Lost At Sea - A Comic Dub

Lost At Sea - A Comic Dub

Project Overview

Lost at Sea is a coming-of-age story about a shy 18-year-old girl named Raleigh, who believes her soul was stolen by a cat, and the road trip she takes across the United States with several teens from her school that she barely knows.

Hello! My name is Ethan a.k.a Mr EMC, the sole runner of EMC Pictures and the director and editor of Kick-Ass: The Comic Dub. Lost at Sea is one of my favorite graphic novels due to how relatable it is and I want to bring it to life using the skills I have. and the talented people around me.  If you haven't, please give the book a quick read before auditioning so your grasp on the character is deeper than the description I gave.

Note: This graphic novel consists of the use of cigarettes. plenty of swear words, and teenage problems.

Just a quick guide. Raleigh is going to be pronounced "Ray-Lee". I do not care if that's technically incorrect. It sounds the best like that.

This is an unpaid, non-profit project that I making for myself.

Raleigh has no soul but that does not mean she is apathetic. She is a very anxious and scared person, admitting that she is terrified of everything early on in the book. She has some problems with conversation, sometimes just saying whats on her mind, rather seriously I might add. Numerous times she has said a statement that was serious in her mind, but it ends being met with laughter from her peers, who believed it was a joke.

She has a hint of cynicism towards the world, questioning the point of things sometimes considering all that she has lost. She's lost her soul, her best friend, and the love of her life, all by the hand of fate.

She is a teenager that is dealing with possibly a little too much that she can handle in a very bad way.

Raleigh talks a LOT through the entirety of this graphic novel. 75 percent of it is her monologuing.

  • The first thing I need to get out of the way is that I have no soul.

  • (In Love) You. Him. Stillman. Your name is Stillman. When I was with you, I was perfect.

  • (Conversational) Sometimes it's good not to give your money to someone other than "the man".

Stephanie on the outside is seen to be a stereotypical teenage girl. She is loud, semi-obnoxious, quick-witted, and very very open about her thoughts and opinions. However, Stephanie definitely has the capacity to be real. To be sincere. To be calm. To be very supportive towards her friends.

A word that would define Stephanie's character entirely is unafraid. When shit gets rough, she is unafraid of what is on her mind. She will say it, she will believe it and she'll try her damndest to make YOU believe it.

  • (Just a hint of cynicism) I'll never be beautiful like you and your hideously perfect kind. Anyway, of course you hate being tall. That's how it works, Raleigh.

  • (Sincerity is showing) Look at you- god, half an hour past your life's great trauma and you're stuck in a car with three crazy assholes you hardly know? You're dealing with a lot. A LOT.

  • (Loud) What is on the radio?? What the fuck is this!?

Dave Weldon is a man who embodies "Go with the Flow". He is a very ambivalent, apathetic person who is very honest about his thoughts and opinions, similar to Stephanie.

He is completely willing to correct a fallacy that he detects in literally anything, whether it be logical or grammatical. He has tendencies to attempt to defend himself when he is being questioned and he definitely is defensive when it comes to his personal life, specifically his ex-girlfriend.

  • You don't have to be sorry, Raleigh. Smoking is fucking stupid. I'm the one who should be sorry, right?

  • (Snarky) I guess we should have studied harder in that class on how to be men.

  • (Honesty kicking in) She always struck me as one of those people who's really...self contained faraway.

Ian Taylor is the more masculine side of sterotypical teenager. He is very prideful of himself and his ideas and will get apprehensive when his ideas get attacked, He does not like it when things do not go his way, and it is very obvious when he is upset by the hand of fate.

Ian is the mastermind behind the road trip that the 4 teenagers are on,  always attempting to make plans and take stops for the fuck of it. Therefore he is the most upset when the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. When he is upset, he makes it known he is upset. He curses, he insults, and becomes a mopey teenager.

  • (Tired but positive) Buck up, l'il cowgirl! We'll find your soul!

  • (Annoyed. Not angry) This fucking sucks...

Raleigh's Mom is an unseen character, only being heard over the phone in part of the book. She is very presumptuous, making very snide comments about Raleigh's compatriots when she hears they're from her school.

She gives the impression of a loving mother, but to Raleigh, it just feels like she's keeping tabs for the sake of keeping tabs.

  • Well, okay, well, that's good. How was your father?

Raleigh's Dad is just a man living in the Bay Area with his 2nd wife. He has one cynical negative voice line in the book, specifically about his ex wife.

  • Your mother doesn't know what love is, Raleigh.

The unnamed best friend was one of the best parts of Raleigh's young childhood life. Unfortunately it did not last long.  In Raleigh's 8th grade year, the best friend moved away, leaving Raleigh empty inside. She has not seen her in 4 years, 6 months, and 24 days.

  • (Sad and despondent) I'm moving. To Ottawa. For my Dad's work.
