Jormungandr: a horror game
Project Overview
Hello! I am the team and narrative lead for a group doing the Themed Horror Game Jam. We are looking for two voice actors to play characters in our game: one male and one female voice. This is a grim fantasy horror adventure story with Old Norse themes reinterpreted through a modern conscience.
As this is a game jam, all of us are working purely on a volunteer basis and do not expect to make a cent- in fact we are losing money. That said, we recognize the in-demand talent of strong voice actors, and as a token of good faith have assembled a small total budget of $75+$45=$120. This is not a judgment on the value of these roles, but simply our financial limitations.
STORY:
The jam has not officially started, so are not yet allowed to create a script, and some details are still in flux. I will update this casting call as I can, and feel free to ask me any questions. What I can provide is the story outline as it currently exists (Caution, suicide mention):
In the early 6th century, a galdrakona (Norse songstress/enchantress) named Tóna is hired to provide safe passage for a band of warriors with her songs. Ultimately, though, a frightening and unusual storm wrecks the ship. Tóna awakens in a sunken flooded cavern, the only survivor apart from the severely injured and kindly quartermaster. Finding an unusual sapphire bracelet, Tóna’s magical skills are greatly enhanced.
The quartermaster briefly muses about the unusual, magical nature of the cavern before he is quickly devoured by an enormous sea creature- a spawn of Jormund- presenting the serious danger and a reason for Tóna to find a way to escape the cavern.
As she travels through, she discovers that the cavern contains the wreckage of many ships, and their ghostly, angry crews present another threat. She uses her simple tools- a ritual bell and lyre- to make her way through the dangers of the cave and distract or repel the hunting monsters.
Tóna also viscerally recalls memories of the dire voyage that led to the wreck. Through these memories, it becomes clear that the ship’s captain was an abusive and greedy terror who abused his position to gather slaves for personal wealth and forced Tóna to consecrate human sacrifices to speed their journey. The galdrakona hated him so deeply she allowed the ship to sink on purpose- but also doomed her fellow innocents and she is tormented by the guilt.
At the end of the cavern is an altar to the goddess Ran- the personification of the drowning sea. A manifestation of Ran takes back her bracelet and explains she is testing whether Tóna belongs among the drowned or “has sung well enough to live”. Tóna chooses to either use a knife on the altar to commit suicide or to take out her lyre and sing to Ran, opening a passage glimmering with blinding daylight.
ROLES:
Tóna: female. guilt-stricken, brave, damaged, artistically-inclined, sensitive, protective of self
It would be great if you could manage a slight Scandinavian accent, and even better if you were willing and able to sing a short song. Neither of these are dealbreakers in and of themselves, however. Roughly anticipated to be about 70 lines including grunts, screams, etc. $75
The Captain and The Quartermaster: both male. The Captain is a cruel, dominant, selfish, commanding, careless person. The Quartermaster is aging, downtrodden, kind, thoughtful, and soft-hearted. Again, a slight Scandinavian accent would be great but is not at all a dealbreaker. You would need to be able to provide a distinctive voice for both men without going cartoonish, however. Roughly anticipated to be about 40 lines inclusive of both roles, including grunts, screams, etc. $45
AUDITION:
At a minimum, please send me your voice reel (if you have one), as well as 2-3 sentences read from your favorite fiction book. These can be all dialogue lines, all description lines, or a mix. Please use the voice(s) you anticipate using for the role(s).
We would also love to hear 3-4 lines of the type that might end up in the final script. Context for them is in parentheses. Obviously, only record the lines for your character(s). These are:
Tona 1: This bracelet- I’ve never seen anything like it. (You have just spotted an ornate and strange bracelet on the arm of a mummified corpse in a sarcophagus.)
Tona 2: By Hel! What is that thing?! (An enormous monster has emerged from its hiding place and you are terrified.)
Tona 3: Svenda… Tormund.. I’m so sorry. (You have found the corpses of two of your fellow sailors, and feel responsible for their deaths.)
Captain 1: Shut your mouth, witch! Your pretty face remains unspoiled by my mercy. (You are angry at Tona and lording the threat of violence over her.)
Captain 2: We sail on. They are not our kin. (You are ordering the sailors to ignore the pleas of drowning men.)
Quartermaster 1: I’ve saved away a bit of sheep’s cheese for you. I know it’s your favorite. (Offering Tona a treat in a trying moment on the voyage.)
Quartermaster 2: Odin’s beard! Urgh- this hurts. (Tona is trying to pull out the spear shaft broken off in your chest.)
BASIC FACTS:
TERMS: as above, but somewhat negotiable
PAY: $75 for female role, $45 for male roles.
DEADLINE: We plan to accept the last auditions on 11am, June 1, Eastern US time.
AUDITION SPECS: Please include your voice reel, as well as 2-3 lines read from your favorite fiction book in the voice you anticipate using, as well as the 3 or 4 lines listed for each cast member.
CONDITIONS:
Please only submit if you are 18 or older.

Be sure to include the best email to reach you.
Ensure your audition audio is free of noise and distortion.
Please don’t use any post-processing or editing (apart from cutting mistakes)
