Majora's Mask: Manga Dub

Project Overview

Hello everyone and welcome to the official casting call for The Legend of Zelda - Majora's Mask: Manga Dub. Whether you came here from the teaser on my YouTube channel, heard about it through the grapevine or just stumbled in on accident, we are so excited to have you here! If you're one of the latter and have no idea what this is all about, allow me to explain. 
The Legend of Zelda franchise is beloved by fans worldwide, and stretches across many different platforms and media. One of its lesser known outlets is that of the Manga (Japanese comics) based off the events of various games. While the events that take place within the pages of this manga are technically not canon, they still share valuable insight into the world of Zelda and sheds light on a great many secrets that had previously remained hidden. 
So, why does all this matter? Essentially, with the help of voice actors, editors, and support from all of you, we will be bringing the story of Majora's Mask (as told in the manga) to life. This will be done through music, sound effects, visuals and voice. The series will take place over a series of nine episodes, each covering a chapter of the manga. While I don't have a set time in place yet, optimistically production will begin two weeks after casting and an episode will see its release every 1 - 2 months.
If you'd like a better look into what this dub will essentially look like, some colleagues and I put together a similar video a few months ago for another project that uses techniques almost identical to what will be used in Majora's Mask. For those of you who are interested in auditioning, there are a few rules that you are required to follow in order to be considered for a role. Please read through them carefully.

1. PLEASE have a decent microphone. I don't doubt that each and every one of you has what it takes to be in this dub, but I cannot know that if I cannot hear you! You do not need to have a top-of-the line recording device. Heck, you can even record on your phone if you'd like. But I need to be able to understand you and have as little background noise as possible. 

2. You are allowed to use vocal effects and/or accents when auditioning. It will likely not be the deciding factor in my casting choice, but you are welcome to include them if you like. 

3. Read the character descriptions! I wrote them in for a reason. They will help you get a better feel for the character, so use it your advantage.

4. Upvotes don't mean anything. They are merely a means to show support for your fellow actors and will not sway my decision when it comes time to cast. You could have the most shoutouts or no shoutouts at all and it would not matter either way.

5. There are some adult themes present throughout the series. This includes the use the use of alcohol and mild language. If you are uncomfortable with either of these, please contact me or refrain from auditioning entirely. 

6. You are allowed to audition for as many characters as you like, but please realize that if you do this you are committing yourself to the possibility of multi-casting, or being cast as multiple characters. 

7. (I shouldn't have to say this but just in case): Refrain from discussing sensitive issues such as politics or religion in the comments section and spamming. These will be met with a verbal warning before your chances of being cast are terminated. If you are caught bullying or harassing another actor or anyone else involved with the project, you will be permanently barred from the project without exception. This will not be tolerated. I encourage feedback and constructive criticism, but please be mindful of what you are saying to your fellow actors. 

8. If you are not cast, never fear! There will be understudies for each role, which will be posted in an update. Any and all updates will henceforth be in the same place. 

9. If you'd like to re-audition, please message me or post your request in the comments. 

10. Have fun! I won't enforce this, obviously, but remember that this is being created by fans for fans, so I do hope that you enjoy yourselves, regardless of the outcome.

    It’s been a long time coming, but the results are in! I didn’t expect to see this much talent in one place, so the casting process was certainly no picnic.   • Midway Update

    Hello all! I can hardly believe it but we're nearly halfway through the casting call! I just wanted to post a couple notices for future references. 1. Thank you to all who have auditioned. Please continue to spread the word so that we can pull together even more submissions! 2. Everyone, PLEASE CHOOSE A SITE. What I mean by this is please, from this moment on, do not submit an audition from both BTVA and CCC (or some other third party). This is purely for simplicity's sake and so I can keep track of all the auditions. I will not be removing those currently posted, but if it becomes an issue I will have to start rejecting some auditions :( 3. A tumblr page will go up tomorrow for any VA's who use the site. I might allow some extra leeway since it's going up so late (been in Alaska for a week), but no more than a week while I'm already in the progress of choosing the finalists. A legendary hero in the form of a young boy, Link is searching for a long-lost friend before finding himself in the doomed land of Termina. The fate of the world rests on his shoulders, and he has only three repeating days to put an end to the suffering that has plagued Terimina, using everything he has learned in his adventures and more. Despite his extensive combat training and experience, Link is rather simpleminded and even a bit dull at times, making rash and untimely decisions. Nevertheless, the hero of time has a heart of gold, acute modesty, and a burning determination, everything he needs to save the world. I've included a demo for Link that can be used for reference. I know a lot of people use very rough, scratchy voices when voicing young boys. Please try to avoid this in order to give it a fuller, more genuine tone. Link is heard the most in this story, so I need someone who won't make ears bleed. Oh, and one more thing: Link talks.

  • *sigh* Had to use the Ocarina of Time again. I don't like to use it much, but...how else will people know who I am? After all, who's going believe the word of some kid...?

After Link first encounters the Skullkid, he is transformed into a Deku scrub. 
In this form, he has no weapons (save for the Power of bubbles), and is far more vulnerable in every sense of this world. This makes even the hero of time a bit twitchy and nervous, tripping over his words and stuttering frequently. But even in a weaker form, Link still perseveres with courage and heart, searching for a way to return to normal. As an inhuman creature, Deku Link's voice is inhumanly high and nasally, much more so than his regular voice. I am alright with voices being pitched up a bit to meet these standards, but not so much that it's overtly obvious.

  • (Angry, demanding) Alright then, Tatl. Where's Skullkid? And what've you done to Epona?

  • (Panicked) It's no use! I...I can't stop this!

  • It'll be ok. I'm sure he'll come back. Who could break a promise to a girl as kind and pretty as you?

Link's faithful, albeit bitter companion throughout his adventures in Termina. While starting out as a lackey to the Skullkid, Tatl's attitude towards life begins to soften after her separation from her brother. Pushy, rude and quick to anger, Tatl nonetheless has a maternal connection towards her younger brother and, eventually, Link. Her confidence tends to make her look down on others, but she does have the capacity to be vulnerable. Not looking for any voice in particular, so long as its more high pitched than not.

  • Hey, you! It's YOUR fault I got separated from my brother! So how're you gonna fix that, huh? (Worried) Ohhh, Tael...what're you gonna do without me?

  • Geez, for a hero you sure do complain a lot...

  • Hey, y'know what? ...you're alright, kid.

The younger, more credulous of the two fairy siblings, Tael has been roped into a friendship with the now corrupted Skullkid and is unable to escape. Emotionally and physically abused by the Skullkid, Tael nonetheless recognizes his need for a friend, and sympathizes with him despite his wicked actions. He looks up to his older sister, whom he admires despite their sibling rivalries. Looking for a very youthful and innocent voice full of curiosity and largely unaware of the horrors unfolding around him.

  • Wait, Sis! Don't be so hard on the Skullkid. It...It wasn't his fault.

A mischievous imp turned menacing under the influence of Majora's Mask. He has a habit of taking pranks a little too far, his latest being that of brining the moon down on Termina. Still, most of his mischief stems from his loneliness and lack of friendship, donning the mask in hopes of being listened to. While wearing the mask, Skullkid is jeering and cold, completely unfazed by the suffering his tricks cause people. At his center, he is merely a petulant child torn apart by the loss of his friends and the scorn he faces on a day-to-day basis. 

  • Well, aren't you persistent? You really think you can win against me? You fool...

  • (In his natural state, shy but happy) They said they didn't forget about me. That we'd always be friends...that's why they came to save me. Heh, heh...friends are a nice thing to have.

  • *2 mocking laughs, 1 demented, ear-splitting scream*

The main antagonist of Majora's Mask. A formless, shapeless demon with a lust for destruction, Majora is hellbent on bringing the world to ruin in just three days using the Skullkid as a puppet. It has no conscience, and is the very embodiment of evil and chaos. It often takes the form and dialect of a child, upping the creep factor by about nine thousand percent. It also takes on three different personas in its final battle. Unlike Link, I'm ok with ears bleeding on this one. Make it sound bestial, ancient, all the bad. The voice should be as far from human as possible, while still being audible, whatever that means to you. I'm open to multiple interpretations. Definitely encourage vocal effects, though it's not required.

  • (First form) *short shriek of pain morphs into morbid laughter* heeheehee...now you've done it...

  • (Second Form) *erratic, almost breathless, punctuated by insane laughter* C'mon! C'mon! What're you waiting for?! Catch me! Catch me!! CATCH ME!!!

  • (Third form) *On the verge of tears, screaming like an enraged child but growing deeper and deeper, ending in a dissonant roar* Stop it! Meanie!! Meanie!! You're...ruining...my...GAME!!!

Happy Mask Salesman

Creepy. Shady. Subdued. Erratic. All of these would be accurate terms to describe the infamous Happy Mask Salesman. This silver-tongued salesman peddles his wares all over the world, supposedly bringing happiness wherever he goes. 
When his most prized possession, the cursed Mask of Majora, is stolen by the Skullkid, The Happy Mask Salesman tasks Link with returning it to him in just three days to save the world...or perhaps for some other, some sinister purpose. Not much else is known about the charismatic Salesman or his motives, suffice it to say that he is definitely up to something, and it's probably not good. Looking for a smooth, almost inhuman voice to hide his explosive temper, essentially managing to be both reassuring and unsettling at the same time.

  • *Ominous chuckle* You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

  • Well, since you asked...while it can grant wishes, it also...POSSES A DREADFUL POWER! IT IS AN EVIL MASK, A MASK OF DEVILS!!! ...ohhh, dear. How could I let something like that slip? That was supposed to be a secret to everyone...!

  • You, who have traversed time itself...believe in your strengths. Believe.

The daughter of Clock Town's only innkeeper, Anju is kindhearted woman who has dedicated herself to maintaining the family business and caring for both her guests and immediate family. She was to be married to her one true love, had it not been for his disappearance just days before the wedding. In the face of impending doom, Anju keeps her chin up and always thinks optimistically, even in doubt. What she lacks in culinary skill, she makes up for in compassion. Not looking for any particular voice, so long as it conveys Anju's meek but maternal nature.

  • This is the Stock Pot Inn...the only Inn in clocktown.

  • Kafei?! Do you know him? Is he safe? Please, tell me now!

  • It's alright now. We'll greet tomorrow together.

The son of Termina's mayor, Kafei is a man torn from his bride-to-be by way of one of Skullkid's pratictical jokes. Under the influence of a curse, Kafei appears as a child, but keeps the mentality of an adult. As such, this gives him intelligence and resourcefulness beyond his years. While generally somber and even cynical at times, Kafei's love for Anju is genuine, and he would do anything to return their lives to the way they were. He wears a keaton mask to hide his true identity. While I am looking for a younger-sounding voice, I would appreciate it if a more mature tone and attitude were applied to the character. Remember, there's a full-grown guy in there.

  • Just a kid...you're right. I was changed into this by a demon wearing a mask.

  • It's all just a game to him. But what about ME? How DARE he mess with people's lives like this! I can't forgive him! I won't!!

  • Anju...I'm sorry I'm late.

The true form of the aforementioned Kafei. Kafei appears only briefly as an adult, insults Skullkid in his drunken state and garners a curse respectively. While Kafei is well-meaning, the imp merely caught him at a bad time, and he will have to go through hell and back to prove his love for Anju.

The stern owner of the Stock Pot Inn. Anju's mother is no-nonsense and all business, struggling to keep her customers and her senile mother in check. She is one of the few residents who is genuinely concerned about the fate of their town, and is often distressed over Anju's refusal to find shelter in pursuit of her missing husband. Her concern for the safety of her family shows through her stubborn exterior.

  • (Exasperated) Really, Anju! We must close the Inn and take refuge! Now hurry up and pack your things.

  • Is this about Kafei? Anju, please, give it up already! He's not coming back...!

  • (Coldly) I'm sorry. We are taking refuge now.

Your typical village crazy lady. Anju's grandmother has a lot to say about the events unfolding around her, and while some of her senses may have aged with her, her inane ramblings contain more wisdom than one would think. She shares vital insight into the story of Skullkid and the Giants. Grandma speaks with a creaky, ancient voice and sometimes makes little sense while doing so.

  • Oh, I thought all the children knew the story of the Giants. No matter. I will tell it the way it has always been told...

  • Hold on, young man. When the Giants left, there was someone who was saddened to see them go. Who do you think that was?

  • So to summon them, all you have to do is call out (suddenly shouting) HELP ME!!! to the Giants-

The princess of Hyrule and Link's childhood friend makes a VERY brief cameo in the manga by way of a flashback. Despite this, she is still an influential character who reminds Link of the capabilities of the Ocarina of Time, and that he is never truly alone. Looking for a youthful, clear voice without sounding too strained or squeaky. Zelda may be young, but she can get things done and is more than capable of lending a hand in the downfall of evil.

  • The Ocarina of Time will be safer in your hands. I'm sure it will come in handy during your travels, Link.

  • The goddess of time is protecting you. If you are ever in need, play the song of time, and she will carry you back to safety. When you play this song...I hope you will think of me.

Woodfall's monarch and the king of its denizens. Known for his short temper and over protective nature when it comes to parenting, the Deku King flies into a rage at the disappearance of his daughter, the Deku Princess. In his anger, he blindly lashes out, taking several of Woodfall's creatures as hostages and threatening to boil them alive for answers they don't have. While undoubtedly pompous and ignorant of the pleas of his people, the king only wants to see his daughter again, and will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. I don't really have a preference on this one. I could see it going either way: nasally like Deku Link or deep and booming. Just portray him however you think he'd sound. Surprise me!

  • All right, which one of you kidnapped the princess? Confess or you shall burn!!

  • So YOU'RE the one who kidnapped my daughter! You shall pay for your crimes!!

  • PRINCESS!! Oh, my darling princess! I was so worried!

The Deku Princess

The voice of reason to her father's madness, the Deku Princess goes missing after traveling to Woodfall Temple in attempt to stem the flow of poison polluting her home. Level-headed and beloved by the citizens of Woodfall, the Deku Princess is perpetually embarrassed by her father's actions, and is not afraid to publicly scold him for them. She may or may not have a major crush on Link. Regardless of if you decide to make her voice sound nasally or not, make sure it can be authoritative, if not terrifying.

  • YOU IDIOT! What were you thinking?! You've done nothing but cause trouble since the moment I went missing! Don't think I didn't see what you've done!

  • Mr. Link, I'm so sorry for all the trouble you've had to go through. I really must thank you: Because of you, Woodfall has been saved, (clearly addressing her father) and maybe now my father will think about what he's done and learn to be a good king for a change.

  • (Meekly) Could you...could you perhaps put on the mask...one last time? *after seeing Deku Link* (tearfully, breaking into a sob as she runs away) P-Please take care...!

A footman to the Deku King, the Deku Butler tries his best to quell his king's rage. While his servitude makes him far humbler than the royal family, the Deku Butler is also far more sagely than his master, not to mention reasonable. He once had a son who disappeared before the events of the Manga.

  • Your Highness, please! We don't have time for interrogations. We must dispatch a search party to find your daughter!

  • (On his knees, distraught) Ohhh, won't somebody save us?!

  • When you wear that mask, you remind her of my son. He's been gone for...a long time.

A group of convenient monkeys who save Link on his way to Woodfall. Several of their brethren have been falsely accused of kidnapping the Deku Princess, and they require the hero's aid to rescue them from the palace. The false god of Woodfall. Odolwa is the monster behind the oppression of the swamp and the capture of the Deku Princess. He speaks with a booming, monstrous voice and wields a deadly sword and shield.

The champion of Snowhead Mountain. Darmani appears to Link as a specter, as he perished trying to stop the monstrous Goht. He was revered by the people of his village, and held a special bond with the elder's son, who looked up to him as a second father. 
IMPORTANT: Goron Link will be voiced by the same actor cast as Darmani, albeit with a slight variation. Because Link sings the Goron Lullaby to the Elder's Son, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SING.

It is implied that he may have had romantic feelings for Lulu, the band's vocalist.
