HOW TO SHOOT A TIGER | Animated short voice casting

HOW TO SHOOT A TIGER | Animated short voice casting

Project Overview

HOW TO SHOOT A TIGER is an animated short film following a wildlife photographer in their quest to capture the elusive Siberian tiger, with only a 19th-century poacher's memoir as a guide. As the bitter winter crawls on with no sign of their target, however, their faith in both their long-dead 'companion' and the plausibility of their own mission begins to waver.

This is a 5 minute student film which seeks to to explore the power humanity holds over the natural world, whether trying to conquer or preserve it, while stressing the importance of the younger generation taking action to mend this fractured relationship rather than wasting time grieving what those who came before us have already destroyed.

As this is being produced on a student budget, the pay isn't especially high, but talent will of course be compensated for their work - though the flat rate applies for the script as it is now, with potential retakes included, any changes to the script made later on will be compensated in time. If you audition, I'll assume you're open to these potential retakes.

Requirements:

  • A good-quality microphone and at least semi-professional setup with no background noise

  • Discord or email for communication

  • Paypal is a must for payment (as it's the only one we can really access in Australia)

Turnaround: As it stands, the deadline is only as tight as it is because I need to get a polished animatic submitted in about a week and a half - stupid university reason, I know, but reason nonetheless - and I'd love to be able to lock down voice actors before then. If you're submitting before the 17th, I'm assuming you'll be able to send through a recording within a week from this, even if it's only rough. If I can't select anyone before the 17th, I'll extend it to my next deadline, but I would really love to hit this target!

Oh my God, everybody, I don't know what to say!

When I first published this I thought I'd be lucky to get maybe 10 people putting their hands up, so close this out with nearly 200 submissions has been absolutely insane. I've been so overwhelmed by the positive responses from everybody and while I'm delighted to say I've been able to find the right voices, I've had such a blast listening through everybody's auditions, and I can't thank you enough for your enthusiasm and support. I wish I had the time to go through and comment on everyone individually, but everybody really did bring something unique to the roles of Cutler and Cam, and I honestly just wish I'd written a story with more characters so I could bring in more of your exceptional talent.

This was my first time using CCC as a platform to find actors, but it definitely won't be my last. Thank you so much again for your time and talent, and I hope I can work with more of you later on down the track!!

An upper-class English 19th century big game poacher, who specialises in the hunting of Siberian tigers. Revered for his experience by other gamesmen of his time, he carries himself with an air of haughty self-importance, but though he can be somewhat flippant about the lives of the tigers he kills, he still has a respect for the power of the beasts he targets. Though he serves as Cam's guide, his delivery is more suited to a campfire than a lecture hall, adding notes of playfulness and drama to his instruction.

50s-70s, Victorian English accent, or at least as close as you can get with an uppity inflection - think early Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

Though really only the author of the book Cam's reading, he serves as the narrator of the film, and as we're trying to fit a lot of wordy 'dialogue' into a film with a strict 5 minute runtime, this role requires someone with a clear and articulate delivery who can read things quickly while still being clipped and coherent.

  • On any other eve, keeping pace would have been impossible. The astonishing speed of this great beast has surprised many novice gunmen - that is to say, without the dead weight of a crippled shoulder.

  • The shooting of a tiger is no easy feat, least of all the shooting of a Siberian. Unlike those gamesmen of the southernmost jungles, cloaked as they are by a scorching sun this frosted alpine has scarcely felt the warmth of, the man who chooses to conquer these snowcapped wilds is not afforded the luxury of mobility.

  • The life of the camp-bound Siberian gamesman is undeniably a life of waiting. I once found myself camped by the cave-mouth den of one beast for, by my final count, near three weeks - tedious work, yes, but the skin of a tiger, one will come to find, is worth it.

Cam is a young wildlife photographer, with a deep-seated love for the natural world and an eagerness to capture its beauty. Excited and optimistic as they are about their quest to photograph a tiger, their faith is not unshakeable, and as time goes on, they find themself impatient and disillusioned. Though they are alone in their hide, they fill the silence by talking to themself, the animals they see, and the author of the hunting memoir they're reading to kill the time.

Early 20s, mid-range - while excitable and at times naïve, they're more passionate and heartfelt, not childish. Open to all accents and genders, and encourage non-USAmericans to apply.

  • (coming out of a yawn) Oooohhh-kay...... oh! (upbeat, familiar) Good-morning, Cutler! Where were we...

  • (shocked, furious) FIVE?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN, FIVE! (beat, cooling off - now mocking, muttered) Oh, look at me, I'm Cutler St. Clair, I saw five tigers at once, and then I put a bullet through their heads...

  • (gentle, encouraging) It's okay, go on!
