Dear Evan Hansen GENDERBENT

Project Overview

Pretty self-explanatory! This is a genderbent production of the hit musical Dear Evan Hansen! There's just a few rules:

I will be playing Connor/Karliah Murphy, sorry about that!

You must be older than 13! If you're almost 13, talk to me about an exception. I just don't want any little kiddos (no offense) working on this as we may also (depending on the turnout) cover the cut songs and songs not included in the OST.

You MUST HAVE A GMAIL OR A SKYPE!! Skype would be very much preferred as I'm on it more often than my gmail, but if you've only got gmail, then that's okay.

Please have a decent quality mic! I hate to do this (especially since I know the struggle) but I don't want a fuzzy mic in our midst. :)

Audition for whatever roles you'd like to! You can audition for ones even if they're not the same gender that you identify with.

You must! Know! The songs! And some of the story, at least! For Dear Evan Hansen! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! I will NOT be happy if you get cast only to reveal you actually know nothing about the character you're playing.

Link me your YouTube so I can credit you (it will be put on YT) for your great work!

Please be nice! I hope to make some friends through this project, and I think everyone else would like that as well, so if you're not nice, I will kick you out!

  • Lots of things: Read it all!

God. Damn! There's been a fair few auditions, especially for artists (they were filled almost as soon as I created them), so I think it's only fair that you *checks command center* 21 followers know what we're up to. First off: We've got the members for Sincerely, Me! So look forward to that within the next month. RosaIce, our Evelyn Hansen, should also come out with Words Fail soon enough! I personally can't wait to see the emotion she brings to the table. Secondly: I've been debating making this the entire musical. Not just the songs. What do you guys think? I need the community's feedback- your opinions matter to me! Thirdly: you can check out my ao3 (it's literally my CCC user, but if you're too lazy to search me- here: http://archiveofourown.org/users/FluffyHetalianGuitarist ) and I will be posting genderbent DEH fics, using my interpretations of the characters and possibly some AUs and polyamory *wiggles eyebrows* so look for that, if you like fanfiction! (I'm working on a oneshot as I write this update, actually) And lastly, I made a role for people who want to do animatics specifically! This would be a dream come true for me, to have animatics with my vocals in them (and some other talented lovelies), so I really look forward to seeing new talent appear! And that's it for now! The only taken cast members are Evelyn, Karliah, and Jenni, so be sure to audition for Lori, ensemble, Xander, Alan, Cory, and Hunter! I'd love to have a talented guy to record So Big/So Small for us, that's for sure. Alright, I don't know if you're still reading- if you are, good job! My ADHD/ADD ass could never do that. I need a TL;DR line after everything. And no, I'm not giving a TL;DR line to you now. Nice try. I look forward to your feedback, and I hope to see you on our tumblr where you'll get sneak peeks that I won't post even on CCC!
  • Tumblr has been created!

@deh-genderbent-the-musical is our tumblr account! We'll be accepting fanfics for the genderbend au, and fanart as well. We'll also post sneak peeks of our songs and art on there. :) We hope to see you there soon! It's still sorta a work in progress, but rest assured it will be fully funtioning and filled out by this time next week. We'll also have our own YouTube soon, so keep an eye out for that!
  • Evie has been chosen!

I know the project is still early in its stage of getting out there, but I found my Evie probably the day I announced this project. I don't want anyone to get their hopes up when I had already essentially made up my mind. I'm very sorry to all who auditioned- you were all fantastic, and I'm truly torn about the fact that I could only cast one of you talented ladies. Jenni, Lori, and the Ensemble are female roles that are open- I haven't found a Jenni yet, so please be sure to audition for her! The sooner she gets cast, the sooner we can do Sincerely, Me and get this show on the road.
  • Artist has been found!

I've found an incredible artist already, user Mangamay, so I cast her for the role! I will create the role again, so that others may audition and join as well, but I thought I'd let you all know that we've cast our first member for this project. :)

Role assigned to: RosaIce

Evelyn Hansen is a teen girl- in her senior year, to be exact- with severe anxiety. Her voice is usually somewhat unsure of itself, like she questions herself, and she feels left out, wondering if she'll be forgotten when she dies. She struggled with minor depression (presumably) and suicidal thoughts, and is now trying to turn that around- she's trying to put herself out there, and get things done.

  • Sing at least 30 seconds of Waving Through A Window

  • Sing at least 30 seconds of Words Fail (make sure to put emotion into your voice, because if your voice is devoid of emotion I will not choose you!)

  • 'Dear Evelyn Hansen, turns out this wasn't an amazing day after all. This-this isn't going to be an amazing week, or-or an amazing year because, well because why would it be?'

Jenni is Evie's closest- and only- friend. They've known each other since a young age, presumably over ten years at this point, but yet they're not too close anymore. Jenni is insecure- so she keeps up a confident, cocky front, trying to keep people out- and trying to keep her true self locked in. When Evie 'betrays' her and drops her from the Karliah Project, Jenni's heartbroken- her only friend, sweet little Evelyn Hansen, has pushed her away. This bitterness shows in Good For You, where Jenni rambles about how betrayed she feels, and how upset she is that she was so easily disposed of.

  • Sing Jenni's harmonies from the end of Sincerely, Me

  • Sing Jenni's section of Good For You

  • 'You fell out of a tree? What are you, an acorn?'

Xander is Karliah's younger brother. Only younger by a year or two, Xander still has a very firm grasp on what was wrong with his sister- a lot. He felt betrayed when Karliah took her own life, and yet... Couldn't mourn for her, not as much as he wanted to. Though he wished she hadn't offed herself, he was bitter- bitter for the way his sister had treated him in life. This shows in Requiem- he sings about how he's confused as to how what Evie's saying can be true- he knew Karliah as a monster, and Evie's saying she was a good person?

Later in the musical, after You Will Be Found, Evie and Xander hook up, and Xander convinces Evie that he loves her for who she is (Only Us) and tries to tell her that he doesn't want their relationship to be about the Karliah Project. He wants it to be about them.

  • Sing Xander's first verse of Requiem

  • 'Did my sister hurt you? Ugh... I'm sorry, she- she's got issues. ... Evie, right? ... I'm Xander.'

  • Sing Xander's part from Only Us

Alan Beck is, simply put, a goody-two-shoes. He wants to be the best he can be, get the best grades that he can, and above all, he wants friends- friends that he can be the best that he can be with. Alan's help is enlisted in promoting the Karliah Project, and he goes overboard- the entire thing ends up all over the web in a matter of days. Alan doesn't mind this, and seems oblivious to Evie's desire to keep it quiet. When Evie shows Alan 'Karliah's suicide note' as 'proof' that she and Karliah were friends (which was actually a letter Evie wrote to herself), Alan takes it upon himself to publish it- to show everyone that Evie and Karliah's friendship MUST have been real. Rather quickly after this, Alan gets dropped from the project- and feels truly wronged. He didn't do anything wrong, to his knowledge, so why did Evie push him away? He doesn't know how to deal with this sadness and feelings of betrayal, so he sings them out in Good For You.

  • Sing the chorus of You Will Be Found

  • Sing Alan's section of Good For You

Lori/Lorelai Murphy

Lorelai Murphy is Karliah and Xander's mother. A tough woman, she does most of the work around the house while her husband stays at home, watches the children, and all that. She never knew how to parent her children, and when Karliah's death came to pass, she didn't know what to do. The two had never been close, and Lorelai was truly lost as to how she should feel, what she should do- and this is where Requiem comes in. With the progression of the musical, Lorelai gets to know Evie- and grows to love her, as a daughter- the daughter she never had. In 'To Break In a Glove', Lorelai teaches Evie about doing things the right way- even if it's hard. This is when she realizes- that's what she should have done with Karliah. She should have been there for her daughter. But she wasn't.

  • Sing Lori's section of Requiem

  • Sing 30 seconds of To Break in a Glove (try to get the 'you do the hard thing... cuz that's the right thing... yeah that's the right thing...', if you can)

Hunter Hansen is a single father who has to work vigorous amounts of shifts in order to get by in life. He goes to nurse school and is trying to graduate, as well as working and trying to take care of her only child- Evelyn. Over the years, Evie and Hunter have grown somewhat apart- Hunter's been working too much to get to know his little girl. In Anybody Have A Map? he expresses his confusion as to how to parent his daughter, and how to cope with her changes in attitude as she matures. In Good For You, he feels deeply betrayed and upset- Evie has made herself a new family with the Murphys, and Hunter's supposed to just accept this? Finally, in So Big/So Small, he expresses his apologies to Evie- he apologizes for never being there, and he promises he'll try harder to help her through life, and support her, as a good father should.

  • Sing Hunter's section of Anybody Have a Map?

  • Sing Hunter's section of Good For You

  • Sing a part of So Big/So Small

Cory Murphy

Cory Murphy is, among other things, Xander and Karliah's stay-at-home father. Constantly trying new things, trying to be hip, trying to stay fit- the embodiment of a suburban white mom, only less easily offended and nicer. Cory tries desperately to stay in-touch with her children, but both are often busy- and with Karliah's death as of recently, Cory has been feeling more like a failure than anything else. He tries to rekindle any relationship he may have had with Xander, but to no avail- the latter is too caught up in hating Karliah to realize that Cory is devastated by how he's failed at parenting. His voice has power, but also uncertainty at times- he's not too sure what this whole parenting thing is truly about, and he's really trying his best.

  • Sing Cory's section of Requiem

  • Sing 30 seconds of You Will Be Found's chorus (the overlapping harmonies)

  • Say something you think would fit (give me some emotion!)

This is the community voices heard in You Will Be Found! I might cast some of the main cast into this (depending on the number of auditions I get) but! I might also put you into the Finale, depending on whether or not I really like your voice. :) Depending on the number of auditions, everyone should be guaranteed a spot in the ensemble.

  • Sing the chorus to You Will Be Found

  • Sing the Finale

This is really important! While I do have some editing software, it's not very good, especially not for this project's size.

This role does not need to be fulfilled- but it's a wish of mine. :) You can draw character portraits, make animatics- whatever you'd prefer. Animatics would be great- if you don't have an animating software, don't sweat it- just PM me if you'd like more details.

Since we already have two artists, I don't think this is necessary- but by all means, you can audition for this if you'd like to! I was amazed when the original artist role, then the secondary artist role, were filled so fast- and I've been meaning to add another one since our secondary artist, Zoelle, was cast. :3

This would be a dream come true for me. If you're willing, I'm definitely more than happy to welcome you to the team! I'd love to have a talented artist to make animatics for our songs. I hope to see this role filled soon!! <3
