"Laura" A Radio Musical (repost)

"Laura" A Radio Musical (repost)

Project Overview

Hello!

This casting call is for an audio-only musical play.
For an idea of the format, you can refer to the previous project we completed through CastingCallClub HERE.

Some of the key differences between that previous play and this one are that "Laura" is more introspective and darker in tone, and features a much larger focus on dialogue and acting (only 3 of the parts requires the actors to sing).

That said, the music is still the most important centerpiece, so a good vocal performance is very much important to those parts.
Instrumental versions of the songs will be provided, and a recording setup that lets you record your voice alone without audible playback is required (read: wear headphones and record only your voice).

The theme of the play is "The 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance)" as the main character works through them.

Auditions should be delivered with clear and unaltered voice recordings.
No modulation FX, auto-tuning or similar effects, and obviously also free from background noise, static or other interference as well.

*
The audition lines are placeholders and not from the actual script.

As before, payment listed are baselines and can be raised in accordance with the work put in.

Good luck and Thank You for reading!

Latest Updates

  • New Deadline

Due to a lot more interest than anticipated, we have cut the deadline back 1 week since we already have already received so many strong auditions. We are pretty much ready to start filling the roles already, but still want to leave some room for anyone else who might want to try out. Anyone who may have been waiting to send in their audition should take note of this, and try to have it in by the 18th. We apologize for any stress this might cause. For those who have already submitted their recordings; we thank you for you interest and all your wonderful auditions.

The character is an ageless but clearly adult male.
Looking for a deep, natural bass. Ideal sound-a-likes include Gary Anthony Williams and Keith David.
Charisma and charm is pivotal to the performance.
The actor should be comfortable with singing but does not require a particularly wide vocal range.
Ability to rap is also a plus.

  • It pains me because I believed in the guy more than he believed in himself.
He forgot the number one lesson, which is to do what you love for the sake of the journey.
Nothing is more rewarding than that. He lost sight of that. Forgot what it's all about.
He lost track of that enjoyment and instead, he got caught up in what most people get stuck on...

  • Sing a portion of a mid-range ballad.
Example: the chorus of "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica.

  • Perform a portion of "rock-rap".
Example: the first verse of "Intergalactic" by Beastie Boys.

The titular lead role.
Character is in her early 20's and requires a young and clear voice.
The actor needs to be able to confidently convey emotion through the range of despair, anger and sorrow in understated, quiet moments as well as with force when appropriate.
Also requires a versatile singer who is comfortable with soft ballads and somewhat rougher rock pieces.

  • Believe it or not, some times my life sucks beyond the telling of it.
And I don't understand why me trying to kill myself makes you want me to buy new clothes and clean my apartment.
Buying new clothes doesn't fix clinical depression. You're sitting there, telling me to tie a ribbon on a gunshot wound.

  • Sing a short portion of a high-range ballad.
Example: the chorus of "My Immortal" by Evanescense.

  • Sing a short portion of a mid-range rock song.
Example: the chorus of "Don't Cry For Pain" by Ana Johnsson.

A calm, monotone voice with clear pronunciation.
Beyond that, any interpretation will be considered.

  • It happens so fast.... You're not even sure what happened.
There's a very sharp pinch, and then it's spreading. Fast, through your whole face.
There's blood. A lot of blood.
You yell for your mom. She turns, and when she sees you, she gasps in horror.
    That's how these things happen.

  • That day, we'd made plans to have breakfast.
I called her, but she didn't answer her phone. I thought she'd turned it off and slept late, so I went to her apartment and knocked on her door. It wasn't locked. I went in and... I found her lying on the kitchen floor.

  • I have a strangely vivid memory... of her face.
That night... she seemed fine. Friendly and smiling.
Could I have done anything different...? I - I couldn't have known what she was feeling.
    But then... I didn't ask... did I?

Very minor part with only a couple of lines.
Requires the kind of compassionate delivery that you would expect from a doctor delivering bad news.

  • It should have worked... but it didn't.
There's one more possibility, but... I don't know if we can. I don't know if we should.
