Set years before the events of Metal Gear Solid during the Cold War, Metal Gear follows Solid Snake in his first mission, led by his master Big Boss. After learning that a group of mercenaries has captured a weapon of mass destruction, the US government enlists the Spec Ops group FOXHOUND to learn about its contents. The FOXHOUND leader Big Boss sends rookie Solid Snake to rescue one of their agents from imprisonment and learn the identity of the weapon. The only knowledge of the weapon is its name...Metal Gear. Along the way, Snake meets friendly faces and foes alike. Unknown to Snake, the leader of the band of mercenaries is closer to him than he believes.

Solid Snake is a rookie operative, based within the spec ops group FOXHOUND. His commanding officer is Big Boss, who along with Colonel Campbell, supply him with the information needed to infiltrate Outer Heaven.

The legendary soldier of the battlefield, Big Boss. The Boss is the commanding officer of the FOXHOUND unit and the one who helps guide Solid Snake through Outer Heaven. Big Boss is very patriotic and is shown to love his country with a heavy heart. The Boss shows a trait of a loyal commander and one who people look up to.
You're the only one I can trust, Snake.

One of the many mentors of Solid Snake and Big Boss's vice commander in FOXHOUND. Campbell is most prominent when Big Boss is not around to guide Snake during his infiltration mission. Campbell is also helpful in researching information about individuals in the compound.

One of the top agents in FOXHOUND originally sent to investigate the Outer Heaven Uprising. After a duel with Shalashaska (Ocelot), Gray Fox was captured. He was able to send out the signal relaying the words 'Metal Gear' before his capture.
