Background Designer

Role: Background Designer / Environment Artist

Description:
I'm looking for a background designer to help create the environments and locations of Mayday. The series takes place across different locations and dimensions, so backgrounds can range from ordinary human environments to strange, fantastical, and unsettling places.

The backgrounds should support the characters and storytelling without distracting from them. I'm looking for someone who can make environments feel interesting, lived-in, and consistent with the show's visual style.

Looking for:

• Strong 2D environment and background art skills

• Good understanding of perspective and composition

• Ability to create both realistic and stylized environments

• Strong sense of lighting and atmosphere

• Ability to design interiors and exteriors

• Comfortable creating ordinary locations as well as fantasy/dimensional environments

• Able to follow an established art direction

• Good communication and willingness to collaborate

Style:
Cartoon / stylized 2D / expressive environments. The style should feel compatible with Mayday and its character designs without becoming overly anime or hyper-realistic.

Responsibilities may include:

• Designing backgrounds for scenes

• Creating environments based on descriptions or storyboards

• Designing interiors, streets, buildings, landscapes, and dimensional locations

• Creating background layouts and establishing shots

• Developing environmental details that help tell the story

• Keeping locations visually consistent between scenes

Experience:
Beginner and aspiring artists are welcome to audition! Professional experience isn't required. I'm more interested in seeing your ability to create appealing environments and work with an established style.

Audition:
Please provide a portfolio or a few examples of your background/environment artwork. Both finished backgrounds and sketches are welcome.

Estimated Workload:
The workload will depend on the episode and number of locations. Artists may work on individual backgrounds or groups of related environments rather than being expected to create every background for the entire series.
