Everdark: Scifi/Fantasy Audiobook

Everdark: Scifi/Fantasy Audiobook

Project Overview

Welcome to the Metacosm; novels written by partners N and A Soleil out of a science fantasy universe with heavy TTRPG/comic book/video game references and a touch of LitRPG.

We're looking to cast the narrator for an audiobook of our debut novel Everdark, self-published in 2023. We will be crowdfunding for the full audiobook at the end of the year and so we'd like to scout our narrator early to record some (paid) promo stuff for the campaign itself. Right now the plan is to produce in between one and three videos for the campaign. (We will be offering at minimum industry standard rates for the full audiobook if it funds, but since that varies, it's negotiable. Regardless, we won't be expecting 15 finished hours for $200.)

The synopsis:

“If I stay … I’ll kill them all.”

Sixteen year old Redd is a runaway with psionic powers and PTSD.

While escaping the parents who experimented on her, Redd unwittingly opens a portal to a planet populated by the last remnant of the angelic species. Trouble follows. With nowhere else to go, she is caught up in an intergalactic conflict: the militant, space-faring Rangers and their allies must prevent the fortress Everdark, the angels’ last bastion, from being overrun by evil forces.

The abuse Redd survived takes its toll in the form of nightmares, mood swings, and paranoia — but there is comfort in combat, so she joins the front line. There, she discovers that she can wield terrible power at the behest of a mysterious entity residing somewhere within her, though the transaction is not in her favor. Clinging to an often nebulous connection to shared reality, she becomes inextricably involved with more than just the battle to protect the angels.

The events of Everdark are the key to a mechanism that, with Redd and her companions as integral gears, will start a countdown. And at zero … a shift in the core of the metacosm, one written into its very code before Time began.

We're most active on BlueSky if you wanna connect (hopefully this won't be our only project, and I have ideas to expand this project if the crowdfunding goes unexpectedly well): https://bsky.app/profile/metacosmchronicles.com

Latest Updates

  • Project on hiatus due to burnout: my apologies.

This is the update nobody wants to have to see or make.

My deepest apologies that this project will be going on indefinite hiatus.

I want to thank everyone again for generously taking time out to audition: we are keeping all of you in mind for future ventures -- and there will be.

We decided to do some revisions to the original text in preparation for the audiobook, but as time went on those revisions got bigger and eventually spiraled out of control.

We need to take some time to really think about where we want to go with Metacosm as a whole, and I'm not sure when we'll be able to come back to this specific project.

If you'd like to keep up to date with our progress on the restructuring, I'm primarily on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/metacosmchronicles.com
Hope to see you all soon! Take care of your mental health.

  • Submissions closed!

We are officially closed to submissions, thank you all so much! We are honestly blown away by how many people submitted.

As a reminder, the campaign doesn't start until November. (You can sign up to be notified when it goes live here: http://metacosmchronicles.com/tbb) So we will be aiming to finish the promo videos by October.

    What's next?

We will be going through all the submissions, of course! This will likely take some time, though I can't say exactly how long. We will aim for a couple of weeks, though. I will message people here unless you provided an outside method, like Discord. We may contact multiple people at first to hash out details or with further questions; if you haven't heard from us by July, assume you weren't right for this project.

Hopefully, we will have more projects down the line needing voice actors, so even if you weren't right for this one, we'll keep you all in mind for the next! (And, if by some miracle the crowdfunder does really well, we're planning on looking into a full cast version)

  • One week left update + crowdfunding news!

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who auditioned so far! We were honestly not expecting such a response; you're all amazing, and we already have our eyes on a few people. You're all definitely making the final decision a tough one.

We are starting to work out the details of the crowdfunding campaign for this, set to go live in Nov (follow the campaign updates here: http://metacosmchronicles.com/tbb) and we've decided the minimum rate we're going to offer for the audiobook itself is $100 pfh -- contingent on the crowdfunder. However, we've had two successful crowdfunders for around this amount before (you can check them out on our BackerKit: (https://www.backerkit.com/c/users/2815166/created_projects), so we're relatively confident. We are still open to negotiating for a slightly higher rate with the right narrator, especially for someone who can do their own ACX-quality audio engineering.

Just to be clear, even if the crowdfunder fails, you'll still get paid for the promo videos.

Paid: Flat Rate 50 USD

The narrator must:

- Be able to convincingly portray subtle differences between multiple characters of many genders.

- Portray complex and believable emotions well. (The story has elements of mental illness, war, and death)

- Have a great sense of dramatic pacing.

- Have good diction without theatrical overpronunciation. (Less of an Astarion, more of a Shadowheart)

- Be able to roll with complicated scifi/fantasy words. (For example, one of the tertiary character's names is Tyyrulriathula. I'm so sorry. I will help you pronounce it lol)

- Publishing quality equipment. Audio engineering experience is a HUGE plus but not necessary.

- ABSOLUTELY NO AI WHATSOEVER. We make the pledge to our readers that we don't use AI in any of our writing or art, so we will not even consider hiring someone who uses AI.

Any accents welcome. We'd prefer someone who isn't too commercial-sounding, a chill mid- to deeper-toned feminine voice preferably.

Some TWs for this project: as stated above the story deals with a mentally-ill protagonist, as well as references to child abuse, human trafficking, violence and gore, has plenty of swearing and one fade-to-black sex scene.

Language:
  • english
Voice description:
  • female adult
  • “I want to help,” Redd said quietly but stubbornly. “This is Ara’s home. Ara’s people. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself knowing I walked away, when I have the power to do something, anything. "

  • When it seemed her words weren’t reaching him — a battle she couldn’t win but damn if she wouldn’t try — she called on the golden light, set it to buzzing under her skin, ready to take on the swords of his rage even if it killed her —

  • Despairing, she grasped at it — but she was wrong in one thing: the golden light controlled the power, not her. It faded, folding back into itself, into a locked place inside her mind, and took with it its boon. Redd cried out in anguish, and fell to blackness.
