Oculynx X9 - Final Fantasy IX Voice Mod (Main Cast) - Still Seeking Regent Cid, Ruby, and Zidane (Lead Role)

Oculynx X9 - Final Fantasy IX Voice Mod (Main Cast) - Still Seeking Regent Cid, Ruby, and Zidane (Lead Role)

Project Overview

Oculynx X9 is being developed as a playable Voice Mod, extending from the success of the Final Fantasy IX Fandub on YouTube. We aim to deliver a groundbreaking journey that infuses Final Fantasy IX with mesmerizing voice-overs and a modern, yet faithful re-composition of its iconic soundtrack. Whether you are a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the series, the X9 Voice Mod promises to expand on this unforgettable adventure.

If you are interested in joining the X9 Voice Team, you must meet these requirements.
- You need to be comfortable and flexible with live direction. If you require an exception or have a busy schedule, we are willing to accommodate.
- Your audio must be free from sound reflection. Some of our VAs navigate these challenges by either recording in a smaller space or draping a thick blanket over top of themselves and the microphone.
- Please refer to the character description, vocal tone, and directorial notes when auditioning for a role.

If you are familiar with the X9 Voice Mod, we have made a significant amount of changes to our development process, based on community feedback.
- We've implemented scripts in place of YouTube Reference Videos.
- YouTube Reference Videos are still available for reference purposes.
- Direction has now been implemented for each line of dialog.
- We've shifted up leadership by assigning qualified individuals to lead different aspects of the project.
- We've shifted up Discord roles to limit the use of @everyone tags.
- "Mastering" Sequences are being scrapped. In place, we will be aiming to complete each pass as we take them on.
- We've built a cast list that definitively indicates which roles are open/closed.
- We've overhauled and simplified the process of submitting recordings.
- Voice Actors recording larger chunks of dialog will be asked to record and submit a small batch prior to the entire lot to limit technical revisions.
- We are casting a large team of VAs to cover the entirety of Disk 1. We'll be handing Disk 2, Disk 3, and Disk 4 in a similar manner to significantly reduce development time. This will be more catered to Recurring Roles.

We've begun the casting process for our primary roles. We've also begun preliminary casting for our Recurring Roles. The Recurring Roles will be continuously extended to keep up with our current needs.

Latest Updates

  • Casting Update

First off, thank you to everyone who expressed interest in the X9 Voice Mod for Final Fantasy 9. Between CCC and Voice123, there were hundreds of responses (which made the process a little time consuming, so I apologize for they delay.) Casting is still ongoing for three key characters, as well as general interest in the Recurring Roles category.

    Zidane

This is a tough role to cast, not because of my own personal connection through the Fandub but because of the sheer amount of energy and youthfulness demanded in the role. The challenge here has been trying to find a voice with that youthful, playful, energetic edge with a tone that doesn't come across too mature. I'm going to keep this role open until I cast the remaining characters.

    Regent Cid

Filling the shoes of a Voice Actor who previously performed this role to the highest caliber, the bar has been set immensely high on this role. It's important to note that words like "Gwok" and "Rabbit" should not be spoken as is, but rather expressed with a creature like sound that recognizes the form he has been cursed with. He is also a the ruler of Lindblum, so while he may carry that youthful spark, he also needs to maintain that wise air of authority and level of leadership worthy of the ruler of Lindblum.

    Ruby

Lastly is Ruby, the spirited and lively Tantalus member with a Southern flair. She mainly accompanies the main cast through Mognet letters after the inciting event in Alexandria. Ruby can be very cheerful, but will shift in an instant when something strikes a nerve. This role requires a lot of energy.

    Recurring Roles

Many of those who weren't selected for roles they auditioned for were still contacted to take on recurring roles. I'm primarily listening for things like, "How is this person portraying the character?" and "Is their microphone of acceptance quality?" or "Is their recording environment free from sound reflection." We have a number of Voice Actors who have overcome these hurdles either by using a thick blanket or shifting to a smaller space such as a closet. It makes a big difference!

If you feel that you might be a proper fit for any of the roles outlined above, please feel free to submit an audition. If you've already applied and feel you could do better, by all means share an updated recording and I'll take another listen. I have been listening to every demo that has come in and will continue to do so until we cast the remainder.

  • Main Roles Extended to Feb. 28th

We've been having such a large response for the primary roles and a lot of really good auditions have been coming in. In fact, it has come to my attention that a small number of people really wanted to try submitting for the project, but just couldn't find time due to their hectic schedules. In response, I've pushed the deadline for Zidane, Princess Garnet, Vivi, Freya, Quina, Eiko, and Kuja to February 28th. You all have an extra week to share the casting call and audition for your favorite roles before a selection will be finalized.

  • Main Roles - 1 Week Left to Audition

We're receiving hundreds of responses on both CastingCall.club and Voice123 for the primary cast. If you're interested in contributing to the X9 Voice Mod, you still have a week to submit your demos. Good Luck!

Zidane Tribal

cast offsite

Character Description:
Zidane Tribal is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy IX. He is a thief who works for the Tantalus Theater Troupe set to kidnap the princess of Alexandria, an event that escalates to a quest to protect the planet of Gaia. Zidane is laid-back, casual, outgoing, and generally friendly to those around him. He is flirtatious with women, but develops feelings for Garnet specifically. When the situation calls for it, he can be more serious, particularly in the face of danger. Zidane cares for those around him, often offering them advice on life, and is selfless in his actions. He tries to conceal his insecurities and fight them alone.

Vocal Tone
This should be played in a very standard North American dialect (more West Coast style). Play Zidane as upbeat, fun, and caring, mixing in excitement, a bit of cheekiness, and unwavering friendship to the people he cares about. Your pitch should not be deep, it should be energized and youthful. Think along the lines of Red XIII in the second half of Rebirth.

Directorial Considerations:
- Consider your "Objective" within the scene. You don't have to make it complicated. What does your character want? What strategies is your character using to achieve it? What is getting in their way of achieving it? What does your character have to lose?
- Your audio must not have any sound reflection. Consider recording with a blanket, or inside a space where the microphone isn't picking up the sound reflection in your room.
- Lastly -- Consider your environment(s) and read between the lines. If you just record the audio as-is, there won't be much life to it. You don't want to wander off-script, but there is still a lot of flexibility that can be added to the dialog to acknowledge breathe life into your recording.

  • (Steiner Collapes in a Blizzard) Yo, Rusty! You're...not alright, are you? What happened to you guys? Hey, Rusty! Move it or lose it! Get up! (Zidane kicks Steiner). It's not use... (Garnet Collapses) Oh no! Garnet! Not you, too? Garnet? She's out cold... Shoot... I'm falling asleep...

  • Ipsen is a character from a play, but he's a real-life adventurer. I think the play is based on his adventures. It kinda goes like this... Ipsen and his good friend Colin worked at a tavern in Treno. One day, Ipsen got a letter. The letter was so wet from rain that most of the writing was illegible. The only part he could read said "Come back home." Nowadays, we have airships and stuff, but back then, it was really hard to travel. He didn't know why he had to go back, but he got some time off, gathered his things, and set out on his journey home. He walked a thousand leagues through the Mist. Sometimes he was attacked by vicious monsters, but he made it, because his friend Colin was by his side. And then, after much time on the road... He had to ask Colin something. "Why did you come with me?"

  • ...Oh yeah! You used to live next door to me. How's it going...Ratchel? Man, you've really gotten...big.

Princess Garnet Til Alexandros / Dagger

Unpaid
Role assigned to: Glyph

Character Description
Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, alias Dagger, is the deuteragonist of Final Fantasy IX, and the heir of Alexandria in the 17th generation. Garnet notices a change in her mother, Queen Brahne, and seeks to escape Alexandria Castle. Hiding her identity while traveling with Zidane, Garnet takes the alias Dagger, inspired by Zidane's weapon. Initially polite and soft-spoken, and naive to the world outside her castle, Garnet loosens up during her travels, and becomes more streetwise. She resolves to use her powers as a summoner to protect her kingdom, and becomes more assertive and less dependent on others for help.

Garnet has a love for learning both from books and from the people and world around her. She loves theater, Lord Avon's I Want to Be Your Canary being her favorite play.

She starts as self-deprecating and blames herself for events beyond her control, relying on others, but she wants the power to summon eidolons so she can better defend her kingdom and her companions. Through Zidane's influence, Garnet learns to act in a more commonplace way, and endeavors to "blend in". She changes her speech patterns from overly formal to more casual, and as Zidane teaches her more about the outside world, she falls in love with him.

Garnet can be naive due to her sheltered childhood, for example, she is shocked at some of the more unwholesome sights at Treno. Garnet is quick-thinking and finds ways to outwit others to pursue her goals, and eventually matures into a more assertive individual who realizes that past does not need to constrain how she lives her life in the present.

Vocal Notes:
Voice Garnet with a blend of royal elegance, independence, and determination. We're looking for a lighter, higher pitched tone, not a deeper, mature tone.

Directorial Considerations:

- Consider your "Objective" within the scene. You don't have to make it complicated. What does your character want? What strategies is your character using to achieve it? What is getting in their way of achieving it? What does your character have to lose?

- Your audio must be devoid of sound reflection. Consider recording with a blanket, or inside a space where the microphone isn't picking up the bounciness of your recording.

- If you only have a British Dialect and are not confident in a North American Dialect, that is perfectly okay, as that will really bring support into the role.

- Lastly -- Consider your environment(s) and read between the lines. If you just record the audio as-is, there won't be much life to it. You don't want to wander off-script, but there is still a lot of flexibility that can be added to the dialog to acknowledge breathe life into your recording.

  • (British Dialect, Building Concern) At the Village of Dali, we saw numerous black mages. They looked like golems, controlled by some powerful magic. On top of that, they were being created under Alexandria's supervision. I don't know how they're related to Vivi, but if Mother is planning to use them for war...

  • (North American Dialect) I still can't remember everything. Some things are like they're shrouded in fog. But I do remember one thing... About ten years ago, an unbelievably huge hurricane hit this village. That's as far as I remember. That day, I...I was with my true mother on a little boat, far from the village. There's a cove behind Eiko's house, right? The boat I was on was just like the one there. It all came back to me when I heard that song on the boat.

  • (Dramatic, Emotional) You've always protected us. But you still don't understand that we looked out for you, too! We watched your back while you watched ours. And we believed in you the same way you believed in us! Just like you protected us... We want to protect you.

Character Description:

Vivi Ornitier, occasionally stylized as VIVI, or with the surname Orunitia, is a playable character in Final Fantasy IX. He is a black mage, differentiated from humans by having a black aura surrounding his visible outer skin, glowing yellow eyes, and the ability to cast magic.

Vivi appears at first to be gullible, clumsy, and shy, often stumbling over his speech lacking self-confidence. He is fearful of his powers, origins, and his own lifespan. Over time, he gains bravery and confidence, as well as a sense of right and wrong. Vivi befriends Zidane, who acts like an older brother to him, and resolves to use his magic to protect his new friends.

Vocal Tone:
Voice Vivi with a mix of innocence, curiosity, and a growing courage, showing his journey from shy and unsure to brave and determined.

Directorial Considerations:
- Consider your "Objective" within the scene. You don't have to make it complicated. What does your character want? What strategies is your character using to achieve it? What is getting in their way of achieving it? What does your character have to lose?

  • (Sorrowful) No... It's like... ...they don't even... ...see me at all... I tried... ...again and again... ...but... ...they won't even turn around.

  • (Reflecting to Himself) Mr. 288 told me that I understand what it means to live and to die... But it's only because I thought stopping was different from dying... I don't think I really understand what it means to live or to die. Where do we come from...? Do we go back there when we die...? If that's what it means to live... I wonder where I came from... Where will I end up when I die...? Why am I shaking? What is it I'm feeling...?

  • (Ridden with Guilt) Zidane... Did I do the right thing? It said that black mages are made from the Mist, right? When I thought about how other black mages were being made for war... I didn't want that to happen, no matter what. Now, there'll be no more new black mages. I think they'll all hate me.

Freya Crescent

Character Description:
Freya Crescent is a playable character from Final Fantasy IX. She is Burmecian, a race of anthropomorphic rats who live in two cities, Burmecia and Cleyra. She hails from Burmecia, but left several years ago in search of her lost love, Sir Fratley. Zidane meets her in Lindblum just before the Festival of the Hunt.

Freya is a skilled and powerful dragon warrior with a sharp mind, but her longing for her lost love burdens her. She is humble and friendly, as seen when she speaks to Eiko or Vivi. She can also joke around with Zidane, saying she will "kick his butt" in the pub in Lindblum because he's flirting with girls. As a dragon knight, she can put aside her doubts and join forces with others when necessary, even teaming up with her former enemy Beatrix at one point. Freya faces much tragedy yet holds out hope. She may appear to live in the past, ever hopeful she'll be reunited with Fratley, but actually chooses to live for the future, by sustaining memories of the past.

Vocal Tone:
Ideally, we would like a soft, deeper Irish dialect for Freya with a lot of emotional range. Your voice should be strong and loyal, with a touch of sadness, showing her bravery and the depth of her feelings for those she cares about.

Directional Considerations:
- Consider your "Objective" within the scene. You don't have to make it complicated. What does your character want? What strategies is your character using to achieve it? What is getting in their way of achieving it? What does your character have to lose?
- Your audio must be devoid of sound reflection. Consider recording with a blanket, or inside a space where the microphone isn't picking up the bounciness of your recording.

  • (Emotional, but with Layers) Sir Fratley, I... I have missed you so much... I began my search for you immediately after you left Burmecia. Where have you been all these years...? To what corners of the world have you traveled? My dear Fratley... I climbed the highest mountains only to hear rumors of your victories... I searched the deepest valleys only to find your footsteps. But I never found you. And in the end, I heard something... Something unbearable!

Eiko Carol

Character Description:
Eiko is spunky and snobbish, yet desperately lonely, having lived alone in Madain Sari with only moogles as her friends for most of her life. She develops a crush on Zidane Tribal and goes as far as to write a love letter to him, but snaps out of it after a while as her infatuation has more to do with not wanting to be alone than grown-up feelings. Eiko knows the world is vast, but is afraid to leave what she knows out of uncertainty and reverence for a promise she had made to her grandfather to not leave Madain Sari until her sixteenth birthday. Meeting Zidane and his friends allows Eiko to connect with the outside world and sparks a longing in her to leave Madain Sari and meet new people.

Vocal Tone:
For Eiko, mix a spunky and slightly bratty tone with her deep wish for family.

Directorial Considerations:
- Consider your "Objective" within the scene. You don't have to make it complicated. What does your character want? What strategies is your character using to achieve it? What is getting in their way of achieving it? What does your character have to lose?

Everyone...everyone was watching over the stone.

Character Description:
Quina has a childlike curiosity for the world and is always ready to explore new locations to find new tastes; when arriving at a new location, Quina is quick to smell and taste-test the local wildlife and cuisine to discover delicacies. The childlike curiosity is Quina's dominant personality trait, as they are delighted by the small things in life, and takes the journey as a learning experience. Quina can be reckless, such as when they jump head-first into the canal in Treno after thinking they spotted food down there.

Setbacks don't bother them much, and they are soon back on their feet ready for new experiences. Quina has great respect for Qus elder to them, and at first wants to journey with Zidane because their Master tells them to. In an optional event in Quan's Dwelling it is revealed that Quina is on their way to become an excellent gourmand because of their vivid imagination, and it is hinted Quina has already surpassed their Master in the ways of the gourmand.

Although it may seem that Quina is the least involved in the quest the heroes undertake, being more interested in food than world events and going off on their own numerous times to pursue their own interests, they do develop a bond to the party. Quina attempts to cheer Freya up en route to Burmecia, and assures Vivi—who worries not being human—that he is as human as anyone else in the world. Quina helps Eiko cook in Madain Sari, teaching her that cooking for friends is at the core of love for food. When Quina is paired with Zidane to go explore the Earth Shrine, they are happy to go with him even if knowing Zidane only took them because they were the one left over when everyone else already left, saying that leftovers are a good thing. In Pandemonium, Quina eagerly helps Steiner fight off a monster. Quina is once again hired as the head cook in Alexandria at the end of the game, showing that they and Garnet are friends.

Vocal Tone:
Your voice should be higher pitched with a tone that could be mistaken for either male or female. It should be playful and full of wonder and humor. Avoid sounding like Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars.

Kuja
closed
Unpaid
Role assigned to: Joe Goffeney

Character Description:
Kuja is narcissistic in contrast to Zidane's humility. Kuja has an ego to match his power, and he lets his pride rule his head. Kuja once chose to let Zidane live even if he had a chance to kill him to prove himself superior. After discovering his destiny as a mortal, Kuja's cultured personality turns into insanity, believing life should not be allowed to continue without him. His descent into insanity and rebellion against Garland stem from the fear of oblivion, as Garland intended to discard Kuja's soul in favor of a new Genome. He is unfazed by being wounded, shown when being attacked by Bahamut. He is courteous to Hildagarde Fabool during her captivity, but she is a person he does not consider to be a threat, and uses her as a captive audience to boast at.

Kuja uses his elegance to hide his insecurities, and deep down is conflicted over his existence. Kuja scorns the black mages he helped create, but also finds himself identifying with them. As explained in Final Fantasy IX Ultimania, Kuja never experienced childhood, and thus his emotional growth is stunted and he cannot use Trance. Kuja is initially unable to empathize with others or feel remorse for his actions. It appears that learning of his fate as a mortal and rebelling against this destiny allows Kuja to grow, as after losing his fight he comes to see at least some of the repercussions of his actions and to regret them. He acts kindly toward Zidane in their short exchange at the Iifa Tree, glad that Zidane's friends were able to escape.

Vocal Tone
For Kuja, aim for a tone that's confident, charming, and slightly mysterious, with a touch of elegance. Think smooth and controlled, but with an underlying intensity that hints at his complex emotions and ambitions. When he speaks, it's with precision and purpose, always with a bit of dramatic flair.

  • (Calculating) The weak lose their freedom to the strong. Such is the way of the strong. And it is the providence of nature that only the strong survive. That is why I needed strength. I learned of powers that would daunt even him...over ten years ago. Such a long time... Now my forces are ready to strike! Ahh... The suspense is terrible! So they've come this far, have they? Perfect. I'll warm up on them until the elephant-lady shows up.

  • (Challenging) Hmph. You honestly think you can beat me? Even if you do, Gaia's already doomed. Its assimilation by Terra has begun, and the Iifa Tree will incite a cataclysmic destruction of Gaia. It's all over for you and your friends. See. I win, either way.

  • (Raw, Resisting Fear) Blood... Hahahaha... Excellent, Bahamut! Power, mobility... You are truly the best! You even hurt me...a little. And you, Brahne... Your tragic role in this drama now comes to an end! I'm sure you'll enjoy the second act from your soul's hellish prison, since the stage will be your former home! The final act will take us away from Gaia, and I will kill my nemesis...with my own hand! Hahaha! Everything is according to plan.

Regent Cid Fabool IX
closed
Unpaid
cast offsite

Important Note
Do not say "Gwok" or "Ribbit". You need to envision throaty, creature-like sounds for this role.

Cid Fabool IX is a character in Final Fantasy IX. He is an aloof middle-aged man who rules Lindblum as its regent, having succeeded his father, Cid Fabool VIII. Cid acts as an ally to the party, aiding them in fighting Queen Brahne's aggression against the Mist Continent. He serves as a temporarily playable character during a short sequence, and as per tradition with Cids in the series, is the maker of several airships.

PERSONALITY

For Regent Cid, think of a leader who’s got the brains and the heart to guide a kingdom, but is currently stuck in the body of a tiny bug-like creature, which obviously doesn't help with the whole 'majestic ruler' vibe. He's wise, inventive, and genuinely cares about his people and his kingdom, Lindblum. Yet, here he is, trying to maintain his dignity and authority while also being, well, pretty adorable and sometimes comically frustrated with his situation.

VOCAL TONE
We're looking for someone who can seamlessly blend the wisdom and warmth of a respected leader with the slight, understandable frustration that comes from his unique situation as an oglop. The voice needs to be authoritative yet infused with a lightness that acknowledges the humor in his predicament, without ever becoming mocking. Imagine a dignified king who has found himself in the form of a bug, yet remains unflappably grounded and composed. His dialogue should feel natural and conversational, as if he's still running a kingdom and advising heroes. He's the kind of character who can address his subjects, offer sage advice, and then, in the next breath, lament his current inability to handle paperwork because of his bug hands—all with the same level of calm and presence. Voice Actors who can read storytelling narratives in a calming and soothing manner will be able to perform this role admirably.

ADDITIONAL NOTES ON DIRECTION:
- You need to be comfortable and flexible with live direction. If you require an exception or have a busy schedule, we are willing to accommodate.
- Your audio must be free from sound reflection. Some of our VAs navigate these challenges by either recording in a smaller space or draping a thick blanket over top of themselves and the microphone.
- Please refer to the character description, vocal tone, and directorial notes when auditioning for a role.
- Ensure that there is no background noise or noticeable distance between yourself and the microphone. The technical quality of your microphone and recording space is also being assessed.

  • Regent Cid: "Yes. Greetings, all . I am Cid Fabool, Regent of Lindblum. I knew it was you--I recognized your pendant's description; it's so much like my 'Falcon Claw.' I'm delighted to see you again, Garnet. You have truly become a fine lady. I, on the other hand..."

  • Regent Cid: "And it wasn't easy, mind you... But we've no time to celebrate ! I heard from two black mages that there's some kind of trap up ahead. They said you basically just have to turn them all on, whatever that means . Let's hurry!"

  • (Gwok and Ribbit can be said as-is here.) Regent Cid: "Finally... Ribbit! I'm human again! Gwok! Now I can concentrate on building Hilda Garde 3! ......"

Blank

Blank is a temporary player character in Final Fantasy IX. He is one of the members from Tantalus, and thus a Thief. He is Marcus's best friend, Marcus often calling him "Bro".

Profile

Blank is a young man with auburn hair and pale skin. He has unusual scars across his body where he's been seemingly patched up with darker skin tones, most notably over the left side of his face. Blank's red hair is spiked with a thick leather belt acting as a headband, which also covers the upper half of his face. He wears little clothing, with brown briefs, leather gloves with a fur trim, black boots, large leather belts around his torso and another slung across his body as a weapon holster, and a brown knee-pad on his right knee.

Personality

Blank is the brains of Tantalus. He is close to the other members, especially Marcus, his best friend. He's competitive towards Zidane and considers himself a "ladies' man". He is kind and quick to help out a person in need, selflessly rushing to rescue those in trouble, and patrolling the streets of Alexandria to make sure they are safe.

Vocal Tone:
For Blank, we need a mix of mystery and leadership. Your voice should carry authority and confidence, showing that Blank is a born leader, someone others naturally follow. At the same time, maintain a layer of secrecy and loyalty in your tone.

  • (Conniving): Fie! It shall be war again unless this marriage is stopped. Ne'er will I let their plan come to fruition." [He walks out from his hiding spot.] "Good day to ye, Highness.

  • I'll distract the audience from backstage with these little buggers. I can't stand oglops... But I'll manage, so don't worry about me. And that'll be your cue, Zidane!

Cinna

Cinna is a temporary playable character in Final Fantasy IX. He is a member of Tantalus Theater Troupe and thus a thief and an actor residing in Lindblum. He possesses the Unusual Potion item Zidane needs to further his quest.

Profile

Cinna has fairly clownish features, with a wide mouth and red nose. He has small, close-set yellow eyes, pointy ears and a black goatee. Cinna wears a brown ensemble consisting of a thick leather collar, cropped short-sleeved jacket which bares his protruding belly, wristbands, shorts (with the fly undone), boots, and what appears to be an off-white chef's hat.

Personality

Cinna has a passion for his hammer (which he lets no one else use), exotic coffee, and South Gate Bundt Cake. He is also skilled with machines. He does not take kindly to anyone poking fun at his appearance and cannot sleep at night without his Princess Garnet doll, as seen in a humorous ATE. As with the rest of Tantalus, he is a skilled actor and even goes out of his way to call Steiner a bad one.

Vocal Tone:
For Cinna, we're looking for warmth and creativity in your voice. Cinna is the heart of the group, someone who brings everyone together and inspires them. Think of blending a supportive, almost parental warmth with the spark of an artist seeing the potential in everything around them.

  • It should be here somewhere. Huh...? Damn! Where is it!? What happened to my Garnet doll!? Man. How am I supposed to sleep now...? Geez... Poor little doll... The fire probably caught it.

  • ...... I... I missed it again... How many times have I missed it? It's morning now... But it isn't my fault! It's the South Gate Bundt Cake! It's so delicious...I just can't stop! When will the next car to Lindblum arrive...?

  • Fortune hath escap'd thee! For what end shalt thou live?

Zorn & Thorn

Zorn and Thorn are non-player characters from Final Fantasy IX. They are twins who serve as Queen Brahne's court jesters and mages. They look nearly identical and wear similar clothing. Zorn is the older of the two,[citation needed] and wears blue, while Thorn wears red. In the game's English translation, Zorn and Thorn speak in an antimetabole speech pattern using the same words to reply to each other but in active and passive form. For example, Zorn would say, "Are you sure of this?" while Thorn would say, "Sure of this, are you?". In the Japanese version Zorn finishes his sentences with o-ja'ru and Thorn with go-ja'ru, which is an old type of dialect not used in modern speech. In the Spanish version, Zorn ends his lines with pífate, while Thorn ends them with páfate, simple verbal tics that have no meaning.

Profile

Zorn and Thorn wear jester hats with bells, collared jackets and buttoned up shirts in blue and red respectively. Their jackets, color aside, are slightly different, as Zorn has a spade and a club suit on his left and right arm respectively, and Thorn has a heart and a diamond suit. While Zorn's blue makeup curves over his brow and nose in thin lines, Thorn's makeup colors his eyes in red, with a red circle above each eye. Their lips are of their respective colors, and both their faces are painted white. Their red and blue apparel may refer to the twin moons (their theme music also sometimes being referred to as the "Jesters of the Moon"), and by extension, the planets Gaia and Terra.

Personality
Zorn and Thorn are over-dramatic and panicky, resorting to running around mindlessly when something goes wrong, and one always follows the other. They speak with exclamation, shouting at each other and proclaiming the other is wrong. They are sycophants that court those in power and, despite their childish behavior, are loyal to those they serve. Zorn and Thorn can act cowardly in times of danger and flee.

Additional Information
In an old development memo Hironobu Sakaguchi wrote to draft the Final Fantasy IX opening sequence he has later shared online, Zorn and Thorn are not two individual people, but, rather, their role is taken by a single tall old mage called "Zorn". The queen is enjoying the play Tantalus Theater Troupe is putting on, and Zorn approaches her on the balcony where she is seated, but is stopped by "Lieutenant Steiner" who leads a guard of paladins for the queen's protection. Zorn says he has special permission to be let through and indicates to the queen he has urgent news. The queen waives him through and Zorn relays that Princess Garnet has taken the "stone of Leviathan" and a soldier handed it to her because she said that the queen had asked her to get it. The queen says she never asked it, and the mage's follower comes and informs the princess is nowhere in the castle.

Vocal Tone:
For Zorn and Thorn, we're aiming for a really dynamic duo vibe. You two are like two sides of the same coin, finishing each other's sentences and playing off each other's energy. Zorn, your voice should be slightly higher, more erratic, reflecting your excitable and unpredictable nature. Thorn, contrast that with a lower, more deliberate tone, showing your more grounded, but equally cunning personality.

  • Zorn: "We are in trouble!" Thorn: "Trouble we are in!" Zorn: "This is terrible!" Thorn: "Our heads, Queen Brahne will have!" Zorn: "We must hurry!" Thorn: "Hurry, we must!"

Important Note:
You must record this with a Southern North American Dialect.

Ruby is a minor character in Final Fantasy IX. She is an actress in Tantalus Theater Troupe and is the only female of the group. She plays the lead heroine in Tantalus's production of the famous play I Want to Be Your Canary.

Profile

Ruby wears a low-cut white blouse with short sleeves. Her hourglass figure is cinched in by a brown corset-like belt. Short green panels grace the sides of her teal, asymmetrical skirt. She wears opaque white tights, pink shoes, short white gloves with brown ribbons, and a brown choker. Her hair is gray, but much of it is covered by a large, light blue bandana.

Personality

When left behind by the rest of the troupe, Ruby shows off her entrepreneurial nature by founding a mini theater. The other Tantalus members fear her scolding and work behind her back to escape her temper. Still, the Tantalus members begin their adventure while cheerfully leaving Ruby behind, briefly forgetting all about her. She would personally be happier if the troupe would just be actors and not thieves, but she still does her best to cheer up anyone who needs it. In the English localization, Ruby has a strong North American southern accent. In the Japanese version, she speaks with an Osaka-ben dialect. In the Italian version, she has a Spanish accent. In the German translation, she speaks a Cologne dialect, and in Spanish, she has an Argentine dialect.

Vocal Tone:
For Ruby, we need the voice to be full of life and determination. Ruby is the kind of character who wears her heart on her sleeve, passionate about her beliefs and fiercely loyal to her friends. Your tone should be energetic and enthusiastic.
