LATE (OR NEVER) independent short film / 2D animation
Project Overview
Hello everyone,
LATER (OR NEVER) is a short 2D animated film that analyses how we deal with childhood trauma namely, in this case, parental violent behavior towards children.
The story has elements of surrealism and subjectivism: it begins with the adult in the cabinet of a therapist with the twist that the therapist is actually a human sized cat. As the story moves on we'll have the subjective view of the child who sees the violent parent as a monster. The film ends with the emotional ambiguity of the child who became an adult and watches his once violent parent, who is now a grandfather, play with his son.
The story is very close to my heart and I would very much like to see it come to light.

The sequence takes place in therapy, when BEN is vulnerable and a bit uncertain.
It's the first session and he's not sure about opening up. He's thought about his problems for a long time but it's the same time he's put it out there and he struggles to find words.
So, uh, I’m here because I have these recurring nightmares. It’s constant. As soon as I put my head on the pillow, I find myself in the same dream.
No.. n..no, I'm being hunted. I'm being hunted by monsters. And it's always, it's always very stressful like, they're everywhere and I have to run and hide and it's like I'm in a forest ad they're coming from all sides and I jump in the trees and then down from the trees and they follow me into the trees....It's a ...uh.. (finishes uncertainly)
The DAD is thretening BEN with physical violence. He is calm and in control but he's prone to bursts of anger.
Why are you crying?
(AGAIN, ANGRY)
WHY ARE YOU CRYING??
I didn't even touch you yet (CALM)
SHAH is a supporting character, she gently nudges BEN to sharing his experiences. Her voice is calm and composed.
So, what do you dream about? (pause) Tell me about it.
Like a car chase?
I see. And do you escape?
Theo is two years old. He only has one line. He says CAT! twice, and then will moan to ask his grandfather to take him in his arms.
THEO has the role of anchoring BEN in his life. He allows him to get a broader perspective of his situation.
CAT ! (with lots of conviction)
