Legacy's End - A Free Starfield Quest Mod
Project Overview
Background
This is a fan-made quest mod for the video game Starfield (2023), and will be released for free on both Nexus Mods and Bethesda's official Creations website.
The year is 2330. Earth is uninhabitable, and humanity has spread out across over 100 nearby star systems. Most space is unregulated, and piracy is rampant. The player may choose to join the largest pirate faction in the galaxy, the Crimson Fleet. The Fleet is hunting for a lost treasure known as Kryx’s Legacy. The player ultimately finds the treasure: a derelict GalBank transport ship carrying a significant, but unknown amount of encrypted credits. They transfer all of the encrypted currency to a GalBank data core.
In the base game, there are only two choices that can be made - bring the data core back to the Crimson Fleet, or turn it over to their nemesis, the United Colonies. The alternate ending added by this mod allows for an unthinkable third choice to be made: the player could keep the money for themselves, provided they can find someone with the skills to decrypt the currency, and the discretion to keep quiet about it. That someone is Kaia Valeris, a professional hacker who works for Helios Cybersecurity Services.
Progress
The mod is currently playable in-game (with the exception of voice lines) up until the epilogue, which I am currently working on. All of Kaia's dialogue has been finalized and implemented in-game, so there won't be any re-writes for her. The script is ready to go as a Google Doc. Considering the time it will take to finish the epilogue, implement voice lines, and do final QA testing, the release date will most likely be around August.
Role Details and Payment
Kaia is the main character of the mod. There are several minor characters who will be voiced using recycled lines from the base game. No AI is used.
Kaia has 563 lines of dialogue. This is a passion project for me, and since it will be released for free, $100 is as much as I can give. $50 will be paid at the halfway mark, after 281 lines are done, with the remaining $50 paid upon completion. PayPal is preferred. Also, if you are cast for Kaia, and you accept donations, I will gladly put your donation links at the top of the mod description and encourage mod users to donate to you.
Audition Requirements
- Read and understand the context for the lines
-Clean audio with no pops or background noise (doing your own noise reduction is fine)
- Format is whatever you're comfortable with, ABC or AABBCC
- All files should be Mono, 44100 Hz sample rate
Working knowledge of the Starfield universe would be helpful, but isn't required. The script will include pronunciation guides for in-universe terms and names where the pronunciation isn't obvious.
What to Expect If Cast
As mentioned above, I'm aiming for an August release, which would require all voice lines to be completed by the end of June, but this isn't necessarily a hard and fast deadline.
The script is a Google Doc, so I will need a Gmail address to give you access to it (doesn't have to be your main one, can be a throwaway), plus some in-game screenshots that help portray what Kaia goes through. Outside of that, communication can be done through CCC.
All sound files will need to be .WAV format, Mono, 44100 Hz sample rate, 16-bit PCM encoding.
About Me
I've been modding Starfield for about 8 months. I'm a long-time mod user for both Fallout 4 and Starfield, and want to give something back to the mod community by releasing my first quest mod for free.
I was recently accepted into Bethesda's Verified Creator program for Starfield, although I don't have any plans to release paid mods. I mainly applied to the program to get access to the wiki for the Starfield Creation Kit. If you want to get an idea of what kinds of mods I've done, my profiles are below.

Age - 31
Voice range - medium to high
Kaia grew up as an orphaned street rat in Neon, a cyberpunk pleasure city located on a huge fishing platform in an ocean world. She learned to hack out of necessity, and from childhood through her teenage years, she subsisted on petty theft, hacking ATMs, and odd hacking jobs.
One day, at the age of 18, she attempted to remotely access the personal laptop of a business traveler, and although she succeeded at hacking the laptop, she got caught. That business traveler happened to be the CEO and founder of Helios Cybersecurity Services, Orion Helios. Recognizing her potential, she was hired on the spot as a cyber runner (the in-universe term for hacker). Helios paid for her to receive a formal education, and she went on to achieve a Bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity.
Given that she grew up without parents, Kaia tends to see Helios as her family, and fits right in with her gray morality. Despite her rough childhood, she used her years in college to assimilate into the upper crust of society, and is always courteous and polite when interacting with clients. Her job title is Senior Cyber Runner, which is another way to say “professional hacker.” She is accustomed to working with high net worth individuals in professional settings.
While combat is not Kaia’s strong suit, she is proficient enough with pistols to defend herself. Her weapon of choice is a Novalight particle beam pistol named Street Rat’s Revenge.
During the events of this quest mod, Kaia experiences a wide range of emotions. When the player meets her for the first time, she is professional and confident. As the quest unfolds, she accompanies the player as a temporary companion and is involved in combat situations, which is highly stressful for her. This involves a handful of lines that are shouting, or near-shouting, such as warning the player of an incoming grenade, taunting enemies, or getting hit by bullets. Near the end of the quest, she can potentially experience grief due to the loss of a friend, and possibly anger, depending on how the player reacts to her loss.
Kaia doesn't really swear. The closest she gets is a couple of "damns."
Context for audition lines -
1. Introducing herself to the player for the first time. Friendly and professional.
2. Kaia and the player were recently attacked by assassins, and the player insinuates that they think she was the one who orchestrated the attack. Kaia is very serious here and explains why this isn't the case.
3. Kaia has just finished decrypting all of the currency on the data core. This is the big reveal moment where both she and the player find out the total value of the Legacy. However, this happens immediately after a large space battle, so Kaia's overall tone is serious.

Ah, hello! I'm Kaia. What brings you to the Members' Lounge today?
If I wanted you dead, I wouldn't need a team of assassins to do it. It would involve sabotaging your ship's life support systems, and you wouldn't see it coming.
Okay, we're in business. The decryption is done. Now we can finally see how much money is actually on this thing. And the grand total is... *gasp*
