Mayday

Mayday

Project Overview

At its core, Mayday is about Michael Weller, an ordinary musician whose already-messy life gets completely derailed when reality starts behaving wrong.

He loses his job, struggles to get his life together, and then begins encountering strange glitches and phenomena that reveal something much bigger is happening. Eventually, he's pulled into other dimensions and discovers that the universe is far stranger than he ever imagined.

But Mayday isn't just "a guy who travels through dimensions." The bigger story is about:

  • Michael trying to find his place in a universe he doesn't understand

  • Different worlds and societies with completely different rules

  • Characters who aren't necessarily what they appear to be

  • The conflict between humans, demons, gods, and other beings

  • Friendship, trust, grief, ambition, and loneliness

  • How ordinary people can become involved in things far beyond them

  • And eventually, Michy and the larger mystery behind the dimensions

The really important part is that Mike starts as an ordinary dude. He isn't secretly the chosen one with twelve divine bloodlines. He's just some struggling musician who gets thrown into something enormous.

That's honestly one of the things that makes Mayday work. The audience discovers this bizarre universe through Mike, instead of being handed a 40-minute mythology lecture in episode one.

And the title Mayday works nicely because it can evoke a distress call, which fits Mike's life pretty damn well.

Latest Updates

  • ROLE UPDATE: LIN WATANABE

I've updated Lin’s voice direction to better reflect his actual personality!

If you’ve already auditioned for Lin and would like to resubmit your audition, you’re absolutely welcome to. Your original audition is still valid, so this is completely optional!

The updated direction focuses more on Lin’s dreamer personality, confidence, humor, and emotional range. He isn’t supposed to sound angry or intimidating 24/7..

So if your first audition leaned more serious or emotionless because of the previous description, feel free to give it another shot and show off more of Lin’s personality!

No pressure to resubmit. Your original audition will still be considered!

  • IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

    Hey everyone!

I wanted to let everyone know that I’ll be taking a temporary break from working on Mayday due to some personal circumstances.

Because of this, the project will be paused for the time being, including reviewing submissions and moving forward with production. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has taken the time to audition, apply, or show interest in the project so far. We’ve received around 35 submissions, which honestly means a lot to me.

I don’t have a specific date for when production will resume, but I’ll make another announcement when I’m ready to continue.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding. Mayday isn’t cancelled, just taking a little break. ❤️ but I’m not saying you can’t audition I’m just not gonna be online for a little while

  • I need a VA for Macy Kioko

I’m currently looking for a voice actress for Macy Kioko in my indie animated project, Mayday.

Macy is shy, kind, respectful, and soft-spoken, but she becomes brave and determined when the people she cares about are in danger. I’m looking for a warm, youthful voice that can portray both her gentle personality and her more emotional moments.

Previous voice acting experience is welcome, but beginners are encouraged to audition as well!

Name: Lin Watanabe
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Role: Demon Overlord / Major Character

Personality:
Lin is confident, ambitious, intelligent, and determined. He's a natural dreamer who genuinely believes in his ambitions and the future he wants to create. Despite his position and intimidating reputation, Lin isn't constantly serious or angry. He can be charismatic, sarcastic, stubborn, playful, and surprisingly goofy, especially around people he trusts.

He has a softer side that doesn't come out often, but when it does, his voice should be able to show genuine warmth and vulnerability.

Voice Direction:
Male, young-adult sounding, with a medium-low pitch rather than an extremely deep voice.

His natural voice should feel calm, confident, conversational, and mature. He doesn't need to sound intimidating all the time. In fact, Lin is often more intimidating when he's quiet and controlled rather than when he's yelling.

The actor should be comfortable letting Lin's personality come through. He can be charming, excited about his ambitions, sarcastic, amused, annoyed, or genuinely goofy. When the situation becomes serious, however, his voice should be able to become colder and more threatening without becoming overly dramatic.

Looking For:

  • Strong vocal presence

  • Natural, conversational delivery

  • Confident and charismatic tone

  • Dry humor and comedic timing

  • Ability to sound genuinely excited and ambitious

  • Emotional range and subtle vulnerability

  • Controlled delivery during serious scenes

  • Ability to become threatening without yelling

  • A voice that can shift naturally between goofy, warm, serious, and intimidating

Avoid:
An overly deep or booming voice, exaggerated “villain” delivery, constant anger, or a completely emotionless/monotone performance.

Most importantly: Lin should sound like a person with dreams, flaws, humor, and emotions, not just an intimidating demon overlord.

PS: Please don't make him sound like Shadow the Hedgehog. We already have enough unhappy meals in this world.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Cleaning and editing voice recordings

  • Mixing dialogue, music, and sound effects

  • Creating or editing sound effects

Background Designer

Role: Background Designer / Environment Artist

Description:
I'm looking for a background designer to help create the environments and locations of Mayday. The series takes place across different locations and dimensions, so backgrounds can range from ordinary human environments to strange, fantastical, and unsettling places.

The backgrounds should support the characters and storytelling without distracting from them. I'm looking for someone who can make environments feel interesting, lived-in, and consistent with the show's visual style.

Looking for:

  • Strong 2D environment and background art skills

  • Good understanding of perspective and composition

  • Ability to create both realistic and stylized environments

  • Strong sense of lighting and atmosphere

  • Ability to design interiors and exteriors

  • Comfortable creating ordinary locations as well as fantasy/dimensional environments

  • Able to follow an established art direction

  • Good communication and willingness to collaborate

Style:
Cartoon / stylized 2D / expressive environments. The style should feel compatible with Mayday and its character designs without becoming overly anime or hyper-realistic.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Designing backgrounds for scenes

  • Designing interiors, streets, buildings, landscapes, and dimensional locations

  • Creating background layouts and establishing shots

  • Developing environmental details that help tell the story

Audition:
Please provide a portfolio or a few examples of your background/environment artwork. Both finished backgrounds and sketches are welcome.

Producer

Role: Producer / Production Coordinator

Description:
I'm looking for a producer to help organize and coordinate the development of Mayday, an independent animated series.

The producer would help keep track of the project's progress, coordinate with different members of the team, organize deadlines and tasks, and help make sure everyone knows what they are working on.

This is a collaborative role. I'm looking for someone who can help turn the ideas and creative work behind Mayday into an organized production without taking control of the creative vision.

Looking for:

  • Strong organization and communication skills

  • Good time-management skills

  • Ability to keep track of multiple tasks and team members

  • Comfortable coordinating with artists, writers, animators, voice actors, and audio workers

  • Ability to create realistic schedules and deadlines

  • Good problem-solving skills

  • Reliable and communicative

  • Understanding of animation or indie production is preferred

Audition:
Please provide examples of projects you've helped organize or explain how you would approach organizing an independent animated project with multiple artists and departments.

Estimated Workload:
The workload will vary depending on the stage of production. This is primarily a coordination and organization role rather than a full-time creative position.

Important:
The producer will collaborate closely with the creator and other team members. The role is to help organize and support the production, not override the creator's creative decisions.

Please include your expected rate, availability, and the type of workload you are comfortable handling.

  • Good understanding of melody, rhythm, and instrumentation

  • Comfortable taking creative direction and feedback

  • Ability to deliver clean, usable audio files
