second day.

  • (Normal, Self-Confident) An ancient tome? Let me see…I did major in classical literature after all.

  • (Flustered, Trying to find an excuse) C-Could you leave it with me? I have a Kanji test to make. (Louder, Suddenly though of an excuse) That’s right! If you don’t leave right now, you will be cheating!

Yuuma

Role assigned to: Lucasfa1

Short Bio: Yuuma is the main rival to Riku on the Earth Style Side. Yuuma is obsessed with gaining power. Having followed Mikazuchi after his father was sealed in stone, and his mother’s memories were wiped after losing her Shikigami, he does this because he wants to follow someone with power. He is very much a slow burning inferno. He is not aggressive in his words in that sense, but his words can come across as sharp due to his own knowledge of the strength of himself and his shikigami. This tends to make him sound a bit upright and uptight. He is the older brother of Souma though due to his actions they have been in constant conflict and eventual estrangement.

Vocal Characteristics: Yuuma is very self-assured. His attitude is very much like a slow burning inferno. He is not prone to yelling but looking down on others who are weaker then himself. This comes across as holier-than-thou or uptight.

Line Amount: 15

  • (Annoyed, much akin to a pest attacking a lion and not knowing it’s weaker) Know your place….Shikigami Summoning!

  • (Dismissive, Uninterested after discovering it’s not what he wants) Not this one. Rangetsu.

  • (Authoritative, No Argument) Don’t tell anyone. It’s an order. Find Yamase’s whereabouts and report that.

Role assigned to: IngIngVA

Short Bio: Rina is the most oddball of all the characters in Onmyou Taisenki. A fan of the occult, which probably was inspired by her mother. Momo and Rina seem to know each other, but it’s unknown if their friends or not at his point. Her oddball tendencies tend to lean to her obliviousness to social norms, such as when she immediately grabs Kogenta’s leg and starts to rub against it once she believes it’s her dead cat come back to life. She also has the tendency to give nicknames to characters which some would consider insults. This is shown when a character who usually devours the group’s food from hunger Rina starts to call him Trash Can. Though this is delivered in the most naïve and innocent way possible as if that’s a totally appropriate nickname for someone.

Line Amount: 14

  • (Estatic, Crying with joy, Clinging to Kogenta) You’re Mr. Tiger, right? You died at the traffic ccident and came back to see me, right?

  • (Like a chant or she can’t believe it) Mr. Tiger! Mr. Tiger!

Short Bio: A Heaven Style Toujinshi seen at the start of the episode. He is being hunted by Yuuma to find the location of the gate and to check if his drive belongs to the Originator. Otherwise nothing more is known about him since he is defeated in a few minutes.

Line Amount: 7

  • (Defiant, Determined) Who would tell you? Shikigami Summoning!

  • (Trying to snap his Shikigami out of being intimidated) Snap out of it! Let’s do it!

Short Bio: Rangetsu is the Shikigami of Yuuma. Belonging to the Byakko which are considered the strongest of the Shikigami being the Shikigami of Trust. Rangetsu is an imposing figure. His profile is big and intimidating and has a voice to match. Many Shikigami who come against him are immediately intimidated by his posture. Nothing more is known about this point in the series.

Vocal Characteristics: Rangetsu is an imposing figure easily exuding his power and strength. His voice should match his figure of intimidation.

Line Amount: 5

  • (Announcing Himself) Rangetsu of the Byakko! Summoned!

Role assigned to: zachholz

Short Bio: An unknown Shikigami that appears at the end of the episode. The only information known at this point in the series is that he is partnered with Masaomi. However for the sake of this audition I will expand. Kibachiyo is much alike to his partner Masaomi. His demeanor and attitude is very playful, aloof, and just a bit flamboyant though not to the stereotype. Even when speaking normally you can still hear the playfulness in his voice just barely hiding beneath the surface.

Vocal Characteristics: Kibachiyo is a mostly playful, aloof, and flamboyant. Even when speaking normally there are still traces of his playfulness and aloofness hiding within his tone. You would be hard pressed at times to tell when Kibachiyo is being serious or if he’s just playing around with you.

Line Amount: 2

  • (Reporting to his partner) Masaomi, we found him. The Originator.
