Little Women Audio Play

Project Overview

Talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War. The story explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America. - Desc adapted from Goodreads

This project is a passion project for me. This is among my favorite books and it is important to me to create a beautiful homage to it. This will require a large cast of voice actors to embody their unique roles. The list of characters is too long to be exhaustive; I will go into most of them here but there will be more - which means that some of you may be asked to read for or to take on roles that are not on this list as they come up.

Because this audio drama will be covering a detailed and long classic, it will take a little while to produce - however the length of this process is solely intended to keep the work load for voice actors very low, giving only a few lines at a time.

All characters unless otherwise specified will speak with an American accent. Please read the full description of the character you audition for; some lines may require important context which will be included in the description.

I may ask some voice actors to do chemistry reads or callbacks; please keep an eye on your DMs or Discord friend requests.

Auditioners must leave their Discord handle or email address with their audition! The project will be organized in a Discord server, but I will make accommodations for people who do not have Discord by looping them in via email.

The roles of Jo and Adult Amy March have been pre-cast.

Thank you to everyone who auditioned for this project! This was truly the most difficult project I’ve ever had to cast. Some roles were not opened up for audition and were cast based on them, hence the unfamiliar names on this list. This project happened to have less roles and extras than my other projects have had, which unfortunately means that several people with great auditions could not be fit into the cast this time simply due to limited space.

For those who were not cast, there will be future opportunities coming soon. If you accept your role, please indicate it by leaving your Discord (if you have not already) AND accepting my Discord friend request so that I can add you to our server! If these two steps have not been completed within one week of this post, I will assume you are declining your role and will move to the next person in line.

Role assigned to: Skylark

The third March sister, Beth is very shy and quiet. She always tries to please other people and is concerned with keeping the family together. The best portrayal to reference is Claire Danes in 1994.

LINE CONTEXTS:

1. Beth is dying and trying to comfort Jo in this moving speech.

2. Beth is a bit nervous here; Mr. Laurence has invited her to play the piano in his house but she is shy (modern day, we'd call it social anxiety) and is nervous.

3. Beth confides in Jo that she knows she is dying.

  • I’m not afraid anymore. I can be brave, too. I don’t think I was meant to live long. I was never like the rest of you, making plans about the great things I’d do when I grew up. I've never been much use anywhere but home. I never wanted to leave it. That will be the hardest part, and leaving you all. I'm not afraid, but I know I will be homesick for you, even in heaven.

  • I’m Beth. I love it dearly, and I’ll come, if you are quite sure no one will hear me or be disturbed.

  • It’s like the tide going out, Jo. It goes slowly, but it can’t be stopped.

Kind and almost motherly, Meg is the eldest of the four March sisters. She is romantic, traditional, mature, and materialistic. The best portayal to reference is Emma Watson in the 2019 film.

LINE CONTEXTS:

1. Aunt March has stormed the house and is trying to dissuade Meg from marrying poor tutor John Brooke by insulting him. Meg is defending him.

2. Meg has gone and dressed up and begun drinking at a party. Laurie tells her to be careful not to drink too much. She is not annoyed here, but more reassuring.

3. Meg is settling an argument between Jo and Amy.

  • John wouldn't marry for money, any more than I would. We are willing to work and struggle, and we mean to wait. I'm not afraid of being poor. I've been happy so far, and I know I will be with him because he loves me.

  • Please don't tell Marmee. Tomorrow, I'll go back to being myself, and I'll be desperately good. Just let me have this one night.

  • You are old enough to behave better, Josephine. You should remember, now that you turn up your hair, you are a young lady.

Amy, in her childhood, is spoiled and vain. She is obsessed with all things upper-class, and her great ambition is to be a gentlewoman and to marry rich when she is grown up. Her interest in high society might be shallow, but her kind heart is deep, and people appreciate her classy behavior. The best portayal of her to reference is Kirsten Dunst in 1994.

LINE CONTEXTS:

1. Jo has left Amy out of an outing with Laurie. As revenge, Amy has burned Jo's manuscript in the fire while they were out. This is revenge - and childish revenge at that.

2. The sisters are rehearsing their annual Christmas play, and Jo is trying to get Amy to practice the fainting scene, saying she's too stiff.

3. Amy is very set on being prim and proper and is offended by Jo's word choices.

Voice description:

  • I BURNED IT. I burnt up your stupid little book. I told you I would make you pay, and I did!

  • I can't help it! I never saw anyone faint, and I won't make myself all black and blue, tumbling flat as YOU do. I'll fall into a chair and be graceful.

  • Jo, don't use slang words! It's so boyish.

Handsome, charming, smart, and cheeky. Though raised to be a gentleman, Laurie has a mischievous sense of humor. At his worst, he can be spoiled, selfish, and self-indulgent; Laurie’s always grown up with wealth and privilege and he sometimes takes that for granted. But at his best—usually when he’s around the March sisters—Laurie is intelligent, kind, and protective. He’s always seen himself as an honorary member of the March family and he would do anything for them. Best portayals to reference are Timothee Chalomet in 2019.

LINE CONTEXTS:

1. Laurie is teasing Amy. This just gives us a sense of Laurie's personality. He's fun-loving and definitely a bit bored with schooling. He's lazy. He's teasing Amy in response to her insistence that he go work for his grandfather.

2. Laurie has just proposed to Jo and been rejected. She is insisting she'll never marry, and this is his response. I like the way Timothee Chalomet handled this scene in the 2019 version, defeated and hurt.

3. Playfully taunting Jo.

  • I’d only plague him if I went. I may as well just stay and plague you longer. It agrees with you excellently.

  • You think so now, but you will. You will find some man and you will love him tremendously, and live and die for him. I know it, because it's your way. And I'll have to stand by and watch.

  • I know something you don’t know.

Marmee, the matriarch of the March family, is a near perfect model of motherhood in her daughters’ eyes. She is generous, wise, patient, and honest. She is never short of wise words, and she leverages the daily rhythms of the household as deliberate learning opportunities for her girls. Best portayal to reference is Susan Sarandon in 1994.

Voice description:

  • I want my daughters to be good, admired, loved, and respected, and to lead useful, pleasant lives with as little sorrow as God sees fit to send.

  • Don't let the sun go down on your anger. Forgive each other.

  • "Give them all my dear love and a kiss. Tell them I think of them by day, pray for them by night, and find my best comfort in their affection."

*Please note this character speaks with a German accent.* Professor Bhaer is a deeply principled, kind, joyful, intelligent man. He is a German immigrant to New York who genuinely loves his students and takes great joy in his life. He is kind and warm, good with children. The best portayal to reference is Gabriel Byrne in 1994.

LINE CONTEXTS:

1. A warm, grateful statement, kindly said to Jo as she writes home to her family.

2. He sees a child carrying a heavy bundle and offers a kindness to her warmly.

3. Jo has been writing sensationalist stories with violence in them. He feels these harm the people who read them.

Voice description:

  • It is quite a blessing to have so many you hold dear. My family is far away. It can be quite lonely at times, but I hold it a gift to love so dearly, even from afar.

  • That is too heavy for you. Here, give it to me.

  • There cannot be an honest living in things which cause harm.

Quiet and reserved, gentle and kind, John is Laurie's tutor, who eventually falls in love with Meg. Best portrayal to reference is James Norton in 2019.

LINE CONTEXT:

1. Meg has just defended his character to her aunt, who was being very insulting. He loves her, so this is deeply appreciated.

2. John has just run into Meg. He's coming into their home to try to help, because their father was injured in the war. This has a lot of kindness and compassion to it.

Voice description:

  • Thank you for defending me, and for proving you do care.

  • No, I am. So sorry to hear of all of this. I’ve come to offer myself as an escort to your mother. Mr. Laurence has commissions for me in Washington, and I would like to be of service to her there.
