Danganronpa: First Blood

Danganronpa: First Blood

Project Overview

Danganronpa: First Blood is, as far as the team can tell, the first (or one of the first) Audio Drama Fanganronpa to have a main character. This series will function more greatly as something of an audio book, as a large majority of the fangan already exists as google docs shared to a small following of people. Differences from a typical audio drama fangan include:

  • Narration from a Main Character

  • A Character in a Protagonist Role

  • Much Longer Episodes

The story follows 16 students, all of whom have been accepted into Hope's Peak Academy as the next class of Ultimate Students- the best of the best at whatever field they find themselves working in. Naka Tomi is not one of these Ultimates, but still has found himself among the 16 as the Ultimate Lucky Student. He was selected out of countless thousands of students to join the class, and believes it might be difficult to adjust.

Instead of adjusting to a new school, however, the students find themselves trapped in a sick game of life and death- where the only way to escape and return to a normal life is to kill one of their classmates and get away with it.

This series is designed to parallel the original Danganronpa series in many ways, though the two worlds are not the same. While many names and families may seem familiar, these characters are different, and go through different experiences and perform different actions from those in the mainline series.

A note for any auditioneers: this will be different than most fangans you might have auditioned for. Up until chapter 4 of this story has already been 90% completed, meaning you will get scripts and info much more efficiently than most other projects.

This project contains violence, swearing, descriptions of violence, elements of horror, and themes of abuse, grief, and loss.

(Nah-kah Toh-mee)

Gender: Male

The main character of this story. Prior to his time at Hope's Peak, he lived a simple life. Typical hopes, ideas, and goals. Eventually, however, he got accepted through a lottery system into Hope's Peak Academy, the most prestigious school in the world. However, instead of a top-notch education, he finds himself trapped in a game of life or death.

Fitting for a main character, he has a great deal of dialogue. A sizable portion of it is through narrating what he thinks and sees throughout his experience in the killing game. The voice actor for Naka will need to be able to engage with a plethora of emotions, many bad, and many good. No strict requirements for voice are held, though a medium tone and normal texture is preferred. It is to be noted that he frequently has mood swings, and oftentimes comes off as rude when he does not mean to due to not thinking especially clearly on what he says. He also oftentimes comes of as rude when he does mean to, and is thinking very clearly about what he says.

It sounds ridiculous, really. It always has to me. I never strove for whatever I was told to. I just do as I think, right? It hasn’t been that bad a choice thus far, really. I have a few friends, my grades aren’t that bad, I work a job every summer and I have a decent amount of spending money. My life, though not exceptional, isn’t half bad. That is, until a single letter would change everything.”

  • (Inquisitive, coming off as a bit rude) “Naka Tomi, Lucky Student. I think I remember you from all the news stuff about the new class. Innovator… What does that mean, exactly? Like, you just come up with ideas?”

  • (Angry, spiteful at his own student profile) “I have interests! I cook! We were just over this! They couldn’t even be bothered to find my likes and dislikes?!”

Morine Yasuko - Ultimate Caretaker

Role assigned to: Alxevalche

(Mohr-een Yah-soo-koh)

Gender: Female

A figure of kindness in the darkness of the killing game. After a difficult childhood, she chose to use her life to help those around her. She frequently helps the elderly, children in need, and anyone else who might be in need of her talents. Her constant high quality care for people in need led to her getting scouted by Hope's Peak Academy. She, of course, is taken into the killing game with the rest of her class, with the only way of escape being to take another student's life.

Morine's voice and personality exudes comfort. The sort of person you simply feel safe around. A voice for Morine needs to be able to capture this sense of ease and kindness, and should be able to tap into the levels of sympathy that she holds in her heart. Any pitch of voice is fine, but an easygoing and sweet tone is something that is needed. Also, her kindness is not the kind that feels forced, but instead simply comes naturally to her, which might impact how a performer tackles her as a role.

  • (Selfless, hopeful) “I was planning to prepare breakfast for everyone. I want everyone to eat breakfast together so we can do some icebreakers! I figure that if we trust each other and make friends, what are the odds we’d go and start killing each other?”

  • (Somber, truly caring and open) “Naka. There isn’t a single thing I’ve done where I felt forced. Everything I do is because I choose to. I CHOOSE to be kind, I CHOOSE to cook for all of you… and I’m choosing to be honest right now.”

(Koh-ee-kee Kee-chih-roo)

Gender: Male

Born and raised (in the earlier years of his life, at least) in Australia, Koike is considerably more self-sustaining than most of the students in his class. Having lived alone for the last several years of his life, he is independent and confident in his abilities. However, he is far from anti-social. Through his world traveling hunting trips, he's made friends on almost every continent. He's also quick to make friends with his classmates, even when presented with the idea of the killing game.

Koike could easily be confused for someone a few years older than he actually is, due to his immense stature, his plethora of scars, and, most pertinently, by his voice. Due to his upbringing, he has a clear Aussie accent. His voice is likely lower, with perhaps a slightly grizzled tone to it, due to his experience fighting and hunting in the unrelenting wilderness. However, he should be able to uplift any of his friends with his voice, and should be able to sound incredibly positive.

Role assigned to: Kaya

(Tah-keh-tah Eye-yah-may)

Gender: Female

Taketa's life is simple and happy. Lives with her incredibly supportive mom, with no sign of her father anywhere. This doesn't get her down, though, and she dedicates herself entirely to her work and wellbeing. She's worked in dozens of artistic mediums, across personal media, film, and anything else one might think of. She gets along with people without hesitation, and is well liked among her peers no matter surroundings. However, she gets distracted incredibly easy, and is less than perfect at social cues.

She's a very kind and fun-loving individual, though she's also somewhat absentminded at times. This should be reflected in her voice. A medium-high range could be good for her, though there's a lot of flexibility for what a voice actor could do. It is to be noted that there might be a few moments of her narrating similarly to Naka. Any voice auditioning for Taketa should have a sizable emotional and tonal range, so keep that in mind.

  • (Excited, loving about her family) “I have my mom and little sister! We’re all really artistic, just in different ways! My mom really likes dioramas and my sister is more into digital art and animating! They were very proud when I got scouted as an Ultimate!”

  • (Explaining how her mind works) “Agh… one more try! It’s like… I start thinking about something, and then… I get sidetracked in my own head, and then get sidetracked from that sidetrack and it just keeps going… like, my mind is just so crowded and active all the time that if I tried to be ‘normal’ I’d… probably screw something up. There’s so much to remember about how other people act, that there’s no way I could commit it all to memory without having to try and suppress every other thought that comes to mind, which, to be clear, DOESN’T WORK.”

(Goy-uh Kihn)

Perhaps one of the most famous names among the class of Ultimates trapped within the killing game. A renowned actor who has appeared in dozens of high budget movies, he's high class, pompous, and rather arrogant to those who he deems to be lower than himself. However, a simple act of rebuttal can reduce him to an incredibly pathetic state. Despite his high stylings and pompous attitude, he's rather helpless and cannot take care of himself at all.

In order to make himself seem fancier and cooler than he is, he speaks with a false accent (though it actually makes him seem a little lamer; also, said accent is optional). He should sound full of himself, but as though a single distasteful comment would send him spiraling (which happens on a few occasions). A voice actor auditioning for Goya should truly dig deep into the theatre kid aspect of his character, as it shows in nearly everything he does. Pitch and texture do not matter, as long as the spirit of the character shines through.

(Oh-kee-tah Mee-ay)

One of the most popular influencers on the planet, Okita is one of the most well-known Ultimates in the cast. She's most popular on YouTube, but she's had success across many platforms. She is, however, also known for a few bits of drama that have happened within and around her community. Despite this, she is still positive, upbeat, and always willing to improve. Part of her endlessly upbeat attitude comes from her habit of drinking energy drinks, but even without them she's a source of fun and positivity for everyone.

She's perhaps the most 'fun loving' person in the cast, in the sense that she tries to make everything she does fun in some way. This should be reflected in the performance given to her. Her voice should be excited, peppy, and energetic, but not to an overbearing level. A slightly higher pitch could be good, and talking quickly (but clearly) would also likely elevate a performance. However, there are many ways to go with her voice, and any aspiring performers should have fun with what they do.

The closest thing to a medical professional in the First Blood class. He keeps to himself for the most part, but is very quick to get to the point if anyone is injured or in need of assistance. No matter how dire the situation is, he almost always keeps a cool head about things and thinks rationally. Outside of the killing game, he spends much of his focus and his pay to help his family with anything they need. Naturally, being trapped in the killing game

He speaks infrequently, and when he does, it's very restrained and subdued. Whenever he speaks outside of more personal conversation, he's very quick to the point and somewhat blunt about it. Despite his bluntness, it's never out of malice, simply not wanting to sugarcoat things. Any voice actor wanting to capture Koda should also try to achieve the underlying stress beneath his voice. In terms of pitch and tone, a lower and darker voice could lead to a more in character voice, but there is still room to experiment.

One of the most knowledgeable people in the class, due to simply how many things she has reviewed in depth. More than just movies, foods, or books, she is dedicated to reviewing every single person, place, or thing on planet earth. She's somewhat blunt, and isn't afraid to criticize people out of both passion and instinct. She isn't a mean person, however, and is a loyal friend for those who get to know her.

She's a very subdued person, having forced herself to become so after being an incredibly rowdy child. She's somewhat monotone (not overly so), and is very concise with words. She shows real emotion only very rarely, so it should seem extremely different whenever she does. Her voice likely is a slightly lower pitch, and is very articulate in the way she speaks, without sounding pompous.

Even so, writing that review really helped me step out of my comfort zone and let me grow… that's all.”

  • (Focused, describing a game she is playing) “The game places a limit on how many cannons you can place. If you can predict where she hid them, the map becomes easy…”

(Cur-oh-dah Sad-ow)

Gender: Male (Transmasc)

Due to the nature of his talent, there's a considerable question as to why he's allowed into the Academy. Hope's Peak, of course, has bigger fish to fry, so the Ultimate Blackmailer is allowed into the next class of Hope's Peak. Most of his time at home was spend in the dark of his room, so he's not the most sociable person compared to his classmates. Fitting for his talent, this is compounded by the fact that he's also an asshole. Even from the moment they find themselves in the killing game, he tries stealing wallets, inciting fights, and getting himself in trouble. Despite this, however, he still does not want to participate in the game and tries to fight back.

His voice is clearly forced to sound a little more aggressive than it normally is. Secondly, he's a trans man who attempts to keep the fact that he's AFAB under wraps. While it is technically not required, I heavily suggest that transmasc VAs give him a shot. He should sound rude, a little bratty, and as though he is attempting to make himself seem bigger than he is. Any pitch is fine, but a little bit of rasp might add a lot to his voice.

Ishido Ihono - Ultimate Scientist

(Ee-shee-doh Eye-hoh-noh)

Gender: Female

A child prodigy, Ishido is by far the youngest member of her class, having been selected into Hope's Peak at only age 12. She comes from a family of geniuses, including a few Ultimates, revolutionary scientists, and more. Naturally, the pressure for her to succeed is immense, and it has made her somewhat defensively arrogant. Even despite her height, she talks down to those she views as lesser, and even ignores a few of her classmates that she feels do not belong.

Her voice is of particular import to her character, as it needs to be clear how much younger she is than her peers. She needs to sound bratty, yes, but also like a kid who has just been trapped in a game of life or death. However, despite this, she is still incredibly smart, and is among the brightest of the class, and she should sound sure of most of what she says. Striking that balance is what could make a voice for Ishido perfect.

  • (Explanatory, sort of darkly rambling) “I own an ant farm. Did you know that when ants die, they release oleic acid, which signals to other ants that there’s a body that needs to be removed? If you place a small sample of that acid on a living ant, it will believe it’s dead and stop moving. When no one comes to remove their body they either realize they’re alive and get back up, or continue to believe that they are dead and relocate themself to what is more or less an ant graveyard.”

  • (Scared, actually acting her age) “I-I want him to leave me alone! I- none of this matters! I just... don’t want to die! Alright!? I… want… to live…”

Nishi Katsumi - Ultimate Innovator
open

(Nee-shee Kat-soo-mee)

Gender: Male

An incredibly silly person (a trait that runs in his family), Nishi Katsumi is an Ultimate on the grounds that he has a lot of ideas. This doesn't mean, however, that he is capable of putting them into action. Despite his lack of engineering or practical knowledge, he still tries his hardest to make many of the things that he comes up with, both on his own and with the help of his friends. He's impulsive, and occasionally does things that either confuse or aggravate those around him- though he usually doesn't mean to.

He's a very fun person to talk to and be around, and frequently finds silliness in otherwise mundane things. Similarly, his voice should have an air of goofiness to it, perhaps as though he thinks certain things he says are funnier than they might otherwise seem. He's the sort of person where you would want to laugh along with him whenever something funny happens. Despite this focus on happiness, he, like everyone else in the story, should have a large range of emotion to tap into in more stressful and difficult scenes. If any pitch is preferred, perhaps a higher or lighter sound could add to the character.

Voice description:

Have I mentioned I really don't like bugs? Wait! That reminds me, I gotta show you my blueprints for a 'Bug-Evicerator Mark Seven', Ayumu!”

  • (Telling a story, fondly reminiscing) “It's not a super high achievement, but I remember when me and some of my friends worked together to build a treehouse! It was difficult, and a little grueling, but we had fun! Even though we didn't know what we were doing- and the fact that it was a random tree a couple miles from home, since we all lived downtown where there aren’t many trees.”

(Kuh-seye Hoh-moog-ee)

Gender: Female

Even compared to many of her smartest classmates, Kasai is a very clever and mature person. On one hand, because of this she is very calm, collected, and she thinks most things she does through.  On the other hand, she's somewhat socially limited by it, and can struggle to get especially close to many of her peers. When she does, however, she's a good friend and cares for them deeply. As a lawyer, she's fierce and unyielding in her fight for justice, which makes her strong company for a killing game such as the one she finds herself trapped in.

While she is calm and collected, she is not a monotone or bland person. She's rather normal in terms of her emotions, from the scale of monotone to especially expressive. She should sound like a relatively normal person compared to many of the eccentric characters in her class. Despite this, however, she can be very assertive at times, and can be impossible to sway from her goals. Being able to reach both of these, as well as being able to make her occasional extreme emotions noteworthy, is essential for any voice of Kasai. Pitch and tone, however, are less important, though a firmer tone in her voice could certainly work due to her career in law and argument.

Tano Hotaka - Ultimate Racer

(Tah-noh Hoh-tah-kah)

Gender: Male

A master of all levels of speed, Tano Hotaka goes above and beyond as the Ultimate Racer. More than just car racing, Tano is a professional in foot racing, jockeying, cycling, and has even tried his hand at speedrunning. He's incredibly successful in his field, and likes to see himself as a pretty well known celebrity- and is subsequently crushed whenever someone doesn't recognize him. Moving on from his ego, he's incredibly laid back, often to a fault, and doesn't think a lot of things all the way through before saying them. This can lead to difficulties for him to take things seriously when they are needed to, and often ends with him spewing out stupid theories and claims that only derail situations.

As a person, he's practically the embodiment of speed. He moves fast, speaks fast, and lives fast. Through most of his story, he's jokey, loud, and a little bit arrogant. He usually doesn't take things seriously, but when he does, there's a real sense of maturity that peaks through. Being able to get all of these aspects is something that can really elevate a performance for Tano. He's likely got a higher pitched voice, with a sense of vanity to his tone (of course, this is up to the voice actor on if they want to try something else). It's also suggested that voice actors who are good at louder recordings or shouting audition for Tano, since he does it a lot.

Gender: Non-Binary

Fittingly well-versed in all sorts of Engineering, Ayumu is one of the easiest to get along with people in the First Blood cast. A very chill person, they are the oldest of 6 siblings, which has likely contributed to their patience. They enjoy telling people all about their interests (infodumping), and are quick to help others - particularly Nishi - to fix any problems or achieve any goals that are feasible in the confines of the school.

Ayumu presents as very androgynous, and this is reflected in their voice. They're pretty chill and very intelligent most of the time, but occasionally certain things and implications fly over their head. Also, whenever they end up discussing anything to do with engineering or their personal hobbies and experiences, they can get into a moderately ranting tone of speech that's more excited than their voice might otherwise show. A medium pitch and a cool and collected tone could make for a very good Ayumu voice, provided the androgyny of the voice carries through.

Gender: Female

Compared to most people in her field, one would never assume Yuya to be a spirit medium. She's not especially outwardly spiritual, and is instead rather fierce and cool. Despite this, she is an expert at what she does, and firmly argues with any skeptics of her talent. As she grew up, she frequently visited her grandparents in America, and her beliefs and attitude were heavily inspired by things she picked up there. Because of this, she's quick to stand her ground and argue for what she thinks is right, and to most people seems like a slight delinquent (though compared to most of her class, she's relatively normal).

She's a very confident person, and is self assured in her values and abilities. This shows in her voice, which should sound unbothered most of the time, and firm whenever she's arguing her case in casual or more important conversations. Her voice is likely a little lower, and very unstrained in tone and emotion. However, anything, provided it sounds genuine, could be great for her voice.

  • (Arguing, in reference to a fake medium) “Ah--! Now just wait a minute, I’m way more legit than her! I can actually talk to dead people! Gimme a dead person’s name and I swear I’ll fetch their spirit for you with the right equipment and a small fee of six thousand yen!”

  • (Adding into discussion, casual) “Lots of only children around here… I’m one of them, so I guess I can’t talk. Mom and dad present and accounted for!”

  • (Slightly reluctant, unsure) “Uhm- potentially stupid question, but… why didn’t the killer get bloody? If they stabbed the victim all those times, then they should’ve gotten covered in blood, right…?”

Something of a deuteragonist to this story. An immensely sweet boy to both his friends and family, he has seemingly been cursed by the universe itself to have the worst luck known to man. Technology exploding in his hand, fires being sparked from a stray sneeze-- and that's without looking into anything about cooking. However, every bit of bad luck he has seems to bring about a silver lining. Repairs to a public area improving on it after an accidental arson, sizable donations to charities made in his wake, and even becoming an Ultimate... after being hit with the headmaster's car. Perhaps his luck is the reason he ended up in the killing game.

His voice should reflect his spirit. He's a cheery, sweet, and patient person who tries to get along with anyone he can. He's quick to make friends, and should have potential for strong chemistry with his fellow students. His voice might be a little higher in pitch, but any aspect of his voice is up to interpretation. Have fun with it!

  • (Explaining, cheerfully) “Usually, yeah. Basically, I was on my bicycle one day, on my way to the store. I was starting to go down hill when my breaks stopped working. And then it hit me!” (Morine: "What did?") “His car! I crashed right into it and got run over!”

  • (Making connections, joking) “I just realized, we’re kind of opposites… lucky and unlucky, right? And we’re the OPPOSITES of opposites! Since we’re both luck-based talents and Ishido doesn’t respect us!”

  • (Shaken, confused) "So what? We just scatter, after you told us to kill each other?"
