Dynamite! - An Original Podcast

Dynamite! - An Original Podcast

Project Overview

Most children dream of growing up and becoming astronauts, firefighters or veterinarians. Bright-eyed, wild-haired Dinah McKinney dreams of being a superhero. Unfortunately, living in a world where superpowers are shunned, feared and those who have them are sent off to a school that doubles as a prison, her hopes and dreams are far from coming to fruition. She's resigned to a boring life of boring aspirations and events. And then she gets her own powers.

Dynamite! is an original fiction podcast that hopes to run for three seasons, following the lives of superpowered teenagers learning how to deal with their newfound powers. We are looking for any talent - no prior experience required. We ask, however, that you have a decent and clear microphone. This podcast will include swearing, so if this is something that makes you uncomfortable it may be something to consider. While there are only a few characters open for audition, there are a wide array of characters that are waiting to be played, so even if you don't think that your voice suits a role - just give it your best shot!

  • Cast List

Hi all! Cast list will be published tomorrow. If you haven't checked your messages, please do, because I've sent a few of you a dm about some additional lines.
  • Deadline Extended/More Information

Hi all! First off, I want to say a huge THANK YOU to everybody who has auditioned so far. I'm really pleased by the talent we've seen thus far. That being said, there are one or two characters that we haven't found the right voice for yet, so we're going to extend auditions to the 11th, Secondly, here's some slightly more exciting news! We have about six other characters who have pretty prominent roles in the podcast but aren't open for public auditions - mostly because of spoiler-related reasons. Once the deadline for auditions has passed, we may ask certain actors to record us some lines for those characters. This'll be done through PM, so keep your eyes peeled once the 11th hits!

Dinah is the protagonist of Dynamite! and will, therefore, hold the most lines. She is an enthusiastic, energetic and excitable young lady with a penchant for the fantastical and daydreaming. Her impulsive streak has been known to get her into trouble, and she has no problem speaking her mind.

Looking for an actress who can carry her high-energy and bubbly demeanour, but has the range to show a serious side. Mid-to-high voice.

  • "I'm the one who just escaped from certain death, blew the roof off a building and had my entire future turned on its head, and for some reason /you're/ the one who's freaking out? Give me a break."

  • "(Giddy) You wouldn't believe it, Ally! Everyone here is so talented! There's a girl that sits next to me in class who can make herself levitate just by concentrating really hard! And - get this - Ms Kellet says that if I work hard, I might end up just as good as she is! What do you think of that?"

  • "(Indignant) Don't look at me like that! I can do just fine all by myself. I don't need your help."

Clarence is a student at Avalon - the school for superpowered youths - who quickly becomes one of Dinah's very best friends. He plays quite a prominent role in the podcast. He's a remarkably talkative boy with a flair for the dramatic, though he can become almost frighteningly calm when provoked. Charismatic, cocky and slightly crass, though very loyal and stands firm to his beliefs.

His actor should speak in a mid-to-low range, carrying a slightly jokey tone when speaking in neutral. Be warned, there's a lot of swearing and bad puns.

  • (He is obviously joking) "Aha! The lovely new addition to the beloved hellhole we call a home! How do you do, Ms McKinney? Please ignore whatever Poppy's said about me - I can assure you that it's all lies and slander."

  • "Well, Dines. All you need is a little run in with a friendly automaton. What do you think? Ready to kick some robot ass?”

  • (Calmly) "I'm going to ask you to let go of my friends. I'm not going to ask twice. And I can assure you, if you don't, you're going to regret it."

(QUICK NOTE: He's a shapeshifter, so a couple of lines will be given to other voices)

Matt is the third and final character that makes up the main trio, and he will also play a prominent role. Slightly aloof, and very nihilistic, he ends up playing the adult role more often than not. Still, he has a slightly childish temperament - becoming whimsically excited just as easily as he can become bitingly sarcastic. Thought articulate, he tends to speak very quickly, and can often stumble over his words.

Though in canon, Matt has an British/Irish accent, if you can't do it, I won't hold it against you! He has a mid-to-high voice and is extremely emotive. Looking for an actor who can play off his slight awkwardness.

  • (Slightly smug) "Considering the fact that I just saved your lives, it seems you two both owe me a favour."

  • "Shut up! I know I just made a giant fool of myself in front of about seven hundred people, and I'm already mortified by it - I don't need you to remind me of it."

  • "Of course I believe you’re capable of something! You’re capable of being an idiot."

Poppy, while not one of the main trio, is one of Dinah's good friends. Despite being the daughter of Ira Yuan, an infamous deserter and enemy of the state, she doesn't let it define her. Ladylike, flirty and extroverted, she loves to take stand up and take the lead. She has a good heart, despite her penchant for holding grudges and, on occasion, being bitingly honest.

Looking for a big-sister type voice, mid-to-low range. Poppy can change from nice to mean in an instant, so keep that in mind while auditioning.

  • "I might not look it, but I can lift up to five times my weight. Mr Walsh - he’s in charge of Meta training - says that the more effort I put into channelling my ability, the more likely I’ll be able to bring that number up to seven!"

  • "Right. I'll do it. On one condition. You manage to score me a date with Matthew."

  • (Irate) "Come on, let's go. I don't need James ruining my day."

James is Poppy's twin brother. Unlike his sister, due to his striking resemblance to his traitor father - both in appearance and in his ability - he is often shunned. He also carries a secret which has alienated himself from his sister. Terribly soft-spoken, introverted and highly intelligent, he tends to keep to himself but strikes up a budding friendship with Dinah. He tends to refrain from using his ability and is quite self-conscious. Despite this, he has a wicked sense of humour.

Looking for a soft, slightly more feminine voice in the mid-to-high range. He speaks quite dully, though does not lack emotion in his lines at all.

  • "You’re Dinah, right? (He pauses) I didn’t read your mind if that’s what you’re thinking. I saw your name on the class rota."

  • "When I was a kid, I used to think my dad was the best person in the world. I used to follow him around and call him a superhero. It's ironic to think about how wrong I was."

  • (He is shakily using his ability to manipulate somebody) "Stop. Stand up. Walk over to that table, enter the passcode to the safe and give me the contents inside."

The headmistress at Avalon Academy. She saves Dinah's life early on in the novel and continues to be a parental, guiding figure throughout the rest of the story. She is mature and calm, and it takes a lot to get her to be mad and raise her voice. Still, there is a sense of strictness to her character.

Looking for an actress who can speak with a steel sense of calm. Lower register, and mature.

  • "Miss McKinney, I'm afraid that I am going to have to cut your epiphany short. There's a car waiting for us outside, and it won't be waiting for much longer."

  • "Sorry to keep you waiting. I hope you've all been aquatinted?"

  • "Ah, Mr Maeson. You made a very ... interesting speech. I hope the technical malfunctions won't put you off pursuing a career in the future. I do see a talent. Of... sorts."

Ira is essentially the 'big bad' of this season. Having deserted his family and country after leaking classified information to the enemy, he has taken up the mantle of their now-deceased leader. He has an unhealthy obsession with his children, particularly his son. His demeanour comes off as chillingly nonchalant.

Looking for a voice actor skilled in conveying an eerie sense of casual menace. Mid-to-low range, with a slow manner of speech.

  • "You have made things rather difficult for us. You see, the woman you disabled at Monteith happened to be my second-in-command."

  • "James. Don't you understand? You and I are the same. We are of the same blood and the same talents. You can't just run away from me."

  • "You're nothing but children, half-trained dimwits. You have absolutely no idea how easily I could kill you all, right here and right now."
